Bad Girl is really one of Madonna’s best ballad. Not only cos of the lyrics but the raw emotion in her voice that just conveys the sadness, pain & imperfection of vocal performance. I can only imagine she was nervous in this performance given that at the time Madonna was receiving a HUGE backlash cos of her Erotica & Sex book. This is an iconic performance 🖤
I think after ‘Evita’ she has learned more technique in her singing, thus giving her more options and control. You can definitely tell when you listen to the Ray of Light album 💿 🎤
Sim, ela estudou muito para Evita! Gosto do timbre da voz dela. Madonna canta muito bem, quando quer!!!!! Outra habilidade admirável é saber cantar músicas de outros intérpretes adaptando à sua voz.
Yes, Madonna has three voices; the early 80's dance pop voice, the late 80's early 90's era which has a bit more depth and soul, then the post Evita voice which is more technical and expansive.
This is one of her best performances live! Her vocals are incredible! On the Celebration Tour I think she's singing live, because in the opening night she forgot the lyrics at the beginning
Love this song, its so gorgeous and meaningful. She looks stunning here. Her voice is so pleasant and makes you feel the lyrics. From what i heard she was live on Bad Girl at the Celebration Tour, thats why she lowered it to match her current voice.
I was hoping you'd watch this version of Bad Girl!! Her mic was definitely on, on this performance. A lot of the tracks from "Erotica" were recorded in one take and they did some minor overdubs. That's probably why the album has that gritty underground feel.
Madonna typically records her vocals in one take, as she wants to put emphasis on the emotion of the song rather than laying down a ‘perfect’ vocal. The small flaws are what make the song feel real, and relatable. Shes very smart, honestly, and brave because it opened her up to criticism about her voice, which is actually good, but some people expect more clean versions by artists who don’t feel vulnerable enough to allow for ‘mistakes’ in the recording like sharp or flat notes. Considering M is known to be a perfectionist, it’s actually rather interesting that she keeps vocals somewhat raw and real. Early on she must have been told or just naturally understood that it’s the imperfection of a vocal that makes the emotion come through.
This song is sensational and so cinematic and the video directed by David Fincher really matches it perfectly. I've always loved how vulnerable the recording is.
She had loads of singing coaching and lessons when she was working on Evita (1996), that's why her technique improved so much This performance is from the beginning of the 90s. Even in the recordings themselves, you feel the difference pre Evita and post Evita. Listen to Ray of light and Erotica, for example. You can see the bits in ROL being much more intentional and precise. You are absolutely correct about her figuring out her voice in the beginning of her career. I think Erotica and also the Immaculate collection is when she's usually lower on her tone, and it makes sense, since she was singing very high on the early albums. I love this woman.
I love that’s she’s singing these beautiful ballads form her amazing album EROTICA. Rain is on the celebration tour also which is my favourite ballad by her . She’s has 74 shows to do from now up until may next year if she’s singing along to a pre recorded version of her own voice that’s not surprise I think a lot of performers do this . Love love love MADONNA 💖
Madonna learned a lot during Evita, that's why Ray Of Light has an amazing vocal quality, but she still didn't have total control of the Evita voice live. I think it's from The Drowned World Tour (2001) onwards that she really found her voice.
The Reinvention Tour features her best live vocals! She was still taking vocals lessons and she was out to prove she was still relevant after the poor showing of American Life album.
No one can sing a ballad like Madonna. She emotes unlike any other artist. Whitney and Mariah can belt, but Madonna sells the vulnerability. Live To Tell, Promise To Try, Rain, Bad Girl, Joan of Arc, Masterpiece.....brilliant!
To me, her Bad Girl SNL performance is easily Top 3 performances of her career, vocally. I love that Bad Girl is on the tour and so many people are rediscovering it or finally listening to it for the first time. Gold 👌
You are such a lovely person! It's a pleasure to enjoy your expertise and opinions, especially when delivered with warmth and compassion. The rest of internet should learn from you on how to use our voices online.
She took singing lessons when she was filming Evita which is why she came in so strong on the Ray of Light album, recorded immediately after. Bad Girl was before, when she still often struggled with control and tone. She was quite nasally and wasn’t as dexterous with moving between registers. She might be nervous because this song is from Erotica, (and it was her first single not to reach the top 30 on the Hot 100) an album that came with a lot of backlash that she surprisingly actually struggled to manage. A lot of people were over her at this point in her career. Hence her next, less in your face, album Bedtime Stories, which also wasn’t as massively successful as her previous works. Next was Something To Remember, a compilation of ballads, which was a conscious effort to soften her image.
