This movie was a crazy ride and the visuals were incredible. Michael Mann really needed a partner to work on these types of films with him because there’s so much wonkiness going on that I suspect would have been worked out if he had more collaborators. The story and dialogue scene to scene doesn’t work very well, but the overall plot idea and the visuals in the moment are both good… It could have been a classic if there were more people to buffer and improve the final product IMHO.
I watched this on laser disc 15 plus years ago and can't remember much about it. After watching your review, I can't wait to get my copy and experience The Keep on 4K.
I rewatched that boat shot on the ocean with that amazing sunrise 3 times kept rewinding it. I loved seeing this in 4k. Such a great rewatch in 4k. I have more appreciation now for this now. Will be rewatching this a bunch.
The keep is a goofy fantasy movie, haven’t seen the new uncut version, but it has been on streaming for years (cut version). I recommend anyone watch this movie before buying this movie, it’s not for most.
I remember renting the VHS from Music plus and watching it with my dad. A lot probably went over my head as a kid. Would love to rewatch but it sold out. I am getting to the point with sone of these limited releases where I’m just going to collect them digitally when they go on sale for $5. Scalpers buying them up are making them to expensive. There’s no way this movie is even worth $50 just to get packaging and a disc.
@thelastmoviestanding might be a bootleg, couldn't find one on ebay. It has a different cover art then dvd and disc looks normal. But either way I don't mind bootleg for my collection but as a reseller I would never resell it just in case.
Man this video got me so hyped to watch this and I’m still waiting on my order from VS :( I checked out Manhunter and Thief a year or so ago and those are both great Michael Mann 80s films too.
I’m not sure the 3 hour version ever existed, the effects supervisor died at the start of post and Michael Mann supposedly got denied funding to do more shooting. So I’m not sure the director’s cut exists at all
The 3 hour plus version was Michael Mann's original concept for the film, but it couldn't be completed since visual effects supervisor Wally Veevers died 2 weeks into post production. Unfortunately, his ideas, working plan and the techniques to execute them, weren't documented for others to follow --Every detail was in Veevers' mind's eye and they died with him... After they cut off the production's funding, Paramount edited the long version to a 2 hour cut and test screened it, but it didn't test well with audiences and after the fact, they edited it again, down to the final cut of 96 minutes I saw in the theatre. Several years later, NBC broadcast the film on TV and it had an alternate, more upbeat ending.
This movie reminds me of Donnie Darko, in the sense that it's somehow related to horror, and definitely fits in a horror collection, but I wouldn't call it a true horror movie
They still have copies on Amazon I think. VS had more on their site before they shut down for the month, so I guess we’ll see if they made more when the site is back up. Imprint also announced a 4K release of the film in march I think.
@ thanks for info. It looks like there’s a standard version coming in January but preorder is $50. I don’t know man, that’s a lot for one movie. I may try to find a used copy at some point or hope they release the UHD on digital.
IMHO Mann's best movie is Manhunter (1986). Also based on the novel 'Red Dragon', totally different portrayal of Hannibal Lecter in it (Cox) and an incredibly moody soundtrack (songs instead of composed music). One of my favorite soundtracks ever; 2 tracks provided by Shriekback are really phenomenal. You should check it out!
@@ChrisCFilmNerd1979 thanks man! Yea legend is an all time great for me, & I love the tangerine dream score is amazing, but I really don’t think they mix hahaha to I watch the directors cut & listen to the soundtrack separately
Are you sure you don't get 4k movies sent to you for free from Vinegar Syndrome? Cause you just SOLD just about everybody who has watched your video. Lol!!
Good stuff man! I hadn't considered your thesis statement before, but you make a good argument. And thanks for the shout out!
Thanks! & absolutely!! Loved watches your video about to, very informative
Scott Glenn is Jodi Fosters boss in Silence of the lambs.
Ohhh yea!!! Damn it’s been awhile since I’ve seen that movie haha
Tangerine Dream is awesome! I used to listen to the ost's for Firestarter, Risky Business and Sorcerer on repeat while being at work

The ending traumatized me as a kid in the 80s. The music is unforgettable.
The music … 🤯🤯
The tangerine dream score was the single biggest selling point for me

It played on cable a lot in the 80s.

Great upload as always , always watch your content after I’ve finished editing.

Picked it up on blue ray at a pawn shop a month ago paid $20 just because I'd never find again
Wow nice! I didn’t know it had a Blu-ray

Omg you got the mega spega 4k version that's worth $6,000 on eBay!
Great points and I agree it's fantasy for sure. I love the silver crosses scene.
@@beyondz55 dude that silver cross scene 🤯🤯🤯
I’ve never seen the keep or even heard of it .
I dig it
Never seen it but intrigued
The keep is a trip. Great review. 😊
We can’t even buy that version you show. I think the $50 Amazon pre-order is just a slipcover version. On eBay, that box set is going for over $100…
