    Thank you! I've been fighting with adjusting my bandsaw for quite awhile, honestly I had been doing way over-complicated things to try to fix my drift issues, this was so simple and super effective.

    This is seemingly a crazy technique, but it makes perfect sense, and others use the same technique. I think it is awesome. It just takes time to accept it and trust it to work. I would have never thought of this. Maybe if I did a lot of band saw cutting. I just got my first band saw and it was like where have you been all my life. But after cutting aluminum the blade on my very small consumer grade band saw is dull and I am drifting badly. This is a great technique and perhaps the only real solution, especially for a dull blade that wants to turn. I am going to try this, and I know it is going to work, and it is going to be an amazing solution to a problem that is not solvable without buying a new blade.

    Finally! Someone made a simple concept appear simple and not brain surgery! Thank you.

    Thanks, will have to give this a go. Just purchased a new band saw (only a cheap one) Tried it out with the fence and very distressed with the first results. So will give your tip a go and see how it goes. i have to say that you get what you pay for so can't expect perfection or every one would purchase the cheap ones. Love simple tips that are explained well. Always makes me think "why didn't I think of that". Cheers.

    Thank you! This has caused me concern today, as I am a novice and just getting used to setting up and making accurate cuts with the fence was discouraging...

    Why not adjust the under bolts on the table?

    Super informative! Only problem I have now is that I have to make a rip fence for my table saw lol. have a miter gauge for it but still not a fence. Have a Craftsman 12" bandsaw 2spd. But again this is super helpful.

    Why some woodworkers talk about bandsaw blade drift when "Alex Snodgrass" video said bandsaw blade drift would not happen if the blade is adjusted correct.

    Here we go again, I see this all over youtube. I don't know who started this incorrect method but please learn the proper way to align your fence to blade drift. The fence should be parallel to the miter slot. The bolts that hold the table should be loosened and the entire table should be twisted to match the blade. You can't use the miter gauge to get an accurate cut otherwise. If you don't own a miter gauge for your saw, it's not a problem. I have two 14'' and an 18'' in our shop and I use the miter gauges all the time.

      What you fail to realize is that a bandsaw is very different from a table saw. The blade is supported by several thrust bearings that when adjusted properly allow for a small amount of space that causes a small amount of blade deflection. Each blade will respond differently depending on thickness, sharpness, etc.

    • @waynebusse6376
      @waynebusse6376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lordshiplures What I don't fail to realize is you can't learn anything new. I have a jet 18'' jet for re saw, a 14'' powermatic with a 1/8'' blade for scrolling, and a 14'' jet for everything in between. I also have a portable band mill that I mill up to 36'' logs and mill 100,000 bdft of lumber each year. There isn't anything I don't know about band saw blade drift, hook angle, set, and tracking. Did you read the comments from the last several years? I'm not the only one calling you out on trying to teach an incorrect method of tuning your band saw.

    • @lordshiplures
      @lordshiplures  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Wayne, the amount of bandsaws you own and the other comments are irrelevant. There are several factors involved that cause blade drift ranging from blade sharpness, feed speed, material that’s being cut, etc, etc. Blade tension alone can have a major impact. You can go ahead and set your fence square to the miter slot and hope for the best but I’m going to keep doing it the way I show in the video. Have a nice day.

    • @waynebusse6376
      @waynebusse6376 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @@lordshiplures I prefer my manual saw mill verses a hydraulic mill as I get feedback on how sharp the blade is by how hard I have to push the saw head. I keep a six foot straight edge handy and check the cant every couple cuts to check for dips in the cut. If I sawed a bunch of wavy lumber for customers I wouldn't get any return business. When sawing extremely hard and dense woods like hedge and black locust I switch to a wider and thicker blade with more hook angle. When the push resistance increases and the blade starts to wonder, I'll switch to something like poplar or walnut and can get a few more logs out of that blade. Even the smallest metal strike will ruin the cut and something like a cut nail or hardened barn spike means digging the blade out with a chainsaw or just cutting the blade off with an angle grinder so yeah, I know about blade sharpness. Vertical band saws are different in size and cost of blades but still the same animal. I use my 14'' Jet to cut shoulders on tenons using the miter gauge and I don't hope for the best, I change the entire table to match the blade so I can use the miter gauge and fence like it was intended with the fence '' parallel '' to the miter slot.

    drift is a myth

  • @torgy91766
    @torgy91766 13 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you are cutting thin strips or cuts without sharp curves the wider blades work better about 1 inch or more. Should offer straighter cuts without much drift
    A narrow blade is more for curves, the narrower the blade the tighter the curve.

    Why not adjust your bandsaw to eliminate drift,

    • @NOLALongboards
      @NOLALongboards 8 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Marcello Bianchi I tend to agree with this, there's also just doing what it may take to get a job done in a pinch. In my experience with my bandsaw, the one blade I have that drifts is one that I kinked when the piece of log I was cutting slipped, and that blade drifts so far you wouldn't want to adjust to it.

  • @hillbilly918

    Why not charge the tracking? Changing the fence won't help the crosscut ( miter)

  • @rareroots

    Bandsaw drift is NOT a myth. I resaw exotic hardwood on a 32" Crescent with a Lenox Tri-master carbide blade and you most definitely need to find the drift line. If you simply clamped a fence parallel to the blade slot you would experience binding and burning. Good video here

    Does the drift angle change with the thickness of the wood? Do I need to cut a blank with the same thickness as my work piece? Probably.

    just leave the piece of wood there and lift your bearings up. then press the fence up to the piece of wood so you don't have to draw on your table.
