People watch this video and think this is easy I'm a 40 year welding veteran retired I know exactly how hard it is. Welding on prototype oil Derricks, silicone reactors and even got my feet wet in nuclear pressure vessels. The welders of this nation built this country literally. It's good to see there's some things you just can't teach a robot. This type of work is no different than any other you have to love it to do it well and find joy in a job well done. It was definitely a love-hate relationship more hate Than Love LOL but your video reminded me of how much I don't miss the struggles but would do it again for the fellowship of my coworkers and their stories of Triumph over the Quest for Fire.
Wally I am closing in on 40 years of welding I spent my time welding pipe not my favorite line of work but it was a great learning experience the one thing that was taught to me way back when was that to make a good weld you needed to be comfortable and as you know you cannot always be in a comfortable position sometimes your surroundings make it impossible keep up the good work looking forward to seeing more
I love how you explain posture and how it can work for you! People will never know how many tips you give that can help them! Keep going professor! Its not all about wire feed or static projects.
Nice job, enjoyed the video. Keep making more, I've been welding 43 years now and always enjoy seeing you young guys just kicking ass and putting down nice welds.
Guys like you are good for welding. As a CWI; I appreciate you putting this out there with such class and humility. So true about that slag coming off and getting you. Hearing/feeling 7018 slag burn thru ear wax is such a fun time. Haha

I have done many of these taps and one thing we did most of the time was to UT the weld area to have active flow through the line while welding. Good job here on this 👍

As a old retired guy that welded for a few years as a pipe fitter back in the late 1960’s. Most of my experience was with steam piping. We used a lot of E6011 low pressure. I did a lot of tank farm work getting them ready for new kind of gas. These were Shell farms and pumping stations. All I knew was that it was called Shell of the Future on the drawings. Most were in evacuated lines. We had to weld uphill on everything a lot of flanges as many valves had to be upgraded. Then vapor recovery came right after the “gas of the future”. Funny all the pipe line guys welded down hill we couldn’t hire them. I’m looking at a scar on my ankle from a hunk of that ugly 7018 slag that somehow went down my boot (no spats) 70 years old and that still gives me the chills today as I think about. Didn’t hurt long but it did hurt like heck for a bit. I was a kid and the Forman my helper were laughing like hell as I started jumping around. Just had to pull that hunk of slag out it was deep because my boot pushed it into my inside left ankle 50 years later still have that scar. Anyway great video. Never used a split tee very nice item. Start cutting a tee in on a hot day those lines would get hot in the sun and grow so much the tee wouldn’t fit your cut out. Hose the line down with a fire hose so you could fit it up. Sorry so long I’m old.
Bad looking welding is a bad weld.you did a great job,the supporters attests to yer commitment to quality.well done.most welders don't care about whether a flange stays square down the road.they're welding it up and move on.
It's hard work with a lot of skill involved but just like in many other professions some welders are underpaid while others are very well paid. It all depends on which part of the country you live in, there are different demands and costs of living that dictate the pay.
So many industries served and , most money for me is in custom aluminum and stainless sheet metal fabrication. First job was ironworking and it paid me well. Nothing pays better than selling your own work though.

I welded for 18 yrs Until 2012 when my dads Brother passed away from brain cancer then I started Farming full time . I always kicked myself in the ass for not going into the Pipe game ... Your a hell of a welder man .
Things have changed so much. When I was welding in the early 90’s , I capped with 1/8 using a horizontal figure 8! Leaving a flat cap with 1/16 over the pipe.
When I was a structural welder we would weld shoes on some larger pipe and it’s similar to that except they were just shoes on spool pieces but awesome video now I’m a rig welder and just from your video I believe I can do it I hadn’t ever seen that before I’ve seen the fitting and heard of hot taps awesome
Very nice work..... Have supervised that kind of activitie many times in live lines only difference is that on the circunferential joint you do not want to go uphill cause It induces too mutch localized heat youd rather train your welder to do It downhill
Not a welder here - So if you need a backing strip to be safe about blowing thru the pipe to join the two halves, how can you go after the ends so aggressively and not have problems? Great looking work btw. You sure can see the pitting in the pipe on some of those close ups. Thx!

We used to let the backing strips stick out a litle longer, and weld over it so you build op on the strips and keep the round weld kleen, after the complete welding we grind them ends off.
So Ive a little time in, I don't pipeline. I all three mig, tig and stick... why can't I burn out the slag when I start? I see yours guys strike and drag in to your restarts, but when I do that I always trap slag. What can I do differently? Thanks man keep on teaching us
