  • Here I go over a in position weld out in the feild. I had to make these welds in the hot 98° weather in the wind. Real life experiences in the oil feild. No sugar coat no fake all real and truth actual factual advice methods and technique. I am held to a high standard and need to be able to pass. I am no better then anyone and I am not the best welder. I am using my 200D pipeliner welding machine in this video outta my king ranch single axel tub rig. The other truck of mine had got some work on it. Decking it out finally. Been really busy lately and got alot going on for me. I take my life one day at a time. You could be in my position some day so dont give up. Remember dreams are free so act on them and never let them die. Give it all Ya got never let up. Please share the videos with all your friends and family. Spread the word. Most of all stay cool.

I'm retire rig welder 32 years 19-1/2 years chevron bay area.10 years Valero. I was really impressed with your great personality and journeyman skill.I did enjoy my classic two after my redface 200. Man you bring me back to the day I layed in bellholes grumbling at backhoe for a deeper hole.Ran down hand 5-p for PGE until I went to rifinerys all up hill. I was a welder at Chevron Oil on 5000 lb hydrogen pipeing 16 inch od 12 inch bore 1-1/4 chrome three days to finish one weld after three shots with cobal .And a lot a of carbon steel pipeing. My impression is you are the man great manners under pressure not just talk but a beautiful weld by no means no accident.I'm 75 now and still cherish the day I was running my own rig and loved it. The diference between a newborn baby and a rig welder is sooner or later the baby will stop crying.Keep up the good work young man. You should start your own school you do have what that requires. Greetings from the Napa Valley Thanks Jerry B

To perform an art without anyone to appreciate it is wasteful. To have the talent to perform on camera for all to see is respectable. To have the humility to own your mistakes is honorable. To share your gift with the world is awesome. Thanks for your videos. I thoroughly enjoy watching someone of your caliber at work.

Hello my brother, I’m an old pipeliner from way back. I was very fortunate to attend pipeline school through the Southern Union gas company back in the day. I was a CR foreman field certified under API level. 04 my specialty was tap out and down in the ditch like we all get down there Trying to make a certified weld all the time you’re pretty bad ass. You’re a damn good welder and a good teacher. My name is Thomas I live in Santa Fe New Mexico, and I’m a retired rig Welder I greatly appreciate your videos makes me laugh to know that young people like you are stillgetting it down keep up the good work brother and may the Lord bless you be safe thank you

Greetings from the Napa Valley. The fact is field welding separates the scrap iron welders from the real deal. When I was your age I was bullet proof, could lift anything, climb anywhere, and above all would love every weld. I went even so far as wdo40 on my weld when the rains came in just to show off my caps. I would ring them a buff the crap out of them. I was impressed with your confidence on your bottom tie-ins no porosity that's class bro. Love your spin out wheel. Would love to see a video on your rig, how you made it. I built a few and always wanted to change things around. Made my reels from you guessed it orj rings. My lead pockets were on the very back of the bed with screens on the bottom so I could wash off the mud if needed. Enough of my crap just keep up the good work. Keep those ear plugs in, wear your glassed and try to keep out of the smoke. I know I;m crazy I liked the smell of 5p.Jerry B

Grinding a root pass down with a burr bit?? Now THAT is a splendid idea i never even thought of. Spot on!!
After passing it no probs at last workplace, dipped a fleet 5p+ root 6013 hotpass, fill and cap ASME 9 6g test on 6" sched 120 a few months ago due to a line on the xray along the side of the root where i didnt grind it out very well. We always use a 5/32 thick disk on a 4.5" grinder for backgrinding a root and taking out the wagon tracks..... now using a carbide burr would give a lovely profile for the hotpass. Thanks Wally! Going to give that idea a try next time to see how it goes👍👍

That's a great real world weld out in the field in the wind and all with LH rods. Must be some serious pressures in those pipes. Good to see your helper Brett listening and being nice & quick on the dial and keeping his back turned to prevent getting an arc flash. Would be good to see a follow up on the x-ray and a shot of the film if possible.

I have a copy of (welders offshore guide), that's sold on EBAY, and in one part of it, it tells how a number of welders learn and get certified without ever having to go to an expensive welding school. So many young men want to be welders but some are already married and cannot afford to take a year out of their life and go back to vocational training school. Ingalls in pascagoula, ms. Has 3 year pipe welding apprentice programs where they pay $17.50 per hr. Just to train you, drawback is passing a drug test and no criminal background which most welders have issues with both. That's why I like the welders offshore guide because it overcomes all those issues with the knowledge it provides on learning and getting certified, without having to go through long awaited union programs, some welders follow its advice and get certified in a few weeks. I wish it had been published back in the 70's when I started welding.

They just need to love what they do and feel blessed

    • @gregorytimmons4777

Learn blue print reading well. Learn to weld a bit on the hot side. ASAP stop looking directly into the puddle and look just ahead. Once you know you are hot enough so the weld flows well and flattens out then look just ahead of the puddle and see exactly where you are welding always.

I actually used to be a pipeline coating/utility inspector and when you made the remark at the end about putting the flange info up on top for the inspectors that will be coming behind you, that earned a subscribe. Everyone likes to crack jokes about inspection - a lot of times it’s justified 😂 - nonetheless, that remark said a lot about you as a person and I can’t wait to watch more of your channel.

