I saw Stan in person, at my local movie theater, where I was watching a double-feature. He came onstage with the theater manager, between the films. He spoke to us for at least 10 minutes. I was totally in awe. It was only two years later, that he passed. Memories for a young teenager.

My Dad was into photograph and I remember he had a number of 8mm film, no sound, and when he got the projector out we'd always want to watch atleast one of the silent laurel and hardy films.
My favorite comedy duo of all time. I remember watching them in the late 80's with my dad and cracking up. I still watch them occasionally and I'm 45 now. Nobody will ever top their greatness.
Being filmed and photographed back then was a way to show off the best part of yourself. Even Laurel, sick and dying was smiling and cracking jokes. People didn`t really start to get comfortable and honest in front of cameras before the smart phone. And the difference in the world then and now is back then the leaders was crazy and today it`s the people who are crazy. We may actually need another WW as it seems like we have lost the ability to be humble.

They were wonderful people in a simple world,,,along with Charlie Chaplin, Abbott and Costello,,,,people meant something back then ,yes they went through the depression but during everything they still made the world good
Well as a huge Three Stooges fan, I'd have to disagree with you somewhat. I wouldn't say that the Stooges were better than Laurel and Hardy, or that Laurel and Hardy were better than the Marx Brothers, or that the Marx Brothers were better than Abbott and Costello, etc. I don't really think that you can consider any of them "better" than any of the others. They all had their own brand of comedy that was unique to their individual act and no one else could come close to reaching it. How's that?
That was a fantastic watch... Laurel & Hardy are timeless they will never age, I still watch them today nearly 100 years after their first film and still make me laugh..
Hey you should go on TH-cam and Google 1920s snowball fight in color ohmygosh ohmygosh I think they even recorded audio. The clarity was so credible it look like they filled it yesterday. All the people just seem so much happier back then
Those guys were my favorites. They used to show clips of them all the time, at Shakey's Pizza and it were the best times when I were a kid. Those guys just looking at them makes you feel good inside, just being themselves. Not anything like Hollyweird today. They were something that you will never see again; unless you watch them again on screen.

I remember BBC 2 used to show them on TV after I got home from school when small I liked it when Stan used to star I think her name was Bibi playing both there wife in the comedy film series and had a temper on her.

Nobody cares if you watched their films in the 1960s. You were supposed to watch them in the 1930s when they were made in the 30s. You weren't born in the greatest generation so you are a loser.

123Rockchild There was this tibit in an interview with Stan Laurel after Hardy's death where he told about walking into a store and the clerk went "Excuse me, don't mean to bother you but you look familiar, might I know who you are?" And Laurel went "Why certainly, I am Oliver Hardy!" At which the clerk told him that he knew all their movies and inquired to what had happened to Stan Laurel. At which Laurel told him that Stan had died recently. At which the clerk went about what a shame it was, such a genius of comedy. Laurel made no efforts to reveal who he really was and cried tears of happiness knowing that his legacy would continue and he did it all while pretending to be Hardy, in doing so lovingly giving Hardy all the credit.

Indeed. Most of this was filmed at the home of Stan's daughter and her husband Rand Brooks, who was in Gone With The Wind. Stan kept an extraordinary character called Jimmy Murphy as his valet. The dog in this film is Mr. Murphy, named after Stan's valet.

Indeed. Stan’s own health was not too good at the time, and his doctor realized that the emotional strain of attending Babe’s funeral might literally kill him, so he forbade Stan from going. They knew each other so well; Stan knew Babe would want him to rest and get better, and that he didn’t need to attend for Babe to know that he loved him.

These two were always meant to come together and create a magic that changed the world for the better. They worked in harmony with each other, never fought or disagreed or envied each other, always shared the spotlight on and off the screen as their popularity took off, and became bonded for life. Their affection and brotherly love that infuses all of their films was completely authentic and genuine. Stan had no interest in working alone or with any other partner after Babe died and turned down multiple huge, expensive offers to do so. The bond they formed was one in a million, and we - as viewers of their genius - are all better people because of it.
There was also an issue of their health. Sadly, I read elsewhere that Stan had a couple of strokes prior to this film (both in comments and in the OP). So I'm sure that had quite a bit to do with his refusal to do other movies. But with anybody else? That would seem like anathema, wouldn't it? It's even strange to see them in the silent era, working separately!

