Catch And Cook - Key West Scavenger Soup

  • Catch And Cook - Key West Scavenger Soup.
The plan was soup. The ingredients was up to what I could catch. I pulled a nice 16" Mangrove Snapper from the Backcountry Mangroves using my new Shakespeare Ugly Stik GX2 combo. Although that was the general plan for the soup, I figured that adding some additional components would make it a more appealing "seafood soup". I hit the pipes to catch a few Shrimp (I got a few but they were small so mixed up some bait shrimp I had in the freezer) and lucked out by spying a really nice size Spider crab hiding amongst the rocks. That quickly became an addition to the soup. So, in the end we ended up with a nice "seafood" soup made with snapper chunks, spider crab, and Shrimp. I decided to go with a bit of Italian flair on this one.
    Soup Info:
I created a fish stock using the head and skeletal remains of the Mangrove Snapper. I threw in some yellow onions, celery, carrots, garlic, green onions, and a can of vegetable broth. After simmering for around 15 minutes, I drained the fluid which became the fish stock.
For the main soup, I used the fish stock, shrimp, mangrove chunks, spider crab, and added chunks of celery, red onions, bell peppers, garlic, green onion, and a can of whole peeled tomatoes.
For toppings I used some chopped Basil and Cilantro with a side of hearty toasted bread.
    Yea, it was great.

Key West Kayak Fishing, Who said anything about drive thru lol.. I never fast food, I'm a chef and cook all my organic meals.. plus, I grow all my veggiez.. I said catch cause it's been a while since last I went fishing.. now I only have one reel working and all thee others have gone bad.. Sucks going with one rod and reel combo... cutting the line to change hooks, weights, gulp, jiggs, etc everytime you change up thee targeted fish..

  • @nefala00

I love your your videos and have learned so so much from you. Now let me pass on a tip. I'm from MD and grew up eating crabs. Boil, simmer, or steam the crab whole with what ever your making. Or you could even cleaver it in half. But what ever you do, dont get rid of the guts. Cook, clean out the gills/face and the fat will turn a bright yellow. It's like the ultimate dipping sauce for the meat. Man ol man. Also during disassembling the crab, pull the apron off. This gives you a gap in the back of the shell that you can get you thumb in easy. Then lift the shell off like your opening the trunk of a car. One last tip, after the shell is cooked and taken off the crab, take a butter knife or something and check inside the shell in those points (what you measure for keepers). Its the same taste and consistency of lobster claw point meat. Super easy. Tight lines!

New subscriber here Steve. Great video! I catch a lot of spider crabs here up north stealing my bait, but never knew you can eat them. Now I know. I will definately try your recipe. Thanks!

Wowww awesome video!!! It's been a while I've had fish soup specially fresh out the ocean!!! This made my mouth water!!! Just missing a little bit of salt and pepper for my taste ha...Unless I got hipnotice and missed it!! Love all your videos!! Watch them every day, can't wait till the day I move to Florida!!! I put a bit of pepper but didn't need much salt. I always like to add at the end to taste. You can add it but you can't take it out.

Fantastic dish- well done! Reminds me of cioppino, and it's one of my favorite. You are the second person i know that eats spider crab, he said the meat is really sweet. I'm gonna give it a try.

Pretty much a thrown together Cioppino. Very sweet meat. Just not a lot of it. I wouldn't throw one back.

Ran across your channel. I'm living vicariously through your channel.
Lived in the center of the state back in the early 90's.. If it weren't for the lack of quality jobs? I'd still be there..
    Keep up the great content.

Please can someone just explain to me how the crab was still moving when it has been split in half?

Me too. This one was low on liquids and high on meat so very acceptable soup.

what kind of crab do you prefer for a soup?? because here in my country i only see soups with blue crab, none with spider crab or similar, some people said to me that they werent good to eat

    • @KeyWestKayakFishing
      @KeyWestKayakFishing  7 ปีที่แล้ว

I think most people are afraid of them because of their appearance. We have Stone Crab (claws), Blue Crabs, and the Spiny Lobster as our base crustaceans.

Was the crab still alive when you splitted it? Trying to figure out what to do at that part when it comes to cooking.
