Former English teacher here. One unit in Middle School was supposed to be about families, but I always modified it with different readings and examples to start discussion about the definition of family. Some of my students didn't live with their birth families, but rather with family of choice or other relatives, due to issues at home. Eventually we got to the conclusion that family is what you make of it, so family trees were just an optional background assignment to help organize and explain stories passed down as oral tradition- other options were available for that grade. Only seems fair to include everyone. 🤷

As someone who works with antique swords and daggers on occasion (I work at an auction house), the sound of a sword hissing out of a sheathe comes from a sort of locking mechanism in the opening of the sheathe. Sometimes you really have to push them in towards the hilt and they click in place. It's probably there to stop the blade from falling out. It's not a thing on all of them, but they do make that sound if you draw them fast

And I had some other thoughts.
Getting married to someone of way way higher standing (recall she was fairly rich before the step family walked in) basically "forced" Cinderella to move in with him because a lot of the time, a guy's wife will move in with him.
The exception would be if Cinderella were richer then him, then they probably would've moved into her family house (with the evil step family) unless someone between Cinderella's family or her husband's puts in the money to buy or build a new house.
Or if Cinderella and her fiance were willing/convinced to start from scratch.

    • @LilKitLen
      @LilKitLen ปีที่แล้ว +47

@@16poetisaIt can happen without uterus didelphys! Our model of "you ovulate one egg once per month/cycle" is.... not entirely accurate, and pregnancy doesn't always send the message to not release the next egg. It is incredibly rare because you need a situation in which the first pregnancy did not stop the next ovulation from happening, and the chance increases if you are a "multiple ovulator" (more than one at a time or more than one per cycle), but it has occurred.
Oh yeah edit to add: Multiple ovulation is how fraternal (non identical) twins occur, when two eggs are released at once (at the same time), so it's not that uncommon that one egg once per cycle isn't accurate.

He tried to explain that he didn't know what his father looked like because he'd never met him a bunch of different ways. After a particularly mean reply from the teacher telling him to just ask his mom, he shouted "I CAN'T!!! SHE DOESN'T KNOW EITHER!!!!!". Yeah, I didn't make the connection about what that probably meant till adulthood, my kid brain just assumed she was blind or something. I might have had 1 grandparent alive when I left hs, but I wasn't in contact with her, if she was alive at that point. All the rest had died years before. Hell, my maternal grandfather died when my mother was only 3 months old herself. And that's not talking about all the people who don't have contact with family for whatever reason.

Fun Fact: The "giant cucumber" in that photo is actually an under ripe watermelon. That's what watermelons look like on the inside when you pick them before they're fully ripened. The flesh gradually turns redder starting from the center and moving outwards. If you look at the size of the gourd as the father is carrying it, it's somewhat small compared to a store bought watermelon, because it was not allowed to mature. It can be quite hard to tell when exactly a watermelon is ripe if you've never grown them before, and this process can take a long time, so you need to have enough weeks in your growing season. A watermelon is ripe when it develops a yellow patch on its underside, and the nearby tendrils on the vine start to wilt.
Watermelons and cucumbers are both part of the Cucurbitaceae family though, and the rind of a watermelon is edible and can be used the same exact way as cucumbers. You can make pickles out of them, which are pretty good.

I have a great story about the asking about family in school. I have two moms, so I grew up having to explain to everyone, both kids and adults, how I existed (cause I’m a donor child). So in 2nd grade, on Father’s Day, we had a substitute teacher, and she said we would draw our dads. This story will appear to be very random at first but bear with me:
I'm a pregnant lady. Recently, an OBGYN tried to use a speculum to look inside of my vagina, and it wasn't the right size. This is how I learned that they are actually different size of speculums, and when I said "... They are different sizes of these?! Huh, that makes sense when you think about it, I didn't know that!" she explained to me that yes, they were different sizes, because some women are naturally smaller, bigger, have had children or (this is the part related to the video) that some pregnant women that come for a check up are even virgins, physically speaking, because they're lesbians who have been artificially inseminated with a device that's far smaller than a penis. So, depending on your definition of virginity, IT IS possible to be a mom who's a virgin. For example: if you're asexual and have been artificially inseminated. The more you know!

