    Here's a lesson in how I don't get entropy.

    • @gopackgo4036
      @gopackgo4036 5 หลายเดือนก่อน +1702

It’s simply probability. Second law of thermo says that entropy always increases, which is the same thing as saying the most probabilistic event will occur. Particles don’t actually care about physical “laws” they simply move randomly and some scenarios are much more likely to occur (ex. Energy moving from a hot to cold object) than others (ex. Energy moving from a cold to hot object).

Entropy is just a measure of disorder in a system. Simply put, if you have a glass and drop in on a concrete floor, it won't smash apart and then go back together again, right? Entropy is a fundamental concept that really just states that things like to be chaotic and spread out, specifically anything partaining to or being energy. The reason for this is just probability as mentioned above.

      @@popdop0074
Entropy and disorder are not the same as chaos. Order is defined as the availability of energy for work. Disorder is the lack of availability of energy for work.
Entropy is more equivalent to the harmonious distribution of energy than chaos. When a system has reached full entropy then that system will have reached its most stable state. Not its most chaotic.
I've never understood how people can relate entropy to chaos except that they are misinterpreting the terms disorder and order.

For those who want to know. There are 2 liquids. After the shake they are mix. And have an dencity between blue and white
After time these liquid seperate. The bottem liquid is denser then blue and the top is lighter than white. Meaning dencity order is bottem liquid, blue, white, top liquid. Thats why they flood towards each other only after waiting

Good guess. BUT Once there are two phase liquid after shaking appearing to be transparent, the liquids means dissolve with each other and it is homogeneous wont separate. If it appears to be emulsified, it means there are two liquid phase not dissolved and it tends to separate in to two layers. In the video, it is transparent

There are two liquids, one denser than the beads and one less dense, forcing the beads into the middle. When you shake the jar they mix together and instead of having two densities you have a uniform density for all liquid in the jar. The blue beads are denser than the uniform density and the white are less dense, so the beads separate. Eventually the liquid finds its way separated again and everything resets.

Entropy is just the “randomness” of something. The universe tends towards randomness. If you put cheerios and Froot Loops in the same bag and shake it up, that’s more entropy.
In a deeper sense it’s about thermodynamics (heat) and how it’s always made because of friction, therefore after billions and trillions of years the useful energy will all be used up. That’s the heat death of the universe. ❤

    My guess is this:
The liquid inside is two liquids with different densities. When he shakes the cylinder, the liquids mix, creating a mixture that has a density lower than the blue beads, but higher than the white beads. This causes them to sink and float respectively.
When he places the cylider down, the two liquids separate, the more dense one sinking. This liquid is more dense than the blue beads, so they rise. The opposite happens at the top; the less dense liquid is less dense than the white beads, so they sink.
They stabilize at the center because that's the interface of the two liquids. The white beads are more dense than the top liquid, but less dense than the bottom one, and vice versa.

Here he sits, a living machine more complex that the entire summation of every single machine made by mankind since the beginning of time, and he shakes a tube and tells us he's the product of random chance. A single cell in Bill's body is more complex than the entire city of San Francisco and the life of Bill is more valuable than all the collected matter in the universe. I wish he could see that.

Explanation: Here are 4 substances, (2 liquids and 2 sets of beads) with densities, going in the order:liquid1, dark bead, white bead, liquid2. When we shake them, we mix them, but they will come to the order by themselves eventually.
But how are they separated in the beginning after we shake them? It happens because two liquids when mixed can have a median density for awhile, but beads can’t. White beads are lighter than the median density and dark beads are heavier than the median density. This is why they are separated.
The secret of the trick is not in entropy but in densities

@@j0fiz986 So the rocks and sand along the edges of rivers don't automatically order themselves from largest to smallest via entropy? Funny, I thought they did. I'm pretty sure that's why beaches exist.
The point of the demonstration, IMO, is that "order" and "disorder" are not what you think they are. Order can be a homogenous mixing of elements, or it can be a clean separation of elements, or it can be anything in between. Same for disorder. It depends on what the system you're looking at is composed of, and what energy does in the system.
We see particles, such as the famous Higgs Boson, that only exist in a stable state when massive amounts of energy are applied, or else it disappears into the Higgs field. Conversely, pretty much every molecule known to man would be destroyed at much lower energy levels.
Like I said, you really can't look at a snapshot of a system and say whether it is in a state of high entropy or low entropy without knowing the details of what energy does in the system.

