While I personally think it lacks some of the songwriting chops they showed off on Firepower, I absolutely agree that it’s genuinely vindicating to see a band of JP’s magnitude still be able to back up their legacy performance-wise.

    •  7 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Look its really strange. In my honest opinion this is their best songwriting since Sad Wings of Destiny. I can't deny Firepower's strenght - Rising from Ruins is a fukkin epic piece of work along with Traitors Gate (probably the best lyrics in history of JP), but somehow I found few cheesy lyrics in Necromancer or Flamethrower. Some childish phantasy, but very enjoyable musically.

  • @RE-vy4wn
    @RE-vy4wn 7 หลายเดือนก่อน +26

I made every effort to not listen to any of the songs on this album despite the singles and despite a 4-song EP whether legit or not circulating the web, and I wanted to listen to the whole thing as, well, a whole thing. And man, I got to tell you, that made for one awesome experience. I feel a lot of the same way you do about the album, especially with Rob's ability still to sound as good as he did from their best albums in the 80's and beyond, it's simply incredible for sure.
I really enjoyed Firepower (especially after it followed the recent output before it, including the long and tedious Nostradamus), but unless my opinion changes in the 11th hour, Invincible Shield stands to be my favorite album from Priest since, yep, you guessed it, Painkiller.
Awesome review as per the norm!

I love this album! I would also have to agree with you hoping that this is their last album. Others may disagree, but to my ears, this album includes scorching tracks like Panic Attack, anthemic numbers like Gates of Hell, and slower somewhat heavier tracks like Trial by Fire. This album is everything great about Judas Priest packed into one and I believe that if they are to end the band now, this is 10,000% the album to retire on.

It's a Great followup to FIREPOWER. They are different in nature and style, not a Firepower-2 album. INVINCIBLE SHIELD gets a medal for being Judas Priest's most progressive sounding metal album, with so many metal flourishes outside of the standard beat. We're talking about plethora's of metal lead guitars, theatrical-metal vocals and screams, meanderings into this or that, emotional soul inspired lyrics of yearnings, memories, regrets and life in general, but certainly with metal edges, metal visualizations, metal wording and themes. It's Judas Priest's most progressive sounding metal album, and for everyone afraid of listening and getting stuck into a beat grove, rest assured, this album is Judas Priest's most diverse of all, while retaining the trademark production sound of later albums from Angel of Retribution to Nostradamus to Redeemer of Souls to Firepower. The production sound qualities are more on par with Firepower than any other, with a newly sanded sheen to be smooth to the ears. The songs are certainly fast and heavy, but then too their are moments of almost balladry, like with Crown of Horns. Still, even that one is fast and furious, steeped in emotional soulful lyrics to give it that overall tone. I'd call it a metal-soul music tune more than ballad. And, it along with God As My Witness, Trail by Fire and the title track scream "Grammy Award: Best Metal Tune" for January 2025. It's got the Grammy type song writing: emotional lyrics, eyeing the past, looking forward and social consciousness, that I've found to be the Grammy Award Winning tunes that our musical authorities pick out for accolades. Look for Invincible Shield to mentioned MANY TIMES next year during the ceremony, and if doesn't come out a winner, then something serious has changed within the music institutions order of power. Now how is Firepower so different? Firepower is less flourishing musically, more steady in beat and aggressive hard rock in style, an overall more machismo type album with musical paths like a train track, and carried out by the enormous Judas Priest metal train. With Invincible Shield, Judas Priest has wings, and they are soaring like an eagle, difficult to catch at first try, but all the while so inspiring to watch and listen to, then it swoops down on you like a predator as soon as you think it's time to take a seat to relax. It's an amazing album, and they successfully shifted gears for a fresh feast for listeners, both young and old.

Personally the new Priest album is tighter (when excluding the 3 bonus tracks & keeping it at 11 tracks) and better riff-wise when compared with Firepower, with no large dip in the middle like I felt last time plus some subtle sonic dynamics and Travis sounds more active this time. Solid 8/10 and made me jump like a kid on a sugar high at several points so that’s something.