At the start of every year we had to do a presentation about our summer vacation and I've never ever been able to get a passing grade for this.
Why you ask? Well because we were pretty poor and couldn't really afford to do anything special.
So I had to start every year with a presentation that went like "I spent my vacation at home. we played a lot of board games. that's it".
Afterwards a lot of teachers asked questions like "Didn't you go to another country?" no. "Surely you atleast went to a theme park or something?" no sir. "There has to be one special thing you did." yes, the board games.
A couple of teachers even accused me of lying because "Everyone does atleast one special thing during vacation time"

God. It’s the fucking worst when you’re given a writing assignment with the strong hinting that it should be pretty personal. Nothing said about reading it out loud when the assignment is given out. Then the day comes that the assignment is due, and teacher asks who wants to start reading theirs first. It’s like- if you would just TELL ME beforehand that we were gonna have to read it out loud, I would have written about something less deeply personal! It’s one thing handing in a writing assignment to your teacher where they’ll be the only one to read it, and unless it’s concerning, never talk about it. It’s a whole other thing to literally read out your most deep, personal, thoughts and experiences to your class, when most of them are barely acquaintances at best, and some may even use it against you. Absolutely terrible! Any time the teacher gave us the option if we wanted to read it out loud or not, I turned it down. All writing is personal and I don’t need to be judged by other immature mean teenagers. Thank god I’m not in high school anymore

3:50 Same, we started studying Holocaust literature in 7th grade and it was so upsetting to me that I honestly zoned out for a lot of it. Then a test got passed out to see if we had been paying attention, and there was an essay question asking to write what conditions were like in the camps or something really intense for 12-year-olds to be describing in detail. I just wrote, "I can't do this. It's too painful," which should have been the teacher's queue that MAYBE this subject was a little too much for this class, but instead they just took point off and made a note that this wasn't an acceptable way to answer an essay question. I always felt conflicted because, you know, was I just making excuses? Was I being lazy? Was I being a big baby? Was I using the pain of other people as a clever way to weasel out of taking a 7th grade test? Several years later, I found out that my great-great grandmother was a Russian Jew who fled the pogroms, so maybe that's why studying Holocaust material has always made me feel like my body is full of angry bees. :/

Teachers were usually mildly confused when the nice clean “pyramid” they expected us to draw had a weird bulge at the parent level and then got mostly cut off because I never knew much about their family histories past their parents. The only time this was a problem was when one teacher tried to tell me to redo the assignment because I only had one “real” sister.

In this movie the Duke is going all over the entire country (not Prince he is the royalty duh) and his job is basically to bring all the girls that can fit the shoe. And Prince then WILL recognize Cindirella because he remembers her goddamn face.

  • @Sulferlines

The Mulan one was not a good example because she nearly got executed the second they found out she's not a man, that's because at the era where that story takes place it was bad luck and illegal to have a woman soldier so from their perspective she's literally sabotaging their chance of winning by angering the spirits.
Edit: C'mon guys, if you're gonna make an argument against me at least make it make sense or worthwhile, please?
Don't say "It's a fictional movie so there's no reason to care about the laws/beliefs" because the entire reason Hugo the dragon is there is because he's supposed to keep her identity a secret BECAUSE they would kill her, they straight up were about to kill her right after she seemingly ended the war and killed Kan (as far as they could tell).
And don't say "You just don't understand jokes/parody" because a parody or joke trying to laugh at the absurdity of something can only be funny if the joke actually makes sense in the given context, saying "They won't care she's a girl because the dragon is a bigger deal" is not a good argument when they literally established at the start that they will kill her on the spot if she got caught and when she did she was actually about to be killed, and its something that took inspiration from REAL LIFE.
Make good arguments... Please, it's getting annoying...

Mulan is a price of fiction loosely based on a piece of fiction. While there were certainly periods of Chinese history where that was true, “The Ballad of Mulan” (upon which Mulan is based) existed to make the point that duty to one’s country was more important than gender or sex. Even if that weren’t the case, Mulan the Disney movie is Chinese flavoured American fiction. There is no “era” with actual laws or people with real beliefs that have to be represented for historical accuracy.

Because that's literally the first thing that went into play the second she got caught. The guy was about to kill her in the snow right there right after she saved them all and had to recover from injury and you say there's no "Era, Laws, or Beliefs" that should be accounted for?!

@@vaughnhaney7020 Sorry, had a brain glitch. For some reason, I went through this whole thing thinking the phrasing was "the bees and the flowers," which would make sense since bees are an active part of the pollination process. Birds and the flowers can work the same way if we're talking specifically about pollinator birds.
... of course, now that I've looked up bird pollination and realize it's not just the one-off of hummingbirds, I'd continue to argue that "birds and the flowers" still makes sense. Instead of talking about producing seeds or laying eggs (something common to a much larger swath of life on earth than birds, bees, and flowers), we'd be referring to the process of fertilization itself, because birds do, more often than we talk about, play an active role in plant procreation.
All that said, I haven't looked into the rationale behind either phrase. There's likely a historical freezing of the phrasemes after a bunch of semantic change, as is so often the case. It's just as likely both come from some metaphor that made more sense hundreds of years ago.

That doesn't mean that birds and flowers makes NO sense haha