The mystery bead bottle contains two liquids, a concentrated solution of salt (sodium chloride) in water and isopropyl alcohol. The two liquids do not mix. Although isopropyl alcohol will mix completely with pure water, the salt dissolved in the water prevents the alcohol from mixing.
When the bottle is shaken, the salt water and isopropyl alcohol are mixed together and form a temporary emulsion (tiny drops of each liquid mixed together). The density of the emulsion is the average of the densities of the two liquids, namely (1.13 + 0.88)/2 or 1.00 g/cm3. The density of the emulsion is less than the density of the pony beads, so the pony beads sink to the bottom in the emulsion. The density of the emulsion is greater than the density of the Perler beads, so the Perler beads float to the top of the emulsion. As the bottle rests, the emulsion separates into its two components. The salt water separates at the bottom and the alcohol at the top. The pony beads float to the top of the salt water, but stay below the emulsion. The Perler beads sink to the bottom of the alcohol, but remain above the emulsion. As the emulsion separates, the beads come together again at the middle of the bottle.

Entropy isnt about order vs randomness. It only appears that way because the Universe hates information and actively tries to change or destroy it. And so just as matter and energy are subjected to the laws of thermodynamics, so too it's often theorized that information could be considered fundamental and subject to them aswell.
It appears to go from chaotic to ordered but there's no true information actually encoded in it.
It's just a water/alcohol hourglass. And hourglasses are MORE ordered while they tell you the time vs when they can't.

For those who are curious about the beads in the bottle, there’s two types of liquids in there. The clear liquid is less dense than the white beads. The blue liquid is denser than the blue beads. When the entire bottle is shaken, the two fluids are mixed together. When the bottle is let to sit momentarily, the beads will separate themselves. But over time, the fluids inside the bottle will also separate themselves, thus creating the effect of the beads separating into two orderly groups, then rejoining in the middle.

Our teacher explained entropy with a teenager's room: as soon as it is tidied up, it tends to turn back into chaos immediately. I understood that straight away...

@@aceystar1478entropy is pretty easy to understand. There are a million ways for a rubiks cube to be messed up but only one to be solved.
say you work at a cold room right next to a warm room with a door separating them.
If you open the door, it is extremely likely that the kinetic energy of the molecules of each room will disperse evenly across the 2 rooms. And as the time goes on the 2 rooms go further and further towards their most probable state: being the same temperature.
The only way you can keep the cold room cold and warm room warm is if you apply energy.

    high entropy = disorder
    low entropy = order
basically, entropy is a measure of disorder or randomness in a system.

All it is supposed to be is a representation.
Obviously it was crafted that way. The point is to have you follow along as it unfolds and see how your assumption of how it will end changes over time
      1. What did you expect to happen
      2. What actually happened
      3. Why did it happen
If you’re learning something new, even as common as engineering and baking. This happens all the time

I guess that depends on how far you want to take the definition of "disorder." That's actually a neat little philosophical question. If you intentionally create disorder, is it really disorder?

Gamers. Please use google. "A discrepant event is a surprising and paradoxical outcome that is not what an observer would normally expect. A most common example of a discrepant event would be oobleck." What he showed was basically a fancy oobleck. Part of what made the effect unexpected is that he lead by saying "this is a demostration of entropy." The beads separated as you'd expect from entropy but then they came back together. If y'all listened to him before calling the man senile you'd know the message is literally to just dig a little deeper and not expect all the answers to be handed to you. It's not that deep.