When Stan was diagnosed with diabetes in the late 1940s, Babe didn’t want to work without him and it was only Stan’s insistence that convinced him to agree to appear in John Wayne’s “The Flying Kentuckian.” When Babe had a heart attack during a 1954 European music hall tour, Stan canceled all remaining engagements and went home with Babe so he could get better. After Stan had a stroke in 1955, Babe visited him at home, and according to their biographer John McCabe, Babe said to Stan “well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten yourself into!” after the stroke, which cheered Stan up. And then when Babe had a massive, crippling stroke in 1956 (just three months after this home movie was shot) and was left unable to speak, Stan was on standby and visited him every time Mrs. Lucille Hardy called and said Babe was lucid enough for a visit. They would mostly communicate in pantomime since Stan didn’t really want to speak if Babe couldn’t. I'm only 49 but, I miss the days when shows like this were on tv. Abbot And Costello. Blondie etc...When I get into conversations with people younger than myself and mention peolle like this, they say I'm an old man. I reply, you got robbed from seeing true talent.
Thats why we need to enjoy what lives we have now, cos at anytime it could be gone. And as the world gets worse there will be people in 80 years time watching videos of our time now and they will be saying "god i wish we could go back to the good old days of 2020". I grew up with these two, my Grandfather had a stack of cine 8. later on TV, then I bought the video collection, now it's DVD. The greatest comedy duo ever.
even though I wasn't born until 1982 I still harbor much respect and admiration for Laurel and Hardy as anyone from their era does, I will always miss them a great deal for they come from a period of time when comedy was authentic and true to it's name, r.i.p guys and thank you so so much 😢

I am 69 years old and they are still my favorite comedians. They are REAL comedians along with many others like W.C. Fields, Red Skeleton, Lucille Ball. REAL comedians NEVER resort to filthy trash talk. God Bless them and may all of them RIP

@@patgogan7324 Yeah but its comminly stated the tobacco was a lot more natural back then with less chemicals added. I have seen people who quit smoking because of the deminishing flavour rssulting from the extra chemicals, smoking cigarettes from the 70s and commenting how they taste a lot better than modern cigarettes in spite of how old they are.
And they did so without using foul language and sex, fart and poop jokes. This simple, innocent, but clever style of humor is really missed these days. There will never again be people like L&H, Chaplin, Keaton, Marx Brothers or Abbott & Costello, but fortunately we can still watch their old stuff.
I love how this was a chilled out family day between 2 colleagues that became best mates towards the end..as seen here, and they still gave the fans a bit of the old Stan and Ollie. 2 beautiful, timeless legends.

We called our youngest son Oliver after Oliver hardy ....out house is a shrine to them and their work...my two boys love them...I'm blessed to have been brought up watching the two funniest men that ever lived. X

I've lost count of the number of comedian duos that have tried to imitate these two fabulous guys. They may be older here but their facial expressions remain the same. RIP both of you and 'thanks for the memory' as the great late Bob Hope used to say!
They can't help but play up to the cameras. Through thick and thin these to stuck it out until the end. And my God they were so good together. This is about empathy, love, friendship and respect for each other.
I hope he had a lot of people call him and that they had fun with him too. It's hard to watch this last bit of film without crying, knowing that they were so old and sick, but still in great spirits. At least they made it out of this word before it turned to complete and utter shit..
paul coates Well if you look at them they look way older than they were, and back in that day, there was no plastic surgery or creams or pills for anti-aging. So they may have been "this" old but looked "that" old due to their illnesses and the like. In any case, what a rare film clip and one that makes you tear up knowing this was one of their last times together.
Very true. Stan always answered his phone no matter what time of day it was and would chat with the callers. He also answered all his own fan mail. He lived a comfortable life in a small house. When he died, Dick Van Dyke read "The Clown's Prayer" at Stan's funeral. Charlie Chaplin said of Stan's passing that the world had lost of the greatest comedians ever. He and Stan both worked for Fred Karno and both came to America two years apart.
That was a flashback. Stan resembles my father and their show was amoung my Dad's favorites. Hogan's Hero's, was the other. Everyone had a smoke, just like my family. And I haven't seen a tablecloth over a picnic table in 35 years. These shots could have been my family...Weird. Thanks for the post.

