    Some extra info, no one knows exactly what that black stuff is that commonly looks melted off in the upper right of the fridge where the copper refrigerant line goes from a small to a larger diameter. As a Mech Engineer thinking it through, this is clearly a thermal insulator. That copper pipe that is covered in the stuff is the expansion valve of the fridge where the high pressure refrigerant has its pressure rapidly dropped which causes its temperature to plummet allowing things to get cool. This is also where everyone's fridge is freezing up. You don't want to insulate the whole line because then what's the point of the fridge, but insulating it up here does make sense especially considering the frost build up issue.
    Thermal Mastics in fridges that you'll look up typically do the opposite, help conduct heat (like when a temp sensor is up against the metal section of an ice maker so it can get a better reading). This black stuff looks to be a foam tape thermal insulator that was then wrapped in either electrical tape or more likely a silicone tape to keep it in place (sometimes these foam tapes don't stick too well). There could even be some of the thermal insulation "goop" put on the copper pipe as well.
    I had the same issue where it looked "melted". My guess is it wasn't melted at all actually. I bet the ice freezing put it under a metric shit ton of compression making it appear to be melted (the thermal insulation epoxy "goop" i mention above could have been squeezed out too if used giving this effect). Any of this insulation that got onto your defroster cable likely did melt though as that gets very hot.
    Here's what I did: Thermal Insulation Foam Tape around the expansion valve just in that one section, then wrapped in silicone tape. More importantly, you need to check to see if any components need replacing. Use a multimeter to check the resistance through the defrost conductor (should be like 120 Ohm +/- 5% roughly), the Defrost Thermostat (should be very low resistance, like 0.2 Ohm at room temp which is unlike most fridges where it's be open at room temp), and most importantly the Thermistor which is that white sensor with the yellow wires that all that black goop went onto (it's resistance changes with temp, but should be roughly 6 kOhm at 68 F). My thermistor's resistance was 102 kOhm which is clearly fucked. The black thermal insulation that melted onto it also isn't helping it get a new reading. So if you don't change the broken thermistor, you're just gonna keep having problems regardless. Links below:

      I have been watching videos and reading numerous reviews and trying it all. I starting reading your post and shaking my head. Then I started working and immediately identified the same things you took your time to thoroughly explain and show because that's exactly what mine looked like black melted substance. That was completely melted off of where the plastic attachment goes. Which isn't showing in the video. I just wanted to say thank you. Just my luck but lucky you took the time to explain! Not sure yet if this will fix it but definitely is an identifiable problem. Wish me luck

    I have had a similar French door refrigerator since 2010. Recently, the auto defrost in the fridge compartment stopped working and caused the large mount of water accumulating under the deli tray. I powered off the refrigerator to manually defrost. When I powered it on, the temperature inside the fridge could not drop below 50 degree. I spent lots of time on searching the issue online and could not find clue.
    After watching this video, I wanted to do a finial try before buying a new refrigerator. I paid $9 for a sensor in Amazon. I was so excited seeing the temperature dropped below 30 after replacing the sensor.

    Probably the best “how to video” on TH-cam. I was able to replace it without a problem. I have a question regarding this part and Temperature Sensor DA32-00006S and Senso DA32-00011C. I’m confused as to the difference between what temperature these 3 measure and if I should replace all three. The description for all three is that they measure the refrigerator temperature and send the reading to the electronic control. The problem I am having is that the food and some liquids freeze inside the refrigerator and the display always shows 80 degrees. I went ahead and ordered all 3 items just in case. Hi Christian, the different temperature sensors measure temperatures in different areas of the refrigerator. Some sensors like the one shown in this video monitor the temperature for the automatic defrost cycle. Others measure the temperature inside the refrigerator or freezer compartment so the refrigerator can monitor and maintain the set temperatures.

    I have a Samsung French door RF4267HARS. I have a problem with water getting into the middle drawer above the freezer. It freezes and freezes any food or drinks in that compartment. I changed the defrost temp sensor in the fridge compartment and added a longer drain clip. It did have ice in the drain tube but not much ice overall behind the panel. After these repairs it is till freezing drinks in the middle drawer. Looks like there is another separate sensor in the roof of this compartment. Also looks like the roof panel in this drawer is removable. Can this sensor be replaced and is this the likely cause of my freezing problem or should I be looking at the freezer compartment below.

    If that panel has ice behind it you must thaw out the refrigerator or risk ruining the insulation behind and attached to the panel. 48 hours with the frig unplugged and doors open!! Push in on the bottom part of the panel and if you can hear a crunchy sound, it is frozen. Replace the drain tubes in the back of the frig also, set of 2. They make a kit for this repair but can be a real bear sometimes to do it. Check the drain underneath the evaporator once the panel is off and make sure it is clear, if not use very hot salt water and a turkey baster to thaw it out. Good luck.

      Yes, it will commonly cause ice and frost to build up on the evaporator coil. When this happens, sometimes the ice/frost will rub on the fan motor and cause a noise. The noise most likely stops when the door is opened because the fan motor turns off when the door is opened.

    What are the symptoms of a bad defrost sensor?

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  5 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      The evaporator coil that the sensor attaches to will be frosted/iced up so that air cannot flow through it. A light amount of frost is normal when the refrigerator is cooling but excess frost/ice is what causes problems. When this coil frosts/ices up it can cause multiple issues. 1. The refrigerator will not cool properly because air won't circulate. 2. The fan motor can stop running because it can't get to the proper speed for normal operation. This can cause an evaporator fan motor error code and cooling problems 3. The defrost hole hole can freeze up causing water to not drain and it will end up pooling below the vegetable drawers or at the bottom of the refrigerator compartment.

    Will this help with food freezing in the fridge section?

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Not normally. Usually when the defrost temperature sensor fails, the evaporator coil will get frosted up which causes the refrigerator to not get cold enough.

      @@PartsDr How do I determine if this is my problem? Our fridge isn't getting cool enough on its own without a boost from the Power Cool, but it thinks it is. The temperature setting reads the temp I set, but thermometers placed inside show higher temps. Is that why the fridge stops short of getting cool enough, and could that inaccurate temp reading be the reason why?

    How do I know which version my refrigerator is? I searched up my Model #: RF28HFEDBSR/AA but on your website it shows there are 17 similar results all from 0-17. I'm not sure which one to select. I looked at my sticker on my fridge and it says RF28HFEDBSR/AA with no numbers.

    Our samsung french door fridge and freezer seems to stop cooling every week. it works good except each week it stops cooling I realized if i cut the power and it will reset and start cooling again untill about a week passes. it is like it goes into defrost but does not restart.could this be the sensor? wold this be the freezer sensor or the fridge one or freezer sensor or both thanks.

    • @PartsDr

      That does not sound like a sensor problem. You can test the sensors like we show here to be certain: th-cam.com/video/J5bwcteeJNM/w-d-xo.html

    My Samsung it's not cooling right freezer is at 36 and refrigerator at 34. Would this defrost temperature sensor be the issue?

    • @PartsDr
      @PartsDr  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      It could be if your freezer isn't going through the automatic defrost cycle and the evaporator coil is full of frost.

      If a jumper is needed the refrigerator would include one from the factory.