I love this song, thank you for analysing it! Madonna definitely improved her singing skills in the late 90s specially after Evita era. She has never been a technical singer, but has always released great songs! Each album is completely different from one another it's insane how creative she is
Her vocal performance was the best in 1993, at least when we look at the times before she took singing lessons for Evita. There are several performances from her Girlie Show that have amazing vocals: Rain, Express Yourself or La Isla Bonita among others.
Just a note. I think SOME of the Celebration Tour is completely live, as I’ve seen her drop her mic and there is NOTHING there. Nice to see you again. x
She looks amazing here and i think it’s such a hard song to sing as the verse and chorus are sung differently ..and it seems quite a wordy song for some reason
I agree it’s challenging to sing which is why she had t performed it on tour before now. The range is huge… she’s challenging herself in the high notes and the low notes. This is definitely near the max of her range, which is impressive.
Congratulations to Madonna, the best-selling female recording artist on the Guinness World Records, as the ultimate authority on record-breaking achievements has finally aknowledged that she had sold over 400 million records during her career, albums and singles, including digital
Awww this is so cool! She definitely had a VERY different voice pre Evita, but it’s really nice for it to be analysed like this as she always got so much flack for not being able to sing around this time, when she totally could! I think most of the Erotica album was done in minimal takes and most of the vocals were intended to sound cheap as they wanted it to have like a phone sex feel, so the original Bad Girl would have intentionally left the mistakes in to make it sound raw! It’s my fave album of hers and I’m glad she’s revisiting so much of it and lovely videos like this are being made! 🙃
lol cheap? hear the vocal effects - reverbs - or anything you may call, Bad Girl is the clearest and crispiest song in that album, they have us listen to the words and emotions clearly, the second to me is Rain - though involving more reverbs - more flowy and dreamy like. while the other - like you said - cheap. I would say, not subtle. in Fever, it is actually clear but she sings softly, Deeper & Deeper - she sings normally but the effect is added with loud background vocals by Niki&Donna - less clear than Bad Girl. well above all, looking at all of her music catalogue, what accross my mind is : RICH🎉 for the easiest way to think : compare Erotica album with I’m Breathless😂 OR with Like a Prayer. I cant imagine the same production earlier applied to Erotica. that wont work.😮 EROTICA is the best in its own way, that’s why that album is underrated. especially most of the songs are damn long❤ thankyou for sharing with me❤
I loved this performance since the very first time I watched in January 1993. She looks beautiful in her Agnetha Fältskog's look. I missed it so much in The Girlie Show. Your reactions are always great. Greetings from Buenos Aires.
I am so glad you are revisiting this classic and various versions. Between Erotica album/SNL and the Celebration Tour, she had professional vocal training for Evita. It completely changed her voice (for the better, in my opinion).
Having known the album version of this song for 30 years (!) it’s fantastic to hear your analysis of Madonna’s performance. I’ve never heard the SNL performance. It’s great to hear her truly live.
I've been taking sining classes for two years now, and I have the same characteristic...I overthink because I'm always trying to be perfect and it does create a lot of tension... And seen Madonna having the same issues (8 years after her 1º album) and relaxing during the song makes me think that it's not easy to just relax.
I LOVE this version so much ❤❤❤ & she looks absolutely gorgeous . PS forgot to say the original video with Christopher Walken is an absolute work of art & is like a mini movie . Her beautiful eyes completely draw u in ❤️
I agree with your points on M's live performance of Bad Girl! In case it hasn't been mentioned, I thought I'd give a bit of back story on the original album recording of the song. As with many of the songs from the Erotica album, the lead vocal tracks that ended up on the album were from early demos recorded in the apartment of her collaborators Shep Pettibone and Tony Shimkin as the tracks were being written. With Bad Girl, in the original demo version she repeats the first verse after the first chorus, as she had yet to finish the lyrics. It was only when they moved to a proper recording studio that Madonna came up with the lyrics for the second verse. According to Shep, they tried re-recording the track in the studio with the added lyrics included but they preferred the sound of the demo vocals, so they ended up bringing the microphone they had used to record the demo into the studio to record the second verse and left the rest of the vocals intact from the earlier demo.
Her voice brings such emotion to songs like this, that is what she is very good at and isn’t given enough credit for. Take a bow and Power of goodbye are also good examples of this ❤
She is not just singing, its a show. There is a band with blind people who can play in the dark and has her in the end ripping the picture of joey in the end... Beautiful.
I love Madonna. I think she did this song beautifully. That is why she is the top-selling female artist of all time. I don't think we have to analyze her vocals. She has nothing to prove to her true fans. She is magical and always will be. Icon. Living legend.
I love it sooooo much to follow you explaining Madonna performances. ❤ You know, see and hear so many details and explain it with so much respect and joy - it´s a pleasure for me! Thank you for that!! Forever Madonnas fan. 😅❤
Thank u Georgina for listening to the only other time M sang this live. One of her best live vocals I think. I would love for you to react to Mother and Father from Reinvention Tour. It's an incredible live performance.
