@Mercedes Benz - Thank you for your question. In Germany, displacement is always measured by 100 cc, which means as soon as you are over 6200 it counts as 6300; therefore, it is a 6.3 liter engine. The C 63 AMG has the AMG 6.3 liter V8 engine internally named the M156, while the SLS AMG has the AMG 6.3 liter V8 SLS engine internally named the M159.
Wish this was still in production. Engines like this has made AMG what it is, but electrically assisted engines and reducing cylinders and displacement will soon remove everything about what made AMG special.
vioscios Well that happens when you drag an engieer from his cave to present in a foreign language, other companies maketing people just dont do that ;)
I had the previous generation 6.2L and never got more than 300kms (200miles) per $105 of 94 octane. Traded in for 2012 E63 with this 5.5TT motor, and now averaging 550kms (345miles) per $105 of 94 octane. This is what they mean by thinking of the environment. This is one of the greatest, most reliable engines ever built. Hands down. Especially considering with a $1500 tune, you are at 700 ft/lbs of torque. The 4.4L BMW TT is NOT a better motor. Makes less power, is less efficient, less potential, and has far more problems.
Generally it's stupid to have this eco "start-stop engine" in 5,5 V8 AMG engine. It's only purpose is to meet the EURO emission restrictions on paper. But no one normall use this mode. It's even dangerous when you need fast accelerate from stand still position to enter the traffic and the engine lags.

@Kyokkouha - Thank you for your question. We appreciate your enthusiasm for the GL series. Due to space issues, the AMG 6.0 Liter V12 Biturbo engine does not fit in this vehicle.
AMG Crossfire I disagree. The new 5.5 has no cons. It has way more power than the 6.2. The old 6.2 also had a class action lawsuit for oiling problems that a ton of cars had. The 5.5 is much more reliable and has much more power hands down.
I find it rather astonishing that the technical content in this very appealing video is limited to the demonstration of: 1)direct injection, 2)turbocharger/intercooler, and 3)auto-start; the former two are 'Schnee von gestern' in the automotive industry thus the R&D that the components of this engine must have gone through is razor sharp.

I would like to know how Mercedes plans to get around the cold start effect with there auto shutoff engines when they come to a stop, and start back up when your press the accelerator. Electric secondary oil pump?
i have an 2013 ml350 with stop and start. The stop and start feature only works under certain conditions. Below a certain set temperature, The computer tells it turn it off. This feature is not always on. I hope this helps
OdinAF Well you think about it, it does not need to to have the oil pump flowing. Its just like starting an ordinary car at any time esp in this case its all the time. When the engine uses this feature it completely shuts off the engine. No moving parts, no lubrications.
Jayme Barrington Correct, but every time you start a car, there is no oil flowing, so for a brief amount of time the metal has no lubrication cases the metal parts to rub on one another without protection until the oil gets to it. So for a brief amount of time every time you start your car there is a little bit of wear on the metal parts. This system if not supported by a secondary pump that runs while it's off will cause this wear effect to happen every time you start and stop the engine. Effectively shortening the life of the engine.
You sir know your engineering, as for me not really. But we are talking about Mercedes Benz here. They are well known for reliable/quality engines. I doubt they would allow their system to shortening their engines. Most likely they do have a secondary oil pump running when engine is off but i really dont know. Sorry if i have not answered your question.
Amazing - if you look back in history, english was derived from middle-english which came from lower-german (among other influences). But to hear a native German speaker attempt english is quite funny.
the engine has additional cam sensors that remember the exact last cylinder fired and the angle where the piston is. So the starter doesn't really do much except a nudge. As for oil pressure. It is the same as starting up a car regularly, except this time, oil is everywehre and everything is lubed, therefore it would NOT wear out the engine. It's not a dry start.
No offense at all, but if you guys elaborated explanations about the engine in german with english subtitle, it would have been a little more... MERCEDES !

