This is the first time I've ever heard Stan Laurel's voice out of character. What a great interview. Back in the day, there weren't interview shows like today. For example, have you ever heard WC Field's or Mae West's normal speaking voice out of character? What is so wonderful about Laurel and Hardy is that their character voices so perfectly matched their screen personas, even though they started in silent movies. One of my favorite silent actors is Clara Bow, who, it turns out, had a Brooklyn accent in real life.
I can't imagine anyone giving this video a thumbs down and yet there they are. People who do things like this cannot possibly be familiar with the work and genius of Laurel and Hardy, the greatest comic duo of all time. His partner, Oliver Hardy had died two years previously and Stan Laurel was alone in retirement and knowing that the best years were now over and gone. Never again would he and "Babe" be before the cameras preforming their routines to the delight of millions. Just reflections and memories of what was once.
I somehow wish I had the chance to shake his hand! Saying nothing just look in his eyes! I thank you for the joy you and Oliver gave us! A deep bow of respect!
Its incredible to think that Laurel and Hardy films are still so watchable today and classic examples of "How to do it"! They were unique and their comedy was timeless, it never gets old. Their sight gags were fabulous and their personal mannerisms mesmerising. You could see the gag coming and when it did it was all the funnier for it. I think Morecambe and Wise employed that technique to great effect too which they doubtless learned from these two masters of their craft.

Laurel was the mastermind; he did the writing and directing/choreography of all their work together, and he gave Oliver many of the best moments in the scenes they did together. Oliver Hardy truthfully was the better actor. His gestures and facial expressions, etc., have been mimicked for a century by countless comedic actors like the great Jackie Gleason. Stan Laurel was a comedic genius for the ages. His last joke; he really wished for people to be happy: "If any of you cry at my funeral, I will never speak to you again." - Stan Laurel LOL
Actually his last joke was on his death-bed as he was dying. He said to the nurse: "I wish I was ski-ing now" and she obligingly responded "I didn't know you were a skier Mr. Laurel". To which he finally uttered: "I'm not, never was, but I'd much rather be doing that than doing this." And then he died.
Yes , quite right. His wife once said that he used to watch their old movies at home and loved to watch his old sparring partner Oli' and always said that he (Babe) was a treat to work with.

This is my first hearing of this rare interview with the comic genius that was Stan Laurel. A British born Hollywood star along with his American buddy and sidekick Oliver "Babe" Norville Hardy! They were very much part and parcel of my past and still live by love, in my memory, today!
I have seen his house, his school and his church and the theater his father worked in. Bishop Aukland. Such a humble man from a humble background. You don’t get that anymore. Thank you for the many laughs you gave me growing up.

Some people just don't get Laurel and Hardy. I saw a review on Way Out West - I think it was on imdb - in which the reviewer says the first five minutes of the film (the bar scene) are great, but then Laurel and Hardy appear and the whole film falls flat. Yes, really!

One of my favourite memories is showing my young son the Music Box Steps one morning before school. We laughed so hard that his older sisters came running downstairs wondering what all the noise was about! Happy times. X

RANGER - Yes, this is baffling, because he moved to Glasgow at the age of 15. The school-leaving age in England was 14 then, and his schooling was all in Durham, at Gainford Academy and in Tynemouth. Even if he just finished his schooling for a short time in Glasgow, why does he say "...in Glasgow, where I received most of my education" ? I was always confused by the sources that said Stan attended Stonelaw High School in one case, and Rutherglen Academy in another one. Finally I found that both names were acceptable for the same school. They don't make it easy.
Wasn't he a truly lovely man, so generous with his praise of others yet not wishing to claim it for himself. He and Oliver Hardy were a perfect combination who didn't have one iota of jealousy for each other although Stanley was obviously the dominant one in that he did all the work between films and Hardy was content to just play his comedy part when there. The only two comic performers that come anywhere near their close and obvious love and respect for one another would be the late Morcambe and Wise who had a similar working relationship, with one organising the work between shoots whilst the other was content to play his part only when called. Great comic teams of genius are few and far between, we are unlikely to ever see their like again.
In your opinion which is not shared by me and millions of others I'm sure but putting that to one side because tastes in comedy vary from one person to another, I was talking of their working relationship and love for one another, I was not saying one was better than the other. They were different people at different times in our history.

When I was young, I worked with a smashing old fellow called Ken Wood. He adored L & H, and would have loved to have been able to listen to this. Gone the same way as Stan and Oli now, bless him.
The Panopticon Theatre in Glasgow was the first place young Stan took to the stage. It's still open and they show L & H films there on a regular basis.
There's something about hearing my biggest comedy hero mention he was raised for a while in Durham, makes me even more proud to come from Durham. 1st time I ever noticed a slight North East accent coming through too.
I live near Ollie's birthplace in Harlem, Ga. I've visited the Laurel & Hardy Museum there many times. Hardy's home no longer stands but is notated with a nice tablet. There's an official state historical marker about Mr. Hardy's time in Harlem and overall bio in front of the museum. Latter's filled with artifacts from the duo's career and contains a theater where one can watch their short films. Great place!