I wouldn't change it for the world. Hard work? Yes I agree and you must know better having two. But you are blessed my friend. Due to my age at 64 (although people say it is only a number) I feel my years in my knees and my back and its getting hard for me to keep up. My two favorite comedians in both silent and talkie films. I laughed my head off back when I was a little boy and watched their movies on TV. About the only place left to watch the great silent movies is on TH-cam.
Without a doubt, the greatest comedy double act in history. And they will remain that forever. I very much doubt that anybody will ever come even close to them. Since they were best friends in real life, that real life chemistry helped their act more then anything.
Just watched the Laurel and Hardy movie. They were perfect together. Their comic timing was impeccable. Even though I have seen every episode (except some of the very early silent episodes) there are always surprises in their slapstick humor.

Not many things make me laugh aloud but L & H do - even when I've seen their films repeatedly for decades. Another test of time is the fact that I've seen so many children in fits of laughter when watching them. Well as a huge Three Stooges fan, I'd have to disagree with you somewhat. I wouldn't say that the Stooges were better than Laurel and Hardy, or that Laurel and Hardy were better than the Marx Brothers, or that the Marx Brothers were better than Abbott and Costello, etc. I don't really think that you can consider any of them "better" than any of the others. They all had their own brand of comedy that was unique to their individual act and no one else could come close to reaching it. How's that?

Those guys were my favorites. They used to show clips of them all the time, at Shakey's Pizza and it were the best times when I were a kid. Those guys just looking at them makes you feel good inside, just being themselves. Not anything like Hollyweird today. They were something that you will never see again; unless you watch them again on screen.

And Laurel went "Why certainly, I am Oliver Hardy!"
At which the clerk told him that he knew all their movies and inquired to what had happened to Stan Laurel. At which Laurel told him that Stan had died recently. At which the clerk went about what a shame it was, such a genius of comedy.
Laurel made no efforts to reveal who he really was and cried tears of happiness knowing that his legacy would continue and he did it all while pretending to be Hardy, in doing so lovingly giving Hardy all the credit.
The greatest duo to have graced the screens. RIP boys, 2019 and still missed.

Indeed. Most of this was filmed at the home of Stan's daughter and her husband Rand Brooks, who was in Gone With The Wind. Stan kept an extraordinary character called Jimmy Murphy as his valet. The dog in this film is Mr. Murphy, named after Stan's valet.

But it was obviously health related.A tearful Buster Keaton said at Stans funeral that some said Chaplin was the funnest but in fact it was this man Stan Laurel that was the Funnest.

Indeed. Stan’s own health was not too good at the time, and his doctor realized that the emotional strain of attending Babe’s funeral might literally kill him, so he forbade Stan from going. They knew each other so well; Stan knew Babe would want him to rest and get better, and that he didn’t need to attend for Babe to know that he loved him.

I"m in my late 60's and I've been watching these two geniuses since i was a kid. There was no one better.
These two were always meant to come together and create a magic that changed the world for the better. They worked in harmony with each other, never fought or disagreed or envied each other, always shared the spotlight on and off the screen as their popularity took off, and became bonded for life. Their affection and brotherly love that infuses all of their films was completely authentic and genuine. Stan had no interest in working alone or with any other partner after Babe died and turned down multiple huge, expensive offers to do so. The bond they formed was one in a million, and we - as viewers of their genius - are all better people because of it.
There was also an issue of their health. Sadly, I read elsewhere that Stan had a couple of strokes prior to this film (both in comments and in the OP). So I'm sure that had quite a bit to do with his refusal to do other movies. But with anybody else? That would seem like anathema, wouldn't it? It's even strange to see them in the silent era, working separately!