Just looking at the valve timing... Hear me if like.. Just wondering if a rocker valve might work? The timing cam shaft (displaced from used to be (above valve and spring) to be above rocker valve) hits down on 2 to 1 ratio rocker (other end has spring as strong to keep valve tight closed) thus saving huge amounts of energy maybe... Amg stands for The letters "AMG" stand for Aufrecht, Melcher and Großaspach (Aufrecht's birth town). In 1976 most of AMG moved to Affalterbach, with the racing-engine development remaining at the old location in Burgstall. At this time Erhard Melcher ceased to be a partner, but continued to be an employee at the Burgstall location. Why does narrator miss informing us ???? And that stop start button f the starter motor
Even though the F10 M5 4.4l V8TT outputs more power, I feel like reliability wise it won't hold up too well overtime. Like @Gondon, generating 560PS from 4.4l sounds difficult unless BMW is pushing the engine to the limit. The 525PS from the AMG 5.5l V8TT is lightly pushed and could be upped to 560PS with confidence from AMG Performance Pack. It also sounds better than the M5, which needs artificial sounds in the interior to make the car sound like a V8.
Direct injection causes problems with inlet manifold carbonizing. What you gain in fuel consumption you lose in additional maintenance . (decarbonizing). Net gain = nil.
Having eliminated the injectors above the intake valves, how do you keep carbon & oil deposits from building up on the valve & slowing down the charge air flow? The one drawback of direct injection"
Do you think the following engine would be smother with faster acceleration? V8 engine >Bore 4 x 3" stroke >60 degrees V >Cylinder firing every 45 degrees of crank
I under stand you German guys are proud of your engines and you should be but I personally think its over designed and expensive to work on and repair and complicated me myself I would make engine efficient as possible without the complication that would help with people not wanting one for fear of the cost of repairs its a great engine but to complex
money is always an issue i personaly have two friends with amg's and they both have suspencion problems because of the high cost of repairs!! so no lets keep it real money is always a factor!!
+Behzad Amjadi thats exactly my point this guy has 8 diferent vehicles and the money to repair but people still dont want to spend on repairs, but yes i agree with u dont buy a car you cant comfertably afford...
I can see why he said that. it wears the engine out and wears the starter out quicker especially in city traffic. usually start up where no oil pressure is being applied, its kind of bad on the engine cuz you can take off from a dead stop and not everything is getting oil yet. but that's just my guess.
not really, the rich don't want a crappy turbocharged engines, they want a NA engines. Fuck I hate to know that when I will have money to buy a car all I will find is turbocharged engines because of nature extremists :(
ijustinw the Naturists are NOT intent on forcing you to have a turbocharged auto mobile, they are intent on forcing you to do without an automobile. You will be lucky to ride the bus instead of walking or using a bicycle IF they have their way.
We'll ALL be on hybrids/elec vehicles soon, and the sooner the better as far as I'm concerned. An elec motor is superb for vehicles, with 95%+ efficiencies, so work on great innovative ways to GENERATE clean power, not coal etc, and we'll have great transport systems. Though while they ALLOW Ships to use bunker fuels, the dirtiest fuels of world, cars being clean will do ZERO. 1 ship outputs as much pollution as 15-20 MILLION Cars, and they have orders for 2,500 SHIPS of that size to build. They can EASILY clean the output pollution using similar techniques to factories onshore, but they are VERY Rich corps and owners of countries so why should they, unless they are MADE TO!
amazing machine and some nice animation. very cool thank you for sharing. out of curiosity, is the technology of direct injection and start being adapted to smaller displacement?

