I used to play Battletoads in Battlemaniacs hoping that "the next stage will go back to a beat 'em up style. I know it." but it never did.
If they had kept the style the same as Stage 1 and 2 it would be a classic. RIP.

I played Battletoads Double Dragon all the time with my mom as a kid. It was one of our favorite SNES games. We never tried the "B" setting, that would have made it a lot easier!

Battletoads & Double Dragon is one of the best SNES games ever, imo. It's a LOT of fun especially in co-op, there's really good variety with levels and styles, and the game is full of humor as well. Also, its soundtrack is superb. Seriously, it's one of the best OSTs in the SNES and that's saying something! Don't believe me? Look up the soundtrack and listen to the tracks. So atmospheric, cool, pretty, catchy. It's great.

Player mode A (where you can hit each other / friendly fire) is suuuuper fun when playing with a buddy! I remember laughing my ass of nonstop because we would accidentally boot each other off the screen and get so angry, but it was all in good fun and we'd end up cracking up. God I miss those days :D

I swear I'm the only person I've ever known who's just... never had a problem with the Turbo Tunnel, in either the original game OR Battlemaniacs. It's the snake level that always gets me! That's almost always where I get my Game Over, in both titles.
I also really enjoy the mix of level types -- I specifically prefer original Battletoads AND Battlemaniacs to Battletoads & Double Dragon because there's a greater variety of level designs. It's not ALL beat-em-ups, but constantly changing from one gameplay type to another. That's super rad, and really fun for me! In the original Battletoads, it was always the ice stage I really looked forward to the most -- though that underwater stage with the tubes and the gears that would chase you was also super cool, and both the waveboard and jet stages were like the Turbo Tunnel but even better. Too bad I had so much trouble getting to those latter few stages consistently thanks to that stupid-ass snake stage! ;) I love the snake stage in concept, and the NES game's version of it was much easier than Battlemaniacs' (which i don't think I've ever actually beaten!), but it's just SO DAMN HARD...

@@Jack_80 It's pretty much a repacking of half the levels of the NES version, true. It looked nice, but a lot of the charm was missing for me, especially the music. The NES game soundtrack is crazy good. Battlemaniac had like one good track I can think of and even then it's not on par.

I practiced with states and just kept getting gunned down. Then it reminded me that this game contained typical battletoads bullshit. The bosses should atleast have some kind of pattern. It seems you have to pull some type of bullshit to cheap out the bosses.

Battletoads and double dragon is definitely worth playing. But for Battlemaniacs it depends on what level of challenge your looking for. In my opinion that hacksaw level alone (I think it's level 5) almost makes the whole game harder than battletoads for nes. Also the turbo tunnel was a very cool level in both games. I think it's unique amongst all levels in video game history and it sure does feel satisfying when you finally beat it.

A LOVE LETTER IN DEFENCE OF BATTLETOADS IN BATTLEMANIACS lol
Battlemaniacs is a remake of the NES game indeed but for those who never played the NES version, it's a completely fresh, awesome and most impressive game !
Yes of course you would expect that the beat'em all gameplay would be a little more proeminent after level 1, but at the same time, once you realize that the ambition of the game is precisely to make you experience a different and exciting gameplay for each level, you understand you're playing a very unique (and non-repetitive) game for once !
Then you could say that the game is hard.
    Well yeah, sure.
But it's not insanely hard ! With a little practice, it's really rewarding to master the entire game, especially on two players mode !
This is what we call a "challenging game", and that's really a part of its charm !
And it's not challenging because the controls are broken or the difficulty is so cruelly unbalanced that your victory reposes on only shear luck ! There's a lot of "die and retry" sure, but then again it's a game you CAN master !
And it's particularly thrilling when you do, because you can anticipate these intense moments of action and tension when, for example, you get at the ending of level 2 (with the sudden speed up between the narrowing spikes !) or the ending of level 3 (when the walls are suddenly not blinking and forcing you to an extreme death-slalom !) or even in the middle of level 4 (when your speed and your timing has to be perfect to slide on ice and catch the right snake at the right time !)
I mean, it's really not the routine of the beat'em all, when you just get more and more stronger opponents and you just beat them again and again. Here everything is well-thought out to give you an intense experience of diverse kinds of gaming !
I would nuance a little bit by saying that the last level is not the most inspired, probably the biggest weaknes of the game for me after so many great levels.
But on the other hand, the bonus stage with the keels is AWESOME. I really don't get why "snes drunk" is so dismissive while talking about it. It's fast, it's tense, the music is amazing and it's a chance to get some extra lifes before getting to the more challenging levels !
As for the "2 players mode A", I don't get why it is pointed out as a flaw, I mean "why not ??!"
At least you can choose to use it or not !
Personnaly, I prefer "mode B" because it's already an enough challenging game as it is, but if you're starting to master the game and want another layer of difficulty, this is great !
Besides, "mode A" is a lot of fun ! As said in the comments, it is fun when you can hit your buddy once in a while (accidentally or not 😎), or even when you're suddenly making a big mess for not paying enough attention to your surroundings !
Finally, the rock soundtrack is REALLY awesome and the cartoony graphics are among the best ones at the time !
So as I'm concerned, Battlemaniacs is probably in my top 10 games for the SNES, and it should be better known among the aficionados of action games on this console.

To be fully honest, one little cheatcode that can indeed improves your experience of the game is :
During the "tradewest presents" at the very beginning of the game, press and hold A, B, and Down, then press Start.
It will give you 5 lives (instead of 3) and 5 continues (instead of 3, I think)
      it helps a lot, I admit 😉

I just realized I've never played a Battletoads game of any kind. Same goes for the NES Batman. I guess those came out just after the 16-bit consoles from Sega & NEC came out.

He called one of the Double Dragon guys "Sid" when the screen said "Jimmy" I don't bring it up to "own" him or harp on him at all but I am legit curious if there's an obvious (to somebody) reason why that would happen? I only played the first double dragon and it's been 15-20 years since I played it...

Battlemaniacs is great and brings the difficulty without the game being too long. I always find myself using warps in the original because there are so many stages.

The NES version is the best. The fluidity of the controls and the movement of the game is just better. Also the sound isn't all muffled and synthesized

I never played Battletoads and Double Dragon, so I can't give my opinion on that. I have played and beaten Battlemaniacs, though, and I have to disagree with the final part of the video. If you have to choose between the NES and SNES versions of Battletoads, play the SNES version. It's still difficult, but it's less cheap than the NES version, prettier, the two bonus levels allow you to stock up on extra lives, and if you feel like some grinding, juggling those bugs in the second stage can net you the max amount of lives. Also, if you have a slow motion controller, you can make the last part of the speeder bike stage easier.

    • @Jack_80
      @Jack_80 3 ปีที่แล้ว

that hoverbike level on the genesis is annoying. when you have to jump over the 3 walls in a row, it's so much more awkward to time because it makes you jump twice as long as in the nes version, but the walls seem to come at the same rate. idk, the genesis version looks a bit nicer, but i prefer the style and feel of the nes version.
the snes version would be much better if they didn't cut out nearly half the levels.

Idk if it's just me, but I prefer the Sega version of Battletoads and Double Dragon. The controls feel smoother and the music has a deeper feel to it. I remember playing the SNES version, and the enemies SWARM you. In the Sega version, it's still tough but seems more fair. Again, it could just be me.

  • @willia3r

Battlemaniacs always felt like it was a shortened version of the NES Battletoads.
Plus, Battlemaniacs didnt really any fist-fight levels so it never made full use of the characters' fighting capabilities.
It was a disappointment in general to say the very least.
