There’s not a black person alive especially here in Chicago that did not grow up hearing about Emmett Till. He was only 14 years old at the time, it took place in Money , Mississippi 1955. That was such a shame. If Mr. Till were alive today he would be 80 years old.
I’m a Mexican in Texas and i remember this story in school. Now I’m 31, i haven’t looked at the picture since, and can still see it in my mind clear as day. Disgusting what they did to that boy.
Thank you for putting his age in perspective, people need to realize that things were still that ugly not so long ago.
I'm age 35 and from NC. Emmitt Till just like soooo many others was NEVER mentioned in school. George Washington Carver and Harriet Tubman were the only Black folks that did anything of merit to hear them tell it. Gone With the Wind was and still is mandatory in alot of Southern school systems.
He would be my grandfather's age. People like to say : Oh but this was so long on ago" but don't realize it wasn't.
Texan here and we watched the video of his funeral in school. Those men that did that to Till should have received the same treatment

I'm Canadian. I wrote a book report on Emmett Till when I was 12. I'm 37 now. I can still remember the pictures of his body when they hauled him out of the water. If I remember correctly, years later the woman he was accused of whistling at admitted that he didn't even do it. 😓

The picture of Emmet Till in his casket is such a powerful image. Powerful, in so far as you KNOW that he is a 14 year old kid, and ADULTS did that to him.
It always shocks me how so often the perpetrators of discrimination describe their victims as 'less than' or 'like animals', believing that this somehow gives them permission to commit such crimes of humanity, like they're protecting the rest of the population from 'the wild ones'. But in reality, anyone who is so brutish to their fellow man is really the animal themselves....
At least those 2 criminals got what they deserved. Both Miliam & Bryant were orstracized from every community they moved it and lived a very hard life after that incident.
They would never show a picture like that now, for fear it would traumatize people. But it is really important that stories like this are told. How horrible for that child. How horrible for his mother. No one should ever have to live with that kind of pain.

He is a great story-teller. It's part of what makes his comedy the best.
At the very end when he says “and here we are”, the expression he has is so strong that for me it adds “but we’ve still aren’t where we neeed to be”

But, for the most part, I am on the same page and I would love to just have those conversations with him that you can't have in polite society.
My father still has the JET magazine from this. When I saw the cover when I was young, I did not understand it and asked my dad about it. He sat down with me and explained what happened to this young boy. It broke my heart

It's actually uplifting. It shows how far we've come from the 50s because of gangster mom's and the like that know to make powerful statements in the name of civil rights even if it means having to go through more pain. It shows progress.
I have heard this story many times and even seen his picture before his death and after. Its a heartbreaking story. I have never forgotten it.

I was lucky enough to have a great history teacher back in middle school who taught us about this during down time at the end of class one day. I feel like it was a good reflection on it. He didn't show emotion. He just hit us with the facts and let us see the photos. That shit was powerful.

Usually when African Americans are killed and they want to change the narrative they bring up your history as if that's the reason for your unjustified murder. i.e Philando Castile, Ahmaud Arbery, Geroge Floyd. Their records had nothing to do with what happened to them, yet they were still published in several articles.

I paid attention more about history with Dave than my actual teachers in school. And yet, he’s a comedian. He’s beyond a joke teller. He writes stories. He puts thought into words that we put our own opinion on. Remember, his mom was or still is, I think, a professor. So Dave is smart af for a reason.

My dad was born in the 1920s in a small southern town in rural NC. I remember him telling me that if there was a newspaper article about a black person, rather than post a picture the local paper would have a blank space where that picture would be. Regardless of the subject of the article. It could be about someone's incredible achievement, or a horrific crime. No picture....period. My dad was so disgusted by it. In the 60s when we were selling our house, he infuriated the entire neighborhood by selling it to a black family. He said that man's money was a green as any white man's. My dad died last year, he was in his 90s. I never once in my entire life heard him make one single negative comment about any person of color. He treated every single person equal. That's a pretty rare quality.
That little boy he’s talking about, I saw it on a documentary video for my history class and the way they left that boy was horrible😞 We all gotta love each other regardless of our “differences”. America needs to do better. The world needs to do better.

Money, Mississippi if I remember correctly. The men were found not guilty and then outside the court house told what they had done, because they couldn't be tried again. The show I watched said his mother could only identify him because of his eye color. They had wrapped him up in chicken wire and sank him in a river. I think he was missing a week or more before he was found. Very horrific story, I feel like those murderers are roasting in hell currently.

I remember the first time I heard Emmett Till's story i was in 8th grade history every time I hear his name his story I get chills and my heart aches for his mother.

Gotta love Dave Chappelle, people laugh while he's talking about serious shit but he keeps talking cause he knows some people are listening. And we're all lucky that the industry hasn't drowned him, but tbat alone is also a testament to how good of a MC, performer, speech giver he is.
I remember seeing his body in high school on Eyes On The Prize in speech class. It was horrific and I will never forget it!

Mr Chappelle is one of the most incredible comedian. I agree 100% with what Mr Altiti wrote "His jokes carry laughs and when he's being serious , his words carry weight. Cultural Icon" he said it perfectly. I love and respect Mr. Chappelle. I have watched him and Mr. Eddie Murphy for years they are the best.
No one should teach American history except Dave Chapelle.
As soon as he said '14 year old boy' I knew he was talking about Emmett Till because my ex husband is a huge fan of Bob Dylan and when we first met in 1982 he played me the song The Death of Emmett Till. The same with Rubin 'Hurricane' Carter, Hattie Carroll and Medgar Evers. Songs that inspired me to look into the history of what had happened to them. Prior to this I had never heard any of their names before, but I am in England which probably explains that.

This is the teacher I would have loved. I actually was kicked out of my high school history class for “talking out of curriculum”. That was the Sixties. No wonder I became radical.

I asked my dad one day, “Do you think people have purpose?”
He said, “Of course I do.”
And so I asked him if people have purpose, then why do people die at such a young age?
He said “Because their death has an impact on those around them, and that makes change.” Always stuck by me and this story is a perfect and bright example of that. I think Emmett would be honored to be talked about by Dave Chappelle, and by everybody in the amount that he is today. I was lucky enough to have a history teacher who went outside of the textbooks and eventually landed right there at that point. History is important for these reasons. It’s one thing to change history, it’s wrong but at least you have maybe some details, but we should never, never cover it up. History is as sacred as religion.
