We had an awesome day filming with one of Golf Digest's Best Young Teachers, Andy Patnou at Starfire Golf Club in Scottsdale, AZ. Check out Andy and his teaching at www.andypatnou...
In this video Andy is teaching us two drills that I first saw him do on Instagram and that you can put together to develop some great feels. The first one is all about how the feet work and gripping the ground. The second drill is all about adding the energy in from the arms to the club.

For sure one of your better videos and no gimmicks! The best I have ever seen on how to grip the ground with my feet for more power and rotation. A classic lesson and must watch! Thank you..
Thanks, Harold! Andy is awesome....great coach! Loads of stuff that can help us all!
Great video Eric. These are some simple feels that can be incorporated right away. I know for me personally, concentrating on pressure movement solves a lot of problems and prevents getting too wrapped up in mechanical club position thoughts. Thanks as always.
Thanks, Dave! Happy to help pass along Andy to everyone!
Eric you rock man !
Thanks, man!
Just wanted to say that I went out today, in a secluded spot hiding from the Covid19 zombies, and really worked on the main points from this video - but specifically toeing the right (rear) foot out. I have to say, what you would think is a tiny little change, absolutely feels enormously powerful in the legs' ability on the first movements of the downswing to squat into the ground and grip it for more potential stored energy - it really blew me away. I've always known about, and used for extra power when needed, 'more' upper back extension, but adding this Toe-out Right Rear Foot, was a sort of mind blow because it allows the feet to grip into the ground with balance and not for the right heel to come up too soon losing its ability to push off for rotational power. I thought I knew all this stuff but this was a wow moment for me. I've just gone back and looked at Sam Snead's amazing swing, the swing that many modern coaches point to as the guy who perfected the squat into the ground, and sure enough he has a pretty significant flared out Right Toe.
Love it! Great message, Paul!
This is such a good, clear breakdown of using the ground which is hard to find elsewhere. Currently I struggle to do this on a full swing and always feel that to get to these feelings from the top is difficult however I can do this really well on half-shots/pitch shots. Any guidance on that would be gold for me. I like the shout out to Bradley Hughes too who uses a wooden board for this type of drill... man can that guy strike a ball solid!! Great video Eric. Thank you!
Thanks, Christian!
Of course PART of this starts with general learning principles. 1/2 swing is easier to learn first before full swing. Slow before fast. Letters before words. Walk before run, etc.
So that (to me) would be normal and expected that you would feel/struggle with that.
From there I (or a good coach) would really need to see you doing the motion and learn more about what you're doing before guessing at that what in particular is causing that.
Check out www.cogornogolf.com if you dont get it sorted so I can see your swing and learn more about you and your game and help guide!
Thanks Eric. Will check it out.
Like this one Eric. I also feel focusing on the heels thru to the finish helps with early extension too. Pretty hard to move forward into the ball while also keeping the weight more to your heels to dig. Keep em coming man.
Thanks, man!
100% on lead heel....pressure in feet and body motions often correlate 1-1 (as you know)