Although I thought Redeemer was a good album, Firepower was great but I was just a tad less enthusiastic about it than others. Especially the last three songs were a bit lacking. But then comes this thing. My oh my. I had to agree that Firepower was the best since Painkiller - I have the audacity to say that this is - together with Painkiller of course - their most consistent album since Defenders (although I love Turbo as well, always have.) I saw them live and they still bring it. I haven´t listen to the album for a month now after giving it quite a few spins leading up to the concert, but now I´ll dive back in and see how it progresses with time. I particularly love the many Defenders - Screaming and sometimes even Hell bent / Stained Class references. Not as overtly Screaming meets Painkiller like Firepower or as 70s bluesy doomy British steel and Angel of Retribution like Redeemer. I had my doubts if they were able to top such a high class album such as Firepower, lo and behold they did.

I consider this album to be a sidegrade to Firepower. It's stronger in some aspects (the guitar technicality) and worse in others (repetitive lyrics). But considering the high bar legends like Judas Priest have set for themselves over the decades, I think it speaks volumes to the raw talent and personal care the band have given themselves to create something this good.
We know that they are legends for a reason, so why shouldn't we hold legends to a higher standard? If this is Priest's final album, I'd say they've gone out with a bang, no question.

Big time. This is a much better album than firepower which in its own right was mostly praised. Halford sounds great and if it’s Richie handling most of the solos this time out then he knocked it out the park. Never underestimate old people in metal (also in rock as well, Rolling Stones’ Hackney Diamonds is a freaking jam) ❤ if they retire or not then I don’t know maybe I’d like to see them continue.

I've only given it one listen so far, and I think it's a great album. Not sure it's as good as firepower, but with a few more listens that could change.

I agree that the album needed a bit trimming
Maybe remove some weaker cuts and replace them with bonus tracks (The Lodger is too good to be a bonus track, just saying)
But overall? Priest are one of my favourite metal bands at this point and this album didn't disappoint me. Maybe not as superb as Firepower, but definitely enough staying power to keep at least four tracks in rotation, which is a big compliment for me
Someone should get all the other older metal bands together in the room, play them Firepower and Invincible Shield back to back and say "See? That's what you should have been doing"

I was so, so, so, SOOOOOO impressed with this new Judas Priest album! Yes, it's long, BUT WHO CARES WHEN ALL OF THE SONGS ARE AT LEAST GOOD AT THEIR WORST??? Along with Saxon's newest album and the debut EP from new German band Writhen Hilt, this new JP is one of the best trad metal albums I've heard in 2024 so far. So, SOOO freaking great! 🤘
And if you love dissonant death metal, the Australian one-person project Convulsing just dropped their third full-length album the other day, and IT. RIPS! Check it out if you are a fans of bands like Ulcerate or Gorguts.

Edit: after seeing them live i can safely say that they still got it

Loved Dickinsons album way more, it had more emotion and is more varied. I missed the times when you never knew what Priest would do, now they have made three similar albums in a row. I like it when AC/DC does that not Priest.

Its a great album. You praise the album for the 'twin guitar leads', which is misleading. Richie Faulkner is the sole lead guitar player here, lets be honest.

Imho superb review by Mr. Metal Meltdown. In spite of being JP fan I have always tried not to be a typical fanboy who adores everything he's been given. On the contrary its important to show weakness of every album in order to gain a certain detached view. I can't deny hating Redeemer of Souls. It was for me the embodiment of tired old farts who desperately try to stay relevant in a world that goes through huge changes. Very weak songwriting, childish songs, Rob sounding tired like its his last hour and that horrible produciton! On the contrary what we got here that is nothing short of amazing. Vocals are not from this plant, solos are one of the strongest. All younger bands (including Iron Maiden sigh sigh) could take a note or two. For me its probably the best heavy metal album of 2024, but we have to wait for sure.