When Stan was diagnosed with diabetes in the late 1940s, Babe didn’t want to work without him and it was only Stan’s insistence that convinced him to agree to appear in John Wayne’s “The Flying Kentuckian.” When Babe had a heart attack during a 1954 European music hall tour, Stan canceled all remaining engagements and went home with Babe so he could get better. After Stan had a stroke in 1955, Babe visited him at home, and according to their biographer John McCabe, Babe said to Stan “well, here’s another nice mess you’ve gotten yourself into!” after the stroke, which cheered Stan up. And then when Babe had a massive, crippling stroke in 1956 (just three months after this home movie was shot) and was left unable to speak, Stan was on standby and visited him every time Mrs. Lucille Hardy called and said Babe was lucid enough for a visit. They would mostly communicate in pantomime since Stan didn’t really want to speak if Babe couldn’t. McCabe said Babe burst into tears at his inability to speak to Stan, clearly having so much to say to him, but Stan somehow understood just by looking into his eyes and whispered “Yes, Babe, yes.” 😭

Unlike so many people these days these two fine artists gave so much laughter, entertainment and goodness to multiple generations.
And they did so without using foul language and sex, fart and poop jokes. This simple, innocent, but clever style of humor is really missed these days. There will never again be people like L&H, Chaplin, Keaton, Marx Brothers or Abbott & Costello, but fortunately we can still watch their old stuff.

We called our youngest son Oliver after Oliver hardy ....out house is a shrine to them and their work...my two boys love them...I'm blessed to have been brought up watching the two funniest men that ever lived. X

I've lost count of the number of comedian duos that have tried to imitate these two fabulous guys. They may be older here but their facial expressions remain the same. RIP both of you and 'thanks for the memory' as the great late Bob Hope used to say!
They can't help but play up to the cameras. Through thick and thin these to stuck it out until the end. And my God they were so good together. This is about empathy, love, friendship and respect for each other.

paul coates Well if you look at them they look way older than they were, and back in that day, there was no plastic surgery or creams or pills for anti-aging. So they may have been "this" old but looked "that" old due to their illnesses and the like. In any case, what a rare film clip and one that makes you tear up knowing this was one of their last times together.
Very true. Stan always answered his phone no matter what time of day it was and would chat with the callers. He also answered all his own fan mail. He lived a comfortable life in a small house. When he died, Dick Van Dyke read "The Clown's Prayer" at Stan's funeral. Charlie Chaplin said of Stan's passing that the world had lost of the greatest comedians ever. He and Stan both worked for Fred Karno and both came to America two years apart.

I wouldn't change it for the world. Hard work? Yes I agree and you must know better having two. But you are blessed my friend. Due to my age at 64 (although people say it is only a number) I feel my years in my knees and my back and its getting hard for me to keep up. But gladly to say my 6yo understands why her daddy is a little older than other daddies therefore it makes my work with her a lot lighter.

My two favorite comedians in both silent and talkie films. I laughed my head off back when I was a little boy and watched their movies on TV. About the only place left to watch the great silent movies is on TH-cam.
Without a doubt, the greatest comedy double act in history. And they will remain that forever. I very much doubt that anybody will ever come even close to them. Since they were best friends in real life, that real life chemistry helped their act more then anything.
Just watched the Laurel and Hardy movie. They were perfect together. Their comic timing was impeccable. Even though I have seen every episode (except some of the very early silent episodes) there are always surprises in their slapstick humor.

I remember when I was a young child back in the early/mid 1970s how some of my friends liked Abbott and Costello better. For me, however, Laurel and Hardy were my favourites.
If you think so, then what brings you to this video? Evidently a lot of people have disagreed with you for most of a century - and rightly so. Not many things make me laugh aloud but L & H do - even when I've seen their films repeatedly for decades. Another test of time is the fact that I've seen so many children in fits of laughter when watching them. Maybe it lacks vulgarity by today's standards but the fact that they generated such a following without it says it all.

Even just watching them stand beside each other and one classic song can bring smile to my face .What a magnificent legacy they left.

My favorites were the Three Stooges but me and my brothers always enjoyed Laurel and Hardy. What a great sight to see them get along after their careers...seems like most of the "acts" back in those days couldn't stand to be in the same room......Cheers

Curly Joe Derita said the best times of his life were with the stooges. But he was not a fan of their comedy. To him, Laurel and Hardy were the best and funniest.
