  • Converting a jeep grand cherokee from quadratrac (awd) to selectrac (2wd). Ended up shaving a 1/2 " off the slip yoke and it doesn't bind at full droop or compression.

    Hmm. Bought a spare Chrysler to drive while fixing the main Chrysler. Seems pretty risky. Might want to pick up a bicycle. ;-)

      Debbie has a wrangler too! We both have bikes so we are covered when everything is broken down.

    Did 249 rear driveshaft slip yoke work with the 242. They are different,the 249 is longer than the 242. I had to cut about 1.5 inches off my 249 yoke to prevent it from hitting the 242 transfer case. I'm still using the shortened 249 yoke. If you're gonna make this swap go get a 242 or 231 rear driveshaft slip yoke from a 4.0L with select track or a 96 to 00 TJ with a 231 transfer case. Luckily I had access to a chop saw. That yoke is such hard steel. It would take forever to cut with a hacksaw.

      Fun not so much. just something i had to do to make it more driveable or i would have left the old transfer case in. ill probably be pulling this one to rebuild it soon

    Sweet! So, did you pick up like 10MPG that way? lol! Seems like a good swap. Good explanation! Thanks for the video!

      honestly i pulled the front driveshaft right after i bought it so i have nothing to compare it to. Its a ton better to drive around in 2wd though

    Thank You for the great content. QUESTION. Can I flat tow behind my motorhome ( 4 wheels on ground) a 96 ZJ with the 249 transfer case? I tested by putting transfer case in neutral and transmission in park and zj moves freely forward and reverse as I push it. Ssme thing happens if transfer case is in neutral and transmission in neutral, I wonder what's safer. Please someone with experience on this reply. I have a trip coming soon and need to know.
    For my towing points I'm good. Jeep has a heavy duty winch mount with d rings and it's sandwiched over the unibody frame.. (1996 5.2 V8 with full time 4wd 249 transfer case, automatic transmission)

    That jeep looks like a 5.9L not the 5.2. the 5.9 limited was the only one that came with functioning hood louvers. May be a swapped hood tho, only way to know for sure is a vin search.
    Also, what vehicle year/model did you get this 242 off of? same spline for the transmission input?

    • @73DiamondReo
      @73DiamondReo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      5.2l according to the emissions tag. not sure what year jeep the transfer case came off of. transmission output was compatible with transfer case input. I believe there are only 3 possibilities for the 242

      Even has a 5.9 grille but that could also be swapped.

    So you really have to cut down the rear drive shaft? Why would it need more play when you flex its gonna pull out right

    • @73DiamondReo
      @73DiamondReo  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      yes i did. I moved the suspension through its full range of motion from full droop to fully compressed and it was tight when the driveshaft was in a straight line from transfer case to rear end.

    Does it matter what year 242

    • @73DiamondReo
      @73DiamondReo  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Main thing is that the input shaft is compatible. I believe there were 3 different options. I think the one I put in is a 1995 model year.

      I believe 96-98 will all bolt in, if you have 95 and older you have to change things