This drill is brilliant, I've only just started following your channel a day or 2 ago and your vids are top draw 👌🏻
Thanks, Ryan! Appreciate it my friend!
Very interesting about the toes... I got a pair of True’s Originals for Christmas and played 18 in them for the first time a little over a week ago, and my toes were killing me after the round. But I did play some of my best golf ever.
No pain no gain? :)
Really interesting & informative video. Losing my balance after contact happens to me far too much & the idea of flaring the feet out is appealing to keeping my balance. Going to practice this one for sure!
Thanks for being with us! Hope it helps!
Great Great, video. As you said it makes me aware of the feel of the positions I should be feeling in my swing but aren't. This is on to really work on.
Thanks, Joseph! Really good stuff from Andy! Happy to help pass it along :)
Eric fabulous video..you can see the leg knee does alot of work during the down swing..Really do more work with this guy..thanks
Thank you sir! Definitely does.....hope to do more with Andy in the future....he is great!
Got something to work on in the house for the next month since here we are all on lock down even all the courses are closed
This is brilliant. Just spent 20 minutes in the backyard and it felt so powerful. I can't wait to put this to use but in the meantime we're reduced to air golf!
Love it, gentlemen!
Hope it helps keep you all safe, busy and sane :)
Not all courses are closed.
@@stevenrushing334 I live in Philippines all golf courses is closed on full knockdown if you don't have a special pass you can't go out
Brian Rizza sorry to hear. Hopefully it won’t be long. I’m in California, the courses here have styrofoam in the cups, nobody touches the flag, the ball washers are
covered in plastic, and they disinfect every cart. They do allow individual carts if requested. Good luck with your new swing.
HI Eric, thanks for commenting previously. First drill is similar to down under board. I feel like when I grip with my right (I’m right handed) foot/leg in backswing it actually restricts my backswing turn/depth. Any comment/thoughts on that? Thanks.
I would flare right foot, straighten right leg and let right hip up and back.
If this is restrictive you may be going too far on outside of right heel (of course thats just a guess without seeing)
Hope that helps
Great stuff gents!
Stay tuned...you're up later this week (and I still owe you videos in Dropbox!)
Thanks, man! You guys are both awesome....lots of stuff that will really help people!
Eric Cogorno Golf stay safe in these crazy times!
Another great video!!
Thank you sir!
I like Andy's style and instruction. Thanks for sharing!
Me too...he's great! Our pleasure!
gr8 drills. i think it may be good to try the left hand for the "bag" drill as well. what do you think?
Yup you can do that as well!
I always get something important from the 'Andy' videos. In the past, I have tried the lower body right leg/knee counter rotation stuff at the top and into transition but I always found myself struggling to get a full bswing turn because all the tension I built up wanted to get released back to the ball. In this video (starting around 12 mins in), Andy says that the arms need to feel 'weightless' and "take the tension out of your arms and put it into the legs"--just what I needed to hear! I can work on that in my basement until the Governor lets us get back on a golf course! Having trouble thinking about golf as "non-essential"--LOL
First about the video, it's a good one and Andy's move with the right arm like hitting a wall move is exactly like I saw on a video from Johnny Miller from the mid '90's, same exact move.
I'm here in Calif..Gov Newsom didn't say anything about not golfing. It's not an essential 'obviously'. I looked up the 'stay in shelter rules', all I've seen is that they discourage going out except if you need to go to the store, gas, even drive-thru food is o.k., ect.. What I basically got from it is..IF you want to go out for 'other than' essentials, like exercise, golfing, fishing, walking/jogging, walking the dog, outdoor activites, it's allowed..Just stay 6-10 feet away from others, wash your hands and face alot. Some golf courses here are closed, some are still open. I went to the range yesterday and there was a lot of people there, but everybody 6-10 feet away and people on the course. I'm going again today on a nice sunny mid 60's day. When you're out, use gloves or something for doors handles/knobs and grocery cart handles. Stay safe and indoors if you want. Practice safe social rules. Hope they find a vaccine fast.
Love it, Dennis!
A LOT of little nuggets throughout the videos we did with Andy....we could have probably done 100 together :)
Hopefully more in the future!
Another excellent lesson. I know they aren't cheap but have you ever thought of incorporateing a good pressure mat such as Boditrak or Swing Catalyst? It's interesting to see something that you cannot feel sometimes.
Thanks, Tony!
I used to use a Boditrak! Great tool and I learned a lot during those times.
I found I would end up doing the same exact things I would do when I only use video...
Sometimes the MICRO stuff really helps....sometimes though you can get caught top in the micro and lose sight of the MACRO...
As with all tools....they are only as good as the person using them. I found the best results when I kept my focus on the video and the priorities I saw there.
Exellent video👍You have met so many coaches and thank you for sharing also those lessons. I have learn a lot! Tour players are athletics and use lot off body rotation but you also teach that "closed backswing coil" technicue. When you meet new student, how you choose how to teach. Offcource there are many things that effect, but is there any basic ideas how choose right technique?
Thanks, Jukka!
As you mention....A LOT of factors in terms of teaching someone.
I don't have any set steps.....do my best to understand the player, their goals, where they are at and identify the most important things to start with. We create a plan from there!
@@CogornoGolf Thank you. Understanding the player is probably the key.
absolutely.....I may say something COMPLETELY DIFFERENT to person 1 compared to person 2
Eric, since he mentions Bradley Hughes, how about contacting him and get him on your channel too? He's in South Carolina and works with Harold Varner III and Brendon Todd. His impact bag drills are excellent tools.
6string - Dave I used to get lessons from Bradley Hughes when he started out teaching. He knows his stuff 👍
Great idea, Dave!
I don't know Bradley...maybe we can link up in the future!
@@CogornoGolf That would be great! Golf can be difficult as you know. You're sharing your knowledge and featuring other instructors is a big help to us. Thanks!
Great tutorial again... one thing I am unsure with my swing is how to clear the left hip (i am right handed) to ensure straighter trajectory...if you can show drill/exercise on this, that would be much appreciated!!! thx
Hey James!
Thanks for the kind words! Andy is great!
Here is some videos/drills that should help with clearing the left hip:

Gold!!!!
Thank you!!
On the right foot, is the heel digging clockwise? On the left foot, is the heel digging counter clockwise?
During the downswing-yes.
You would want to feel toes moving in opposite directions
@@CogornoGolf - Thank you Eric. I think he's getting it. Videos so very helpful!! instagram.com/p/B-3OsLqlLcg/
Great!!!
Thank you :)
😊
seems like a 10 pound shoes would do a lot good in golf ;)
Could be on to something :)
Haha no it won’t;)
