    • @MurdocsMinion
      @MurdocsMinion ปีที่แล้ว +31

      @@GrifoStelle Depends on the store, and how well staffed they are. Walmart, and other big-chain grocery stores, for instance, don't even have them anymore, because they'll let it go until you've stolen enough to press charges (about $200 to $1000 worth, depending on the manager and state). Most cashiers won't catch you on smaller stolen items, unless loss prevention or a manager are watching them. Smaller mall stores will stop you every time, and anywhere with a register close to the door, or a wandering security guard. The security guard/loss prevention specialist will usually be plain-clothes, and you can recognise them if you're a regular enough customer--but that also means that they can recognize you.
      Those scanners work via a small magnetic sticker, hidden somewhere on or in the item. Most commonly, you'll find it inside of books, pinned on the inside of clothing/shoes, or in rare instances, incorporated into the packaging. The scanner temporarily demagnetizes them, which allows you to go through.
      Theoretically, the easiest way to get away with stealing something in a situation like that, is to also buy something else so you can conceal the item in the same bag, and stick one of the alarm tags to your shoe. Make sure the tag is on it before you come in, so you ring the alarm on the way in as well. When it goes off, they'll already expect it, so you'll usually be waved on. But if they ask you to stop, a quick look over yourself before "realizing" there's something stuck to your shoe would probably do the trick.
      Also, never steal from independent stores or small businesses, as they are job providers, and keep the money circulating in the local economy,
      Not that I am actually condoning theft in any way shape or form. : ]

    The hat man is actually a really common hallucination. It's a variant of the shadow people that people sometimes see during sleep paralysis or with sleep depravation. Seeing shadow people this way is an event that's experienced by people all over the world and across cultures.

    • @mailcs06
      @mailcs06 ปีที่แล้ว +139

      Remember: just because seeing shadow people happens to people across the world and across cultures does not necessarily mean they’re supernatural. I had enough trouble trying to craft a society based on side-blotched lizards. Basically I decided that the families shoved kids out onto the streets around the time the next clutch came (maybe ten years old), and it was considered a normal rite of passage to spend time on your own until you hit breeding age, possibly found one or more mates, and settled down as a new family.
      (The guys who don't find mates, or who get their mates stolen during the breeding event, become the lowest caste in society and get the crappy jobs. It's polygynous so the women don't face the same issues.)
      Anyway most lizard people don't bond with their own siblings and only the youngest gets any parental involvement over the long term. And society is slowly adjusting to the fact that one particular phenotype of guys is predisposed to monogamy -- like what even is this weird stuff, sticking to a single mate and actually caring for her emotional state and bonding with your children I mean what kind of weirdos *are* these guys anyway.
      It was really fun to write 😸

      That makes sense, kinda like how Baz Luhrmann tries to add modern music or modern culture into classic stories to make people associate it with present day and bond with it rather than seeing it as some distant "story" by old people not relatable to today (at least that's my assumption of why he does it) like he did with The Great Gatsby music etc.
      I think his modern language and modern comedy in A Knight's Tale may have actually inspired that usage in movies like Pirates of the Carribean.

    The adult spouse thing could actually be a thing in some countries.
    In the US three 10 year old girls were married to men who at the time were 24, 25 and 31 years old respectively. This happened in 2001 in Tennessee.
    A research done in 2018 showed that the average rate of child marriage in the US is about 0.6% meaning 6 out 1000. The majority of them are 16 and 17 year olds.
    There is a very large problem about this because they may not be deemed old enough to file for divorce, so they are effectively trapped in the marriage.

At first we just thought it was stuff she picked up from her teenage brother, but it seemed off. My sister took her to the doctor just to make sure and when she came home she seemed like she was frustrated but also confused and shocked, since none of us had even heard of this being a thing. Personally, i couldn't even wrap my head around this when she said my niece was going through puberty because, well, she's freaking 8. But, we at least understand her behavior now. It's probably buried in the comments already, but "adult spouse" signage has made the rounds on this subreddit before with a simple explanation. This is usually seen in places that serve alcohol, so "minor" includes legal adults who aren't yet at the drinking age, like say, a 20 y/o and their 21 y/o spouse, here in America

    • @Just_Reading_Comments
      @Just_Reading_Comments 9 หลายเดือนก่อน +7

      That doesn’t make sense. A 20 year old would not be a “minor”, they are an adult even though they aren’t of legal drinking age in the US. A minor is anyone under 18 years old. Also 5 States still do not have a minimum age for marriage, meaning a child of any age can legally get married, while many other States have minimum ages ranging from 15 years old and up. Only 10 States have banned child marriage.

      I've heard that theory, too, and it makes the movie so much better. Especially the part where Rose jumps back onboard. According to the theory she wants to persuade Jack to reveal she's actually a woman (or has a female body with the transman version) so he/she will also be allowed on the rescue boats

    I guess one way to "discretely" get through the beeper is you get your shoplifting done, conceal it discretely, and THEN come out of the aisle, put on a big dramatic song and dance routine for the people in the shop and then exit stage left. You could sell it even better by handing out flyers for an upcoming play.

    17:08 - I think this sort of thing might apply to, like, when a 17 yr old and an 18 yr old are married. Technically, one's a minor and one's not, but they're basically the same age... Still a bit too early to get married in my opinion, but some places allow that sort of thing.

    • @ariadne0w1
      @ariadne0w1 ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Most states in the US allow child marriage. 8 states have no minimum age requirement. So if a parent and a judge approve of a 10 year old marrying her 50 yr old rapist so she doesn't have a baby out of wedlock, that is legal in some states, and has happened similarly in living memory. Yeah, they're probably talking about that sort of situation, but "child with adult spouse" is a for-real current problem in the US.

    • @wta1518
      @wta1518 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    I've seen the Boston sculpture in person -- it's a series of interlocking hands and arms; the oblong shape in the photograph is a bent arm shown from a weird angle. It's a bit uncanny to look at even in person since it's basically a loop of disembodied limbs. The sculptor based it on a photo of Martin Luther King Jr. and Coretta Scott King, which is cool in concept but the execution has definitely been criticized by some lol.
