I throw a swimming fluke on a T rig a lot. Im an urban bank beater and I've come to enjoy a minimalist approach in terms of gear. My go to is the Texas rig if im only taking 1 rod. I can carry a single mixed bag of plastics with a top water toad, swimming flukes and a worm or creature with terminal and leader. It covers the whole column, I can switch presentations without re-tying and it all fits in my pocket.

Have fished it nearly 3 years now and have yet to catch a bass on a swim bait. No hope - will abandon it soon and go back to nothing but tried-and-true basics that always work. Crank baits, plastic worms, spinner baits, jigs. Will give up on it like I gave up on Carolina Rigs, many years ago after several years of failure...

That takes me back to 1975. I was a kid in high school. I used to get salt water swim baits and fish them just as you described. There were some plastic worms and such, but not like today. I used to mix colors and pour my own worms too. I would take straight shank hooks and bend them like your hook example in a vise with pliers and a torch to heat the hook. I used a colored bead and pegged it at the knot to give it a tad bit of weight. I would use a 6'6" medium spinning rod and reel. I was fishing streams and creeks and ponds in Texas. Something old is new again. Nice.

Randy, I was sitting on our dock when I saw this video pop up. Tried it out with a smaller/lighter version with 2/0 hook and 1/16th oz. wt on spinning gear. I wanted to see how well it would skip…I can’t skip worth anything on a bait caster. I caught a nice little smallmouth on the second cast under the dock. Next time you fish a tournament on Pickwick and put in in Florence, let me know. You have a free place to stay!! What I’ve learned from you and Johnny are worth more than a week’s rent!!

I fish strictly from the bank here in South Louisiana, and I found out that Texas rigging swim baits was an easy way to run them weedless without ruining the action. I recently tried an ultralight version with only a 1/16 oz weight and it worked really well for me too

I've been fishing the smaller pattern that exact way here in Ireland for years. With a sliding bullet lead, it gives the bait a shallower dive on the pause. Perch absolutely slaughter them here and Jack pike too. I use size 10 Gamakatsu hooks with a diy nichrome wire link for a better hold.

Where I'm at Water Chestnuts are choking the river. This rig works great for bass, perch, and pike. One mistake I made in the past was buying sinkers at Wal-Mart. The front of the sinkers are so flat they get caught up in the weeds still. A weedless hook also makes it so you don't have to reset the hook every three casts.

  • @AlexandertheGregfishing

Because I fish mostly tidal rivers with bank cover I started fishing this bait on a jig hook with a weedguard, but later I changed to Texas rig like in this video. When they are on it, it catches a better than average fish.

Here in Sweden I have done a lot of flipping with swimbaits of the keitech style or Daiwa baitjunkie minnow on a free rig, not too unsimilar to the free sliding weight that you use Randy! Works wonders for perch when they hug the bank or brushes. Almost always get the bite almost instantly on the drop or after the first lift. Actually, your bass fishing tips have really influenced my perch fishing and for that I am very thankful!

Sweden is a beautiful country. I had an exchange student from the Gothenburg area for a school year. We got to be good friends. His parents paid for me to visit the next summer for 3 weeks. We caught a lot of cod from the island where they had a summer house (off grid) and in the boat. I tried freshwater for pike but no luck. I was 17 and Midsummer's Eve was in the middle of my trip. I have only great memories of Sweden and I'd love to go back, it's been over 30 years. After putting your tungsten bullet weight on, thread the line back through the back of the weight then tie a uni knot in front of the weight. You can push everything hard-up against the bait/hook or leave a bit of a gap for some movement and sound. Dynamite set-up you can throw anywhere including heavy cover.

Keitech is by far....by far the best brand of paddle tail in my experience - the plastic is so much softer that the tail swims like a real bait - so real, I want to bite the thing. Problem is I go through a lot of them because they're so fragile; but by far I get way more bites with a Keitech.

Hi from Bonita. If you want to drastically increase your catch rate and don't need to worry about super weedless - turn the weight around so it's acting as a popper - you can add a small split shot up 2-12" from hook and fish weight above that to keep away from hook. This works for Snook, reds, and others in salt as well.

This guy is from an era where fishing was genuinely fishing, you were rewarded for thinking out the box and applying trial and error, nowadays most anglers are just another form of consumer doing what the big companies tell them to do on yt so the big companies can push there products, the fact is, people have caught fish for thousands of years, these big companies hold no secrets to the sport, all you need is a rod, a reel, some line, a hook and a bait, maybe some form of indication depending how you're fishing, people have used the basics for years and caught fish no different than today, learn to fool a wild creature Instead of being fooled by a big company, most stuff made today is to catch the attention of the angler and not the fish

Isnt that a texas rig? I throw this way all spring long. I even have a texas jig from amazon. Same thing but the lead is built on the hook.

I have seen people use this rig for Walleye.

I have done about the same thing, using a weighted hook the only thing that sucks about it is you have to rig the bait before you tie the hook on or it tears up the bait too much.

Pinch a weight on a bare hook once you have rigged the swim sit. Take the weight off if you need to rig a new bait

I use this bait in summer on a nose hook weightless shallow and fish slow.

What's up with the ribs on those baits? Why is that better than smoother sided baits?

Try it on a Carolina rig.