I remember a little 8 year old boy asking his 35 year old parents for the box set one Xmas after seeing episodes on his Grans tv, They were shocked he even knew who they were! Well Here I am nearly 30 myself and still go into A fit of laughter watching these guys! I will always remember the scene with the chimney sweeper that's my favourite! I'm actually grinning at the thought of it now 🤣

I learned of Laurel and Hardy due to my dad's thorough enjoyment of their movies...I sure miss watching and listening to my dad's reaction to the silliness of Laurel and Hardy.
Fascinating to hear this account of his early days. It seems there is a cut at 8:22 which is a shame since Laurel jumps from talking of the US Karno shows in 1913 to speaking about Hardy ('Babe') and how much fun they had so much is missing in between. Never mind, it is great to hear the history he does relate- thanks!
The last time I really ached with laughter, (which was a very long time ago), was when watching 'Berth Marks'; not ! in 1929, but later; especially that moment when Stan's foot goes into Ollie's face. Whether it was tremendous acting or not, I don't know, but there are moments, in those stupendous scenes, up in the train's bunk bed, where Ollie seemed really to lose his temper. I'm sorry that it seems they weren't quite as close as I'd hoped. I truly loved their work, and have something akin to love for the people they played, which was, in their turn, something a little different from the men they really were. God bless them both.
The voice is pleasing. It just cracks me up to see his face while that voice makes lucid conversation. When he was younger and would stare at the camera with his IQ dropping on film, I actually thought he was rather slow( I was considerably younger too). What a great human being. Good one Roman Styran !
People like entertainers be they singers, musicians, actors, sports personalities or whatever. But I have never ever watched one of L and H films without at some point crying with laughter and I have never known such an international outpouring of LOVE for these two and I don't mean people like them they love what they brought to us and seeing how humble they both were in real life makes that love somehow more rightous if you get my meaning. Even today, people watching them soon fall in love with them. i doubt we shall ever see the likes of these two again which makes us here quite lucky really.
I worked in a building that used to be a Bishop Auckland theatre. Word was he haunted that place. Northern Echo did an article on it. Slow news day perhaps. Everytime a window banged or a door slammed we blamed Stan

Even if he just finished his schooling for a short time in Glasgow, why does he say "...in Glasgow, where I received most of my education" ? I was always confused by the sources that said Stan attended Stonelaw High School in one case, and Rutherglen Academy in another one. Finally I found that both names were acceptable for the same school. They don't make it easy.

Wasn't he a truly lovely man, so generous with his praise of others yet not wishing to claim it for himself. He and Oliver Hardy were a perfect combination who didn't have one iota of jealousy for each other although Stanley was obviously the dominant one in that he did all the work between films and Hardy was content to just play his comedy part when there. The only two comic performers that come anywhere near their close and obvious love and respect for one another would be the late Morcambe and Wise who had a similar working relationship, with one organising the work between shoots whilst the other was content to play his part only when called. Great comic teams of genius are few and far between, we are unlikely to ever see their like again.
Sham Teal Morcambe and Wise shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as Laurel and Hardy. Not even in the same league as Stan and Ollie
In your opinion which is not shared by me and millions of others I'm sure but putting that to one side because tastes in comedy vary from one person to another, I was talking of their working relationship and love for one another, I was not saying one was better than the other. They were different people at different times in our history.

All of Glasgow is proud of our association with him. He made his debut here, at the Britannia Panopticon, when he was just 16. His mother Margaret Metcalfe Jefferson is buried in an ancient graveyard just 200 yards from my house, in the grounds of Cathcart Old Parish Church.

When I was young, I worked with a smashing old fellow called Ken Wood. He adored L & H, and would have loved to have been able to listen to this. Gone the same way as Stan and Oli now, bless him.

There's something about hearing my biggest comedy hero mention he was raised for a while in Durham, makes me even more proud to come from Durham. 1st time I ever noticed a slight North East accent coming through too.
True. He lived in North Shields for 10 years as a boy,and went to school in Tynemouth and Gainford.
I live near Ollie's birthplace in Harlem, Ga. I've visited the Laurel & Hardy Museum there many times. Hardy's home no longer stands but is notated with a nice tablet. There's an official state historical marker about Mr. Hardy's time in Harlem and overall bio in front of the museum. Latter's filled with artifacts from the duo's career and contains a theater where one can watch their short films. Great place!

I learned of Laurel and Hardy due to my dad's thorough enjoyment of their movies...I sure miss watching and listening to my dad's reaction to the silliness of Laurel and Hardy.

Fascinating to hear this account of his early days. It seems there is a cut at 8:22 which is a shame since Laurel jumps from talking of the US Karno shows in 1913 to speaking about Hardy ('Babe') and how much fun they had so much is missing in between. Never mind, it is great to hear the history he does relate- thanks!

Laurel and hardy, the best comedians our world has ever had,never beaten never equalled.
The last time I really ached with laughter, (which was a very long time ago), was when watching 'Berth Marks'; not ! in 1929, but later; especially that moment when Stan's foot goes into Ollie's face. Whether it was tremendous acting or not, I don't know, but there are moments, in those stupendous scenes, up in the train's bunk bed, where Ollie seemed really to lose his temper.
I'm sorry that it seems they weren't quite as close as I'd hoped.
I truly loved their work, and have something akin to love for the people they played, which was, in their turn, something a little different from the men they really were.
God bless them both.

The voice is pleasing. It just cracks me up to see his face while that voice makes lucid conversation. When he was younger and would stare at the camera with his IQ dropping on film, I actually thought he was rather slow( I was considerably younger too). What a great human being. Good one Roman Styran !
People like entertainers be they singers, musicians, actors, sports personalities or whatever. But I have never ever watched one of L and H films without at some point crying with laughter and I have never known such an international outpouring of LOVE for these two and I don't mean people like them they love what they brought to us and seeing how humble they both were in real life makes that love somehow more rightous if you get my meaning. Even today, people watching them soon fall in love with them. i doubt we shall ever see the likes of these two again which makes us here quite lucky really.