I started out at Lincoln Electric in Cleveland, 2 months of 12 hour days learning to burn rods, burn them n a circle and TIG weld,, came back to TN started as a welders helper, moved into fitting and eventually welding pipe full time, did that for 9 years until my eyes got bad and then moved into Project Estimating (desk job...hehe), somedays I really miss being in the field welding and cutting up with the guys, it really is nice when you have a great fitter who doesn't mind staying right there with you and helping out, makes the day go a lot better. Nice welding, it's great that you are explaining the tricks of the trades, hopefully some of the younger guys are watching and learning...the only way to be a better welder is burning rods under that hood, practice all you can.

Cool video and kudos for your skills. Got my start on pipe at a Navy Shipyard in the mid 70s and they insisted on grinding every start on SMAW, so that habit stuck with me even now in Aerospace Welding where we sometimes do Stick with 120-18 (4130) up to 140-18 for HY130 Alloys. Mostly Electron Beam now and the rest GTAW on crazy stuff in glove box. Titanium Tantalum and a bunch of other Refractory Metals even Tungsten containers for some propulsion projects but that's all EB Welding. I'll be watching more.

I always preferred to run a down hand bead with 6010 or 7010.....on normal mild steel pipe.....Run the gap tight.......even no gap actually and crank up the heat to penetrate through or use the grinder to feather the land if the gap closes up too tight and get used to running the rod hot, as compared .....With down hand and done that way there is no internal undercut and a smaller more uniform bead inside the pipe and better ties ins ..........When welding up hand and with 6010 or 7010 there is more chance of undercut on the bead especially around the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions ..... With a 7018 low Hydrogen rod used as a root pass rod and performed up hand, you are almost asking for trouble with undercut and inconsistencies at the stop /start points and or slag trapped in the bead having to run the rod at lower temperature to control and manipulate the arc flow as the molten metal does not freeze as fast while you can not step the arc well, if need be while trying to carry a larger weld puddle and larger keyhole .......Of course if that is the welding code and welding procedure, then a good welder will figure it out ...but still, more challenging and difficult to obtain a nice uniform root pass bead.......If the code and the procedure calls for a *Up Hand* 6010 or 7010 root pass, I found it best to perform the root pass same as down hand.......run a tight gap..... and jam the rod in there with sufficient heat and drag the rod up maintaining a tight key hole and get used to your hand and arm position coming up and around while avoiding too much of a back angle on the rod and arc......Also you can hear the sound of the arc inside the pipe and know that the metal deposit is flowing smoothly by the sound.......a nice consistent, smooth *hissing sound* rather than a inconsistent crackling sound.........such that you could close your eyes and work the rod by way of the sound you are hearing ..........I also learned to perform the cap pass Down Hand with 7018 low hydrogen....It works, while you have to crank up the heat and pull a longer arc when nearing the side of the pipe and let the flux roll off as you near the 3 clock position ...or..... stop running the bead and restart with a new rod pointed upwards at a steep back angle and crank up the heat even more on the dial for the start of the arc while the *force* of the arc and the steep rod angle will get you past the 3 o'clock position before the molten flux begins to roll around in front of the arc impeding the flow of metal deposit....and moving on to the 4 o'clock position where the molten flux is now rolling off vertically and dropping off and not interfering with the arc gap and metal deposit action....... and then have the welders helper lower the heat as need be as you get closer to the 5 o'clock position and finally the 6 clock position at the bottom......People look at the cap pass and wonder how did you get the cap pass looking so smooth....Ha Ha ...but does not work well if you have to weave and carry a really big weld puddle on larger diameter, thicker wall pipe.....Whenever you are welding pipe and the pipe is not being X-Rayed to code or say 10 percent X-Ray requirements and say only water pipe or drain pipes etc. ......then try welding different ways ..such as 5 / 32 inch size rod as a root pass rod for pipe that is say 4 inches and up and even 3 /16 inch size welding rod for root pass for large pipe diameters and heavier wall thickness that can take the heat .....and always experiment when you can ....Cheers

@@hasslefree1848 I fuckin loved reading that! This dude is definitely a good welder, no doubt. But compared to what we do in Canada, he makes welding pipe looking hard. Tack with 7018, burn through them with a 6010 root, hot pass with 6010 or 7010, fill with 7018, and cap with 7018.

Nice touch putting the stamping up top. I'm a 510 not a CWI but it'll be very handy down the road.

In Australia we would do TIG root and hot pass, low hydrogen fill and cap. We used to use kobies (low hy) root but now TIG root is very popular. Also STT wire process has taken over in fab shops. Interesting to see how you do it in America. 👍

Iv never done a low hyd. Root, always 5p downhill. At 55 I’m taking bilberry every day , thinking about rigging up and getting into it again.

I'm not a welder, dont plan to be one but your attitude and narration are very enjoyable to watch. I work with pipe welders, we dont have the time to chat about how its done. especially cool to see this heavy of flanges being fitted and welded in the field. Thanks for the content. I'm subscribed

That was some root you had to put it there brother ! I could tell by the cooling weave you had to use !!! Old timer welder, Served my apprenticeship starting 1967 UK. By the way those Caiman gloves must be pretty good, ! Being able to keep the heat away from you when laying on the flange that's been preheated too 400, then a root, a fill, n then a cap. All that seriously raises the temperature some. !
