Interesting fact: You can't start an F1 car cold or you'll cause blowby through wear when the engine warms up. The reason is because the engines are built to tolerances so strict that the engine block's expansion and contraction actually affects the amount of pressure exerted on the pistons and rings. When the block is cold, it contracts slightly and exerts more pressure on the pistons, which means there's more friction and this wears the piston rings down faster. Start the car too many times from cold and you'll wear the pistons down to the point that when the engine warms up to operating temperature, the piston rings fit looser, therefore having a bad seal which will cause blow-by, where the fuel and air mix will escape around the piston rings into the crank case. If you let it get bad enough, your F1 engine will start to burn oil and lose compression... Potentially causing a misfire just like in a standard engine... only this one would be WAY more expensive to fix!
a- Babunji If you can find documentaries and interviews with engineers from the F1 on TH-cam and Discovery Turbo, you'll find info like the fact I posted above :D
Ronald Mattos The engineers pump hot oil through the engine to get it up to operating temperature before trying to crank it over. This expands the engine and alters the tolerances so that they're within a range the engineers consider safe to attempt a crank.
Ok, first they were V10 engines, then V8 and now they're V6. I wonder how much longer it'll take until they run on single cylinger engines! EDIT: Coming back 5 years later I didn't expect to have sparked a thread this size, let alone over 400 likes. Thanks, I guess o_O

ever wondered where all the technology comes from in your car? This is where its developed, its done for a reason. With the laws for our vehicles becoming more strict with fuel so must the race cars. I think its awesome
I'm very much in favor of the changes that were made to this season's cars:) Granted, the old cars sounded... louder, but this isn't all about sound. F1 is supposed to be the space tech engineering of motoring, and that is always about efficiency. Less fuel per lap, less engines per season, less everything, while still maintaining amazing power and speed. I'm looking forward to having reasonably priced production cars with KERS and better fuel economy. And a biiig kudos to the animators who did this film. Amazing work.
The atmo V8s were slower than the V10s when they first appeared. The atmo V10s were slower than the V6 turbos when they first appeared. In fact F1 have been slowing cars down to make them safer and less costly since the late 1950s. Nothing new here and as always the engineers keep finding ways to go faster. That is the true joy of F1 Bring on the new season.
do people not remember that from 1983 to 1988 turbo V6 engines were used? And back then they were only up to 1.5 litres, and despite the turbocharger boosting the power over 1000 horsepower it had HUGE lag and mainly operated in the high RPM range? Unlike today's F1 engines which displace up to 1.6 litres and produce 600hp, and a little over 900hp including the turbo and hybrid systems? And these hybrid systems also remove the turbo lag to allow it to operate in the entire RPM range? These new cars are faster than the 80's ones if they had better tyres, more downforce, could rev higher and overall be easier to drive allowing the drivers to push harder. But whilst we hope for that in 2017, appreciate the engineering marvel that this technology is and enjoy the turbo whine that the V12's, V10's and V8's lacked.
I agree the sound of the f1 isnt as ideal as it once was, but hating on next gen f1 cars purely based on sound alone is stupid! The amount of new technology and innovation that has gone into these cars is amazing, and should be acknowledged. Car sound has no impact on laptimes what so ever. Aidan D What computers are you talking about? Traction Control, Launch Control, Active Suspension and ABS have all been banned along with some other driver aids. Also, hate to say it, but flappy paddle gear box is faster and more reliable than a manual.
The PU regulations that costed Renault engine performance and reliability in Formula 1 And that's why Renault was a powerhouse during V10 and V8 NA days in Formula 1!
i do agree with the environtmentalist that we have to make even motorsport more efficient, but tbh the v10 sounds waaaaaay better. but i think there's no way around it, we have to become an energy efficient species. outstanding video editing btw.
The main reason the FIA did this was to attract more investors, big brands by making it more eco friendly which is quite poisonous for the sport. That is not Formula 1. The future lies with a new engine one of at least 3.0 litres, V12, 20,000RPM, 900-950HP and a powerful KERS system. As for the car, increased downforce and fatter tyres. That is pushing the limits, that is competitive engineering and that is competitive racing. If you want to save your fuel and green eco stuff the apply that to normal road cars since that's the majority of cars.
kickthedonky that's the point. I want the glorious howling or screaming sound. With the new v6 sound, I might as well watch from home. No point buying tickets for the F1s anymore.

Randy R. Kelly Jr. there is no fun in having the computer do all the work for you the only motorsport left for men is formula D they drive manuals and they actually have to really on skill and not a computer.
Computers do a minimum. Driving takes skill
Lol if he can't control it without then he shouldn't be driving
Aidan D What computers are you talking about? Traction Control, Launch Control, Active Suspension and ABS have all been banned along with some other driver aids. Also, hate to say it, but flappy paddle gear box is faster and more reliable than a manual.
I see all these rules and restrictions and requirements for more efficiency to run counter to the very spirit of racing.
yep and they are not listening to the fans.
This was a really neat video. Be cool to see more along the same lines as this concept.
The world isn't flat after all. The world is a f1 car
Checkmate flat earthers
I don't know shit about cars, but this made me want to.
The PU regulations that costed Renault engine performance and reliability in Formula 1
And that's why Renault was a powerhouse during V10 and V8 NA days in Formula 1!
V6 SUUUUUUCKKKSSSSS. FORZA V10
i do agree with the environtmentalist that we have to make even motorsport more efficient, but tbh the v10 sounds waaaaaay better. but i think there's no way around it, we have to become an energy efficient species. outstanding video editing btw.
Best editing ive ever seen!!!
Nice video!. 2018
It is stolen from Red Bull
Great animation, but honestly the cars sound like MotoGP bikes. They killed that glorious F1 howl.
I don´t think you have ever heard a MotoGP bike live have you? :D
No need to troll.
When your at a motogp race you need earplugs. With the V6 you dont
kickthedonky that's the point. I want the glorious howling or screaming sound. With the new v6 sound, I might as well watch from home. No point buying tickets for the F1s anymore.
