Hard to believe this is an NES game. These devs showed their obvious mastery of the platform here. They did an absolutely beautiful job with the all the cool parallax, color, and just how well it plays. Not to mention the characters are all unique. Bravo Rare, Bravo

The ultimate team! A well-made classic beat-em-up. The faux 3D effects that Rare crafted certainly made a unique look for the company's games.

16:50 The strategy used for taking out the left ryders is definitely a good safe strategy. I noticed, however, for the right ryders that you still used kicks to beat them. Instead, do a dash towards them and ram into their bikes. This knocks them off faster and will give more time for the pod bonus section "Collection Time" in the notes in the top-left.

I also find that simply pushing the directional pad in the direction the bad guy is in, plus attack, will guarantee you hit first. IDK why that took so long for me to figure out, I used to drop crazy lives here!

The NES version was first, with the SNES, Genesis, and Game Boy editions coming later (but only about 6 months). Probably much easier to port an NES game to the SNES with it's superior hardware.

I loved Battletoads so much when I was a kid, I must’ve rented it over 100 times. I have never been able to beat it. I didn’t know this game was on the NES, I use to rent it for the SNES. Having Bimmy and Jimmy in the same game as the Battletoads was so awesome at the time.

  • @dieinfire920

One of my fave games on the nes. I think it’s on the easy side though, except for the shooter stage where is easy to lose lives, and maybe the long stage 3.
We do things differently, for example I try to get the maximum points from enemies, so when I know the enemy is on the floor and that’s it’s their last HP left, instead of the final attack that would give you 1000 points, I do a running attack (knee drop) so I’ll get 5000 points instead.
Edit: best example are the hands. The hands need to be attacked three times with regular attacks, or just one knee drop. I keep the knee drop for the third attack, that way I get a total of 7000 points.
Also, not mentioned in the video:
-in the bike stage, if you double tap to the right, the bike would slide/dash forward to the right, if you double tap and press attack, you’ll slide and attack and that attack is one hit one kill on the bikers in front of you.
-if you run and press jump at the moment you get into the bike, you’ll take a very big offscreen jump. This also works on the first battletoads. (Useless trick, but a curiosity).
-you can hit some of the yellow arrows on the cable areas on stage 3, for some extra points.
-on stage 2 the guys in the window throwing dinamites if you are at the door, you can throw and pick immediately the same dinamite (it will explode but you still will be able to grab it, so essentially you can do beat the guy using the same one dinamite. Don’t remember if this works also on the window guys in the rocket stage).
-in the missile/rocket stage on the windows with the three guys throwing dinamite, if you time it right, you can carry a dinamite and throw to the two rats coming for you.

      -ninja gaiden 3
      -conquest of the crystal palace
      -cowboy kid

Thanks for doing this game! Man, Battletoads had so much creativity and style, every level was its own self-contained episode in some grand adventure. Pay attention to the sprite animations and you can really see the love the developers put into this game. This crossover with Double Dragon blew my mind! Now, how about a game where the Battletoads meet TMNT? Hmm, maybe that only happened in my playroom as a kid...

Battletoads & Double Dragon... pretty much all the stuff covered on the NES version works on SNES and Genesis, Game Boy is... weird, but this was my entry-point to the Battletoads series. By the way, once I was able to play all versions, I play the GB version the least (haven't really played it seriously), followed by the SNES version and finally tied the NES and Sega Genesis (I feel the SNES version being the hardest, followed by the NES and finally the Genesis version when it comes to hardest to easiest for me).
Edit: I didn't know the game had the equivalent of the Toad code from the 1st Battletoads... how curions (not that I really needed it when I got extremely used to the game). Something you didn't mention in Stage 2 is at the bikers segment of the ride if you beat the bikers very fast you can get more pods and potentially more 1-ups in the process, if they leave (or you take too long) you can get no pods for score or 1-ups. Roper on stage 3... I think they named Wily "Roper" by mistake (not if that matters anyway).
Back when I played the game for the 1st time, I wasn't able to beat stage 4 and didn't knew about the stage select cheats, but about in 2000 or 2002 I was able to beat the game... by the way, speaking of stage 4 the last set of mines can also be destroyed (but not a good idea due to how fast they move and that if they hit you is instant-"ded" so... not worth the trouble), also... if you're about to die in stage 4, you can kill yourself with the missiles you can launch and get 1000 points for that in case you need score (yeah, that's stupid, but the game allows it).
At least on the NES version, the Dark Queen can cheese you when she moves fast... so... the more lives you have, the easier the fight goes in the long run.

Not sure if it works for the NES version, as I owned the Sega version, but in level 3, whenever you initiate a rope section, the arrow the shows the direction to go, which flies off screen, can be hit if you're quick enough, netting you a small boost in points.
For example, at 22:09, you could jump in the air and hit the flying arrow.
It's a very small boost in points, but if you're trying to rack as many as possible for extra lives, just thought it'd be worth mentioning.

@professor84 I could be wrong, but as far as I can tell, it's just jump height and speed. Billy jumps much higher, but it takes longer for the jump to start, as in there is a slight pause after you press A. I did some testing, and of the Toads zitz jumps the fastest but lowest, pimple jumps the highest but slowest, and rash is in the middle. The differences between the Toads are less significant than with the Dragons

Always a treat to watch (any) of your mellow chill playtroughs.
IF you take requests... Not sure if you do, To see an Addams Family (SNES or SEGA Mega Drive/Genesis UCBVG would be most welcome. Such a great platformer with somehow hard to master controls. I never beat the game though in the past.
    Anyway. Keep it up. CHeers.

It's fun trying to figure out how the graphic tricks were pulled off. They take a lot of advantage of the fact that the NES sprites don't flicker so long as there are no more than 8 on one scan line. So, tall, vertical shapes are easy to do. The level intro callouts appear at the top of the screen, away from the action and there's no competition for sprite rendering. Some of the scrolling tricks are _probably_ done by changing tile definitions using character RAM instead of ROM, I think.

Friendly Fire On is the only way to play 2 player games. What's the point of having friends if you can't "accidentally" punch them??

You can recycle the dynamite if you try to grab it quick when is about to enter the door and still dmg the doorman

For those wondering, here are the differences between the character within each group: I could be wrong, but as far as I can tell, it's just jump height and speed.

I see you got a new dog you can beat. Awesome. I think GI Joe and Transformers would be an awesome mashup. Thank you brother

That not only would have been cool, but seems possible since Hasbro owns both! Two toy lines make sense, you could infiltrate bases as GI Joes and fight big battles as transformers

I still find it funny how they called the Lee brothers bimmy and jimmy lol. They didn't even correct the double dragons names. Regardless this game is one long ride of pain if it's your first time playing.

At first it might seem like, "Why....why would you combine these two?!" but really with their difficulty and game play they're probably the most alike to put together