Then there is the latest Apple Iphone, dont worry, Apple knows what they are doing. It only seems like it is bending.
NO TURBO LAG?
Bi-turbo..............................
Variable Turbo vanes
peruface nope, not when you start with a 5.5L engine :D
A superb video, very informative. Glad to see AMG staying on top of technology.
Amg the best car on the planet because I have one 😀
Well I am very proud about my 5.5l Bi-turbo CL63 AMG from 2013 :-)
these guys talk like robots.. lol
Germans are also robots
@fre d but they talk rly bad... i would say i have a way better pronunciation then these people and im german too and 17 years old
Try speaking german
fre d are you listening about the engine or his accent?
Man, it's professional, and accurate
Even though the F10 M5 4.4l V8TT outputs more power, I feel like reliability wise it won't hold up too well overtime. Like @Gondon, generating 560PS from 4.4l sounds difficult unless BMW is pushing the engine to the limit. The 525PS from the AMG 5.5l V8TT is lightly pushed and could be upped to 560PS with confidence from AMG Performance Pack. It also sounds better than the M5, which needs artificial sounds in the interior to make the car sound like a V8.
AMG engines are known as hand built.
Are those engineers actual human?
Incredible engineering. And this was 12 years ago, incredible. Imagine what they are doing in their labs nowaday wow (hope it isn't electric smh)!
German Engineering 🇩🇪💪
Light weight concepts is really important for environment and time management
The narrator is a Mercedes car lol
We love every cars of Germany!! greethings from Turkey!!
Looks like I'm no longer into woman
@JosLewisWood Carpenter good choice
Direct injection causes problems with inlet manifold carbonizing. What you gain in fuel consumption you lose in additional maintenance . (decarbonizing). Net gain = nil.
Finally someone who knows what he's saying
Reäkts as fascht as leightning ...

Wouldn’t that stop and starter feature wear out your engine as well as your starter to start the engine?
Kolby Brian2412 that’s the thing, the money you’re saving fuel-wise you’ll end up spending on a new starter
Apple Pro your engine won’t last as long because you’re putting more wear when you keep starting it
Kolby Brian2412 good point
I am german and not every german is talking english like him😂😂😂😂😂

One more reason why i love mercedes
damn everyone's so serious when they talk
This guy could not be less excited about the engine
German ingenuity
Having eliminated the injectors above the intake valves, how do you keep carbon & oil deposits from building up on the valve & slowing down the charge air flow? The one drawback of direct injection"
Thanks for your interest, Roy. Please find further official information about this engine here: amg4.me/3YyAZqst .
Do you think the following engine would be smother with faster acceleration?
V8 engine
>Bore 4 x 3" stroke
>60 degrees V
>Cylinder firing every 45 degrees of crank
I under stand you German guys are proud of your engines and you should be but I personally think its over designed and expensive to work on and repair and complicated me myself I would make engine efficient as possible without the complication that would help with people not wanting one for fear of the cost of repairs its a great engine but to complex
People who are scared about having to pay for repairs don't buy AMG's ffs.
that's a long sentence. I bet you can write a whole book in one sentence.
money is always an issue i personaly have two friends with amg's and they both have suspencion problems because of the high cost of repairs!! so no lets keep it real money is always a factor!!
+Behzad Amjadi thats exactly my point this guy has 8 diferent vehicles and the money to repair but people still dont want to spend on repairs, but yes i agree with u dont buy a car you cant comfertably afford...
They never said about reliability, but it is Mercedes
5.5Liter V8 Bi-Turbo was built
Keine Schwäche zeigen
All the new stuff is so... sad. These older engines are just phenomenal. Fossil fuels forever!
i bet the dude doesnt even know what hes saying, hes reading from somewhere im sure lol
That's really brilliant to learn the technology & of course the all tech support people!
Now we get 2.0l engines on AMG's 🤮😢😢
Right?
I can see why he said that. it wears the engine out and wears the starter out quicker especially in city traffic. usually start up where no oil pressure is being applied, its kind of bad on the engine cuz you can take off from a dead stop and not everything is getting oil yet. but that's just my guess.
Put this bad guy up with the full carbon body, a total monster.
OK for the rich and famous and those who don't give a shit about the environment.
not really, the rich don't want a crappy turbocharged engines, they want a NA engines.
They can EASILY clean the output pollution using similar techniques to factories onshore, but they are VERY Rich corps and owners of countries so why should they, unless they are MADE TO!
amazing machine and some nice animation. very cool thank you for sharing. out of curiosity, is the technology of direct injection and start being adapted to smaller displacement?
lmao @ " the Bee-turbo engine"
That start/stop techonology is also using in Honda Motobike.
hello, I live in Brazil, and I wonder if these chains on bikes connected to the crankshaft, making the adjustment thereof. and after how long do exchanges.
They are just timing chains and basically last forever; I've owned a nissan with a timing chain and drove it until 400+k no issues
Excellent video of turbo 👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
