Awesome video Wally! Thanks for sharing and great camera work Brent! Quick question: how do you know when to go up or down on temperature? Thanks again.
practice practice practice. Get comfortable and burn some rods. Watch your keyhole like the gentleman said. Play around with the heat on thinner material...and PRACTICE!! lol
Great mention on positioning your body, most people don’t get that at all and they can’t lay a steady bead because of it. Being comfortable is key. Good video!
TheWeldProfessor Thx Bro! Want to ask you a serious question. I’m seriously considering a career change. I’m currently a local truck driver in North Carolina and looking a change. I have some welding experience and was wanting to get on the pipeline. I just purchased a SA200 to start practicing pipe welding. I’m 38 years old. Do you think starting at a later age in the pipeline is a good decision? Thanks in advance
can start at any age... Its the hood time that matters... IF you`re going straight for pipe.. I mean Id probably at least first attempt all position open root plate tests... here in Canada its a pre-req for pipe ticket anyway.. Once you feel comfortable running that key hole with both 6010/6011 rods and running your hot pass and cap with 7018 take your pipe test.. Pipe is expensive as fackkk thats why I suggest the plate first 3/8th or 1/2`inch plate get a feel for what gap you like most people run 3/32 or 1/8th but thats welder preference usuallly you just knock the flux of a rod and thats how you set your gap.... Dont get frustrated it takes A LOT of hood time before you become one of the good hands on the pipeline... one avenue for you may be to start as a welders helper.. and hope you get a good welder who shares his knowledge and help you try to break out. You cant just jump on the pipeline and start welding pipe even if youre a natural and can weld out a 2ìnch with your eyes closed you need to be ticketed and have the proper credentials. Here on the pipeline you must be a journeyman (there is a little leeway to this rule but you gotta be damn good), and you absolutely MUST (no exceptions) be ticketed and carry a B-Pressure pipe ticket. The Leeway comes from before they wouldnt let you test for b-pressure unless you were a journeyman but now if youre a block 2 or 3 and have a employer sign off that you work on anything round... can even be hand rails or any of that bullshit.. They will give you a open root plate you have to put the root in vertical and hotpass and cap overhead.. If its good they`ll let you do the 6g pipe test but they are a lot more picky... root has to be perfect and cap has to be perfect so make sure u blend in any undercut or anything before you try and pass visual and then you will have to torch cut your pipe and have them bend the coupons. If it breaks your excluded from redoing the test until youre a journeyman.
I found the 4 position open root plate test harder than the pipe test. Theyre 4 different welds and all have to pass in order to move to pipe. Pipe is all one weld and its very similar, although pipe is chemically made up of a different composition you wont really notice it... You can get boiler plate but than youre going to run into it being expensive as well to be honest plain old mild steel plate is going to be harder so when you get to the boiler sch pipe or plate youll notice your puddle control is better because it takes the heat better. The main thing is controlling that keyhole in the root and feathering your starts and stops and have the backside of that root looking ace. the hot pass will push it in a little then stack your dimes on the cap to add to the aesthetics and bang your gold.
Very good video... my grand father is a retired boiler maker and pipe fitter... as for me i am a fitter welder/ general engineer i appreciate your videos they are very inciteful man... appreciative big time fan from new zealand keep pumping these videos out dude...

New to your channel. I learned today and been welding many year just not pipe. Stick and mig mostly just learning tig after welding the last almost 30 yrs now. so I am going to check it out now and see what videos jut got on tig. Thanks for the up load
I agree with most comments on here in which this guy has amazing energy and you can tell he loves what he does. You can also tell that the man knows what he's doing with his start stops but with all that being said, I'm surprised nobody else other than myself had noticed there was porosity in his root pass, his filler, as well as his cap had porosity. There was much more porosity in the filler pass and only noticed a few pinholes in the cap. This may be a project where porosity does not matter much but coming from a welder myself and in my opinion, it should not matter what you're doing, you should stick to shooting for no pin holes, cracks or contamination of any kind. With that being said again it still looked very good
Great video, I am just learning everything I can before I start my project on building a 27 foot steel sailboat... I am a just starting with welding and found your video helpful. I have a long way to go but since I will be building outside I think stick welding will be better than MIG..... but maybe a bigger learning curve for me
I miss those days of being a welders helper on pipelines. I got discouraged by my welding ability since the welder I was working with always said either you have it or you don't. Now I've been a dirty xray hand for the past 10 years and I always wonder if I could have been a welder if I stuck it out.
Very nice looking weld. Love your instructions and camera friendliness. I just bought me my first welder LE Mig 140. Watching welding videos to educate my self as much as possible b4 I start on my own and practice the art. Thank you
Good job, showing people what they want to see. I hope you do well with your channel. Reading some of the comments, seems the guys watching really appreciate you taking the time to show what you know. All the Best to you. Regards Peter.
Hey that means alot. And yes it's all for the people. I cant wait to show allll I got up my sleeve. Almost 17 years of experience and i myself am still learning.
I would imagine that the welding unit has steps of circa 50 amps, so for example the first clunk will be 50-100 2nd 100-150. Then the remote allows you to adjust within that range, for example, in the first clunk region (50-100) if you set the remote to 45, that would mean the total amps is 95. That's how my 1968 reyrolle welder works here in the UK 👍
great weld, I like how you go about getting the job done. hoping you could show in your next video the weld on the inside and I learn a lot, great job.

