    This is by far the best video on the M177 & M178 engine variant from Mercedes AMG.…Ls1 & Ls2…..Hmmmm sounds like a Chevy engine. Brilliant video.

    Misfire and leaning running codes (rough running) are usually fixed by a vin specific ME software update. The engines make a lot of power but for emissions they run really lean, and sometimes it triggers the misfire counter although technically its not misfiring.

    Note @4:15 : The power in the M177 LS2 is actually rated up to 630 hp and 660 lb-ft in the AMG GT 63 S but no mechanical changes vs. the E63 S are listed. Also, the text should say 850Nm on screen (or 895Nm for the GT 63).

    I watched this video to see if there were any problems with the hot-v setup over time (like with BMW's N63). I didn't think having the turbos in that position was good for seals and gaskets. So far MB looks to have got it right in terms of reliability.

      The 6.7 Powerstroke diesel in the Ford Superduty trucks is a hot V setup. The early years 2011-2014 had turbo issues but overall it seems to be a solid engine.

    Great video, mate! Well done!
    I'm driving the M177 LS2 in an E63s and while it is a great engine with mind blowing performance, I'm still missing the pure and clear V8 rumble + brutal sounds coming out of the sport exhaust in the M157 engines - as we all know - there's "no replacement for displacement".
    I can also confirm the rough idling on the M177. Not sure what to do besides replacing the spark plugs and ignition coils, but I can live with it. :)
    So sad that these amazing engines will become history soon...

    • @thatmatty231guy
      @thatmatty231guy 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Agreed! The M157 is a bit closer to original - but then if you hop in the old 113k or 156 thats OLD school AMG v8 haha :) The M177 & M157 are still great :)

    • @DZGunner
      @DZGunner 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      my c63 s with an armytrix exhaust really has that deep v8 sound to it. Although the m157 sounds good, i really don't think these engines are missing out in the sound department at all. You have to consider that the turbos act as mufflers in a way. so stacking cats, and actual mufflers will deaden the sound. Open it up a bit and I promise you it sounds just as great.

    Lots of trouble coming.
    Like the M278 preceding it.
    1. Plastics with flimsy connectors buried in very hot places.
    2. DI without PI will carbon up intake valves quickly. Cylinder deactivation and cam cover adhesive aging are upcoming problems.
    3. All are buried under layers of stuff which breaks when you disassemble it.
    4. MB shop rates and book times are punitive.
    In short. Consider avoiding German altogether if you have time and money constraints.

    Thinking about upgrading from my 2015 Cls 63 to a 2016/2017 AMG GT/S. Is the M178 More or less reliable than an M157 if both are stock and regularly maintained? I’m a little bit unsure of what to do as the AMG GT is a pretty car but I do really enjoy the M157 engine and sharp looks of my Cls. Not to mention that the car has been very reliable. do you think I’ll miss the M157 in terms of thrill and reliability by moving on into the GT ?