This was a wonderful breakdown and interesting opinions… thank you for picking this should-be-more-known song. I’ve always loved it. Hope you ultimately like it too… you never said
Madonna was sick w/the flu when she performed Bad Girl @ SNL. My friend was dating her at the time & told me she had 101 fever😳 Madonna has been a warrior since day 1. Happy she's performing the song in her new tour❤ Can't wait to see it💯👑
Finally such a good song got some recognition. Also the official video of the song is one of the best videos of Madonna. She has such a powerful catalogue.
I would be very interested to hear your opinion of "Live to Tell" from the Confessions tour DVD. I think she was singing her a** off - I'm sure it's entirely live - you can see every syllable coming from her jaw all the way down her neck. It gave me goosebumps. Then I saw her live on the next tour. Suffice it to say my Madonna goosebumps were gone - probably about the 4th time she forgot the words, mid-song. I understand lip syncing as a reality. But the artists emo state counts LOTS! Would love to hear your take on that.
Her voice is actually in great shape… its lower which is completely normal for women as they get older, but she still has good control of it. The current tour is proving she’s still got it. Where she is struggling is her lack of movement, but considering she’s 65 and nearly died earlier this year, no one can fault her for that.
Thank your for this ! I remember watching this when it was live on TV. I was completely enraptured by the entire performance. The live band, the lighting, her hair, outfit and live vocals were all perfection to me. I love how the performance has this bluesy lounge singer vibe.
She was naturally a lower-set soprano, so the higher parts always came easier as you can hear in this performance. Now she is more of a mezzo due to age with much better lows.
Love this Madonna content as a longtime fan of both Queens ..you and Madonna . I am just back from the Antwerp gigs 2 in a row and can confirm that she was singing live apart from things like justify and erotica which are just spoken mostly. Even though there is loads of songs a lot are shortened verses etc ! But her vocals , as Stuart Price had said in Billboard , are way more central and in fine form!
You nailed it with "perfection is boring"... Songs like these are not about perfection. When she recorded Bad Girl, Madonna decided to use the mic that is used for instruments (instead of the one customised for her voice) in order to have her voice and the emotions behind it to be as raw and "naked" as possible... It almost sounds live on the Erotica album. Anyway, gonna be seeing the show in two weeks and will be happy to report how prerecorded/live it's gonna be. Been her fan since 84, this is gonna be my 7th tour and 12th show, but nevertheless have never lied to myself about what was live, what was heavily supported by prerecorded vocals and what was flat out lip-synced. Still, when you get what she brings forth singing live in terms of emotion - whether it's sadness or love or joy - no one comes close. And let's not forget the dancing... Also, glad you noticed how relaxed she was during the final third of the song! Madonna's perfectionism is of biblical proportions and often you will notice a moment in her live performances when she gets through the most difficult part and then - if she's happy with herself - she lets it all out and simply enjoys it. Thank you fort all your educational, inspiring and fun videos!
Over the years, people made fun of her vocal abilities. That's unfair. Madonna's voice is so distinctive, and it can't be mistaken for anyone else's. I love the timbre and colors of her voice.
This is a Madonna vocal live performance at her best!!! Not perfect, but very gripping. This era she improved her voice and still put emotions in it. Something she lost later on and now with the Celebration tour she picked it up again. I'm thrilled!!!
if I look for perfections, I wont be a Madonna’s fan 😂 I am here for her imperfections❤ I love her and I cherish her for BEING AROUND UNTIL THIS DAY🎉 Thanks Madonna, you whole catalogue of music is the soundtrack of my life🎉
That was definitely one of Madonna's best live performances, and a proof she can do great vocally in proper conditions and with a suitable song. I genuinely think Madonna has a very unique and interesting voice, and if she were just a vocal performer she'd probably do great just as well with the right choice of songs and vocal coaching. Now, singing live on tour can be tricky and challenging, as not only does she have to move (and dance!) while singing, but also some of her songs aren't just easy to perform live keeping the "studio" sound and quality. I'd say most of the songs she can do alright, some of them she does great (as long as she remains reasonably still and focused), and then there are certain songs she shouldn't/can't really perform live, and that's where certain level of lipsyncing comes into play. That's just how things are. And for sure, Madonna isn't just the only one who does it, but probably the most debated and criticised along her all career.
I watched your review of her Celebration Tour rendition...I watched other fan-made videos on TH-cam from various nights and she absolutely is singing live - 100% - at least from the clips I saw. Anyways...thanks for revisiting.