Great video brother I been a welder for 20 years I like the way you express yourself about welding nice job brother
You sir get a subscribe! I'm some one who's trying to learn the profession and stuff like this is golden!!!!
You are definitely good at what you love to do, great job, they are lucky to have you working for them
Thank you I just feel lucky to be working
Awesome video Wally! Thanks for sharing and great camera work Brent! Quick question: how do you know when to go up or down on temperature? Thanks again.
I will have to do a video and explain that . Thank you man stay cool
Watch your key hole your key hole will tell you everything bro
practice practice practice. Get comfortable and burn some rods. Watch your keyhole like the gentleman said. Play around with the heat on thinner material...and PRACTICE!! lol
Thanks gentlemen!
Great mention on positioning your body, most people don’t get that at all and they can’t lay a steady bead because of it. Being comfortable is key. Good video!
6011? are you building fence?
I thought he said 8010
He said 6010
The root would be 6010.
Awesome guide on how to do an position yourself, Great video keep up the great work.
Great video!! I was looking forward to seeing the welder and the settings you where running! Maybe you can post a video
Yes sir I am doing a separate video JUST FOR YOU
TheWeldProfessor Thx Bro!
KRoNiC SouLJaH thanks bro. Pipe is freaking expensive so I picked up some plate like you suggested. Will plate weld the same as the pipeline pipe?
Make more vids ! You’re a beast!
I am I am I got you
Thanks for doing these videos. I'm teaching myself to weld and every little thing helps.
Saludos amigos.k buen trabajo m gustaría saber zoldar como este camarada.👍👍👍👍buen trabajo amigo.
Your tips are really help me a lot,
I learn how to do welding from you,
Keep growing and Good Luck.
Thank you
I really would like to see how clamps work like the one in this video and the other type of clamps
Great Video, clear, precise and didn't waste my time.!! Two thumbs UP !
No,you're not a bad ass welder,you're a god
Bns me gusta su enseñanza y metodo de aplicacion e aprendido poco pero hay la llevo pregunta me gusta la forma de su careta protectora para soldar donde podre conseguir una gracias por sus enseñanzas
I see down hill all the way , when did you go uphill, wtf I’m lost, never mind . Good job
You Da' MAN!! Missed your calling, should be teaching classes for kids who wanna' learn trades. You got a unique skill, thank you for sharing the knowledge.
Sure would be fun but I enjoy what I do
This is the best welding ever
I know nothing about welding but this is really fun to watch!!!
Your welds are seriously clean and smooth.
I would love to apprentice under dude like that. Swallow ma pride for first year or so then start turning things out and learning.
That is what it's all about. My helper now was a structure welder but came to help me and practice pipe. A year later he is ready
OMG! You're not the best?! The best then would have-ta be a robot. I'm not a welder, but you sure make it look easy. Guess you've been practicing a while. Very nice. Thanks for sharing your passion, and you're camera man knew what he wuz doing to. Good job guys.
Over 1 million views!! Damn Wally your makin moves bro!
New to your channel. I learned today and been welding many year just not pipe. Stick and mig mostly just learning tig after welding the last almost 30 yrs now. so I am going to check it out now and see what videos jut got on tig. Thanks for the up load
What about those settings Wally? Great video
I wanted to do a separate video for you guys.
Yeah, yeah, the equipment! What are the settings?
With that being said again it still looked very good
That's a fine weld stacking the dimes.
Thank you for the video, great weld. haven't done any pipe welding but you sure make it look easy. Keep up the great videos.
Anytime man
On your pancake hood is it ANSI or old style shield? I don't know which one I should get for farm use.
good job,, so many company hire cause youre very fast worker and im sure your will be assign piping line of toilet
Great video, I am just learning everything I can before I start my project on building a 27 foot steel sailboat... I am a just starting with welding and found your video helpful. I have a long way to go but since I will be building outside I think stick welding will be better than MIG..... but maybe a bigger learning curve for me
It's worth learning I'd advise it
I miss those days of being a welders helper on pipelines. I got discouraged by my welding ability since the welder I was working with always said either you have it or you don't. Now I've been a dirty xray hand for the past 10 years and I always wonder if I could have been a welder if I stuck it out.
Logan Bourgeois it’s never too late brother!!! As anything it takes time and practice to master it!!! Pick up a welder and practice
If I can do it anyone can do it. I'm a high school drop out that bought a machine and practiced in my garage. Hard work always pays off.
What's an xray hand?
Pretty sure they're the guys who help X-ray the welds to check for quality.
Chase your dreams bro, always strive for what you want to do instead of not enjoying where you are in life
Solid job 👌. Your passion shows in your ability to not only teach but to execute.
Vertical down? Only with 6010.on 5xl water lines. On schedule pipe vertical up only
8010 is a downhill rod. Pipeliners rod
Yes down hand on pipe. Pipeliners use 6010 down all the way
Yes 6010 only.
@@eyalalmog2491 no not only 6010, 8010 and quite a few other's.
I used to work on petroleum and chemicals and only tig and 7018or higher. 6010 was on water lines
Very nice looking weld. Love your instructions and camera friendliness. I just bought me my first welder LE Mig 140. Watching welding videos to educate my self as much as possible b4 I start on my own and practice the art. Thank you
How do you do your whipping and pausing so easily are you just used to wiggling your wrist like that, amazing welds comes out great every time

I don't know anything but why such low amperage?
I would imagine that the welding unit has steps of circa 50 amps, so for example the first clunk will be 50-100 2nd 100-150. Then the remote allows you to adjust within that range, for example, in the first clunk region (50-100) if you set the remote to 45, that would mean the total amps is 95. That's how my 1968 reyrolle welder works here in the UK 👍
My machine is set at 200
@@TheWeldProfessor that makes much more sense. Thank you!
great weld, I like how you go about getting the job done. hoping you could show in your next video the weld on the inside and I learn a lot, great job.