Madonna didn't start taking singing lessons until she prepared to record Evita, during which she discovered parts of her voice she didn't know she had. The recording of Bad Girl on the album is most likely her demo vocal, one of the first takes or the very first take of the song. The album vocals on Erotica album are rough, less produced and often the demo vocals because they wanted a gritty unpolished feel for that particular album.
Who told you that she was not taking vocal lessons before Evita? She was and still a businesswoman up to date so before her career she spoke to some record producers and even to vocal trainers. She knows how to play the game since she is not actually a singer but more of a performance artist
She’s never been a Whitney or a Mariah or a vocalist, but that low nasally sound, her emotion she always projects, the mmmmmmhmmm’s she adds what I’ve always loved.

Madonna is wonderful. there is so much emotion in her voice, and perfection is boring, it doesn't have to be perfect for tears of emotion to flow.
Bad Girl is a very unique song and difficult to sing and I love the emotion in it. One of my favorites 😍
Madonna was sick w/the flu when she performed Bad Girl @ SNL. My friend was dating her at the time & told me she had 101 fever😳 Madonna has been a warrior since day 1.
Happy she's performing the song in her new tour❤ Can't wait to see it💯👑
I remember hearing she had a cold or flu during this time as well!
Finally such a good song got some recognition. Also the official video of the song is one of the best videos of Madonna. She has such a powerful catalogue.
It's such a beautiful performance. My favorite Madonna era. Erotica was a real work of art.
Wow I asked for this. Thank you!
I love bad girl and all of its versions ❤️🔥
Oh my god this madonna is surreal, i love her!!!!
It makes me sad how her voice is no longer any good but i guess shes still iconic
Her voice is actually in great shape… its lower which is completely normal for women as they get older, but she still has good control of it. The current tour is proving she’s still got it. Where she is struggling is her lack of movement, but considering she’s 65 and nearly died earlier this year, no one can fault her for that.
She sounds much better on her current tour than i expected.
Beautiful.
We dont see her dancing but...we completely see her voice and emotions.
Lovely ❤
Love this performance!!🙌🏽🔥
Thank your for this ! I remember watching this when it was live on TV. I was completely enraptured by the entire performance. The live band, the lighting, her hair, outfit and live vocals were all perfection to me. I love how the performance has this bluesy lounge singer vibe.
Had you ever heard this before cause I hadn't till the tour. Might be my new favourite Madonna track❤
She was naturally a lower-set soprano, so the higher parts always came easier as you can hear in this performance. Now she is more of a mezzo due to age with much better lows.
On the recording of Like a Virgin and Angel her voice goes high and low as well. I've noticed that the way she really sings is lower when she's live
My favourite ballad is This used to Be My Playground and Live to Tell 🌟
💯
Perfect and SHE proved she can sing in live … the Best❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
An emotional performance ❤
Thank you for your reaction 😊
We love you Georgina ❤❤❤
We love you Madonna😍❤️
Love this Madonna content as a longtime fan of both Queens ..you and Madonna . I am just back from the Antwerp gigs 2 in a row and can confirm that she was singing live apart from things like justify and erotica which are just spoken mostly. Even though there is loads of songs a lot are shortened verses etc ! But her vocals , as Stuart Price had said in Billboard , are way more central and in fine form!
Bad Girl has always been a fave of mine.
She has such emotion in her voice. That is something that people can actually feel, not just hear.
I love this song and performance.💙🙏
Thank you fort all your educational, inspiring and fun videos!
hell yeah I love when you do madonna
I think this is a great performance. Great live vocal with live imperfections and a great band (yes, great funky bassist!).
Over the years, people made fun of her vocal abilities. That's unfair. Madonna's voice is so distinctive, and it can't be mistaken for anyone else's. I love the timbre and colors of her voice.
Oh God, how I enjoyed this video. Thank you
Madonna its incredible
This is a Madonna vocal live performance at her best!!! Not perfect, but very gripping. This era she improved her voice and still put emotions in it. Something she lost later on and now with the Celebration tour she picked it up again. I'm thrilled!!!
Love Madonna! ❤❤
I love her lower register it’s so dark and husky! Her vibrato is nice as well! She also covers I Will Survive in her tour.
That live music arrangement was just awesome!
Great reaction video! Love this song
if I look for perfections, I wont be a Madonna’s fan 😂 I am here for her imperfections❤ I love her and I cherish her for BEING AROUND UNTIL THIS DAY🎉 Thanks Madonna, you whole catalogue of music is the soundtrack of my life🎉
Tell that to the Madge stans that think she's perfect in every way lol. It's nice to see some flaws, it humanizes her.
Thanks for continuing this review from the last one. Great track that deserves more attention.
She is very relaxed when she sings Fever after Bad Girl. You should react to that one too. I love your videos
