Block-Heads is a 1938 comedy film starring Stan Laurel and Oliver Hardy, produced by Hal Roach Studios for Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer. The film, a reworking of elements from the Laurel and Hardy shorts We Faw Down (1928) and Unaccustomed As We Are (1929), was Roach's final film for MGM, and is remembered as one of Laurel and Hardy's most successful films.
PLOT
The film opens in the trenches of World War I where Ollie, Stan and the rest of their army company are ready to go 'over the top', but Stan is ordered to stay behind to guard the trench. Stock scenes of fighting are then seen followed by the caption 'Armistice'. Twenty years pass, and Stan is still guarding the post, as shown by the huge pile of bean cans he has accumulated, and the path he has worn pacing back and forth on guard. He is found by accident (after firing on a plane he sees approaching) and is brought home, feted as a hero. Ollie, who has been married for a year to the formidable Mrs Hardy (Minna Gombell), sees him in a newspaper and visits him in the veterans' home. He finds Stan in a wheelchair, having apparently lost a leg, and invites him home. However, Stan is in fact just resting in another veteran's wheelchair and Ollie only finds out he still has both legs after pushing him around in the chair and then carrying him. Ollie, angrily: "Why didn't you tell me you had two legs?" Stan: "Well, you didn't ask me." They reach Ollie's automobile, which he says belongs to his wife and is 'practically new', but it is boxed in by a dump truck. Stan climbs into the cab to move it and inadvertently operates the dump mechanism, burying the car in sand and leaving only Ollie's head exposed. It is then completely wrecked when Ollie demonstrates the automatic garage door at his home and allows Stan to drive the car in to test it.
There is then a lengthy scene of the pair attempting to climb thirteen flights of stairs to Ollie's apartment because they think the elevator is out of order. They are resting near the top when a top hat-wearing man with a cane (James Finlayson) insults Ollie, leading him to challenge him to a fight outside. They return down the stairs, picking up spectators along the way. After settling the disagreement, the pair finally reach the top of the stairs, where they run into a brattish kid (Tommy Bond) with a football. Ollie kicks his ball down the stairwell, where it hits the face of a man speaking on a telephone at reception. The kid's burly father emerges and orders Ollie back down the stairs to fetch it. After a 'tit-for-tat' fight with the father, the ball is kicked down the stairwell again and hits the man in the face a second time. When they finally reach the apartment, Ollie's wife wants Stan to leave immediately, as she is disgusted with the bums he brings home. When food is demanded she walks out, leaving Ollie to prepare a meal for Stan, but the pair only succeed in blowing up the kitchen.
Across the hall, Ollie's attractive neighbor, Mrs Gilbert (Patricia Ellis), offers to help clear up the mess. She is then soaked by a bowl of punch (the only item left unscathed from the kitchen explosion) and the only dry clothing Ollie can find is a pair of his enormous pajamas. Mrs Hardy then returns, because her car is wrecked, and Ollie tries to conceal Mrs Gilbert by covering her with a cloth to make her resemble a chair. After Stan unwittingly sits on her, Ollie hides her inside a trunk.All this time, Mrs.Hardy has been quarreling with Ollie, and finally leaves. Big-game hunter Mr Gilbert (Billy Gilbert) then arrives and the wife reveals herself after he boasts about his extra-marital conquests. He then chases Stan and Ollie back down the stairs, blasting at them with a shotgun, missing the duo, but hitting everything else. A large number of philandering husbands jump out of windows with trousers off.

All time great comedy duo. In my present age of 72, I like to watch Stan & Olie whenever I get scope to watch their comedy films. This is called immortal. They are with for ever.

The moment Ollie sees Stan in the chair with one leg is so very emotional. In just a few seconds, Ollie's facial expressions speak of sadness for his friend's supposed injury, but also, the pain of war, which took so much from so many.
"You know if I hadn't seen you, I would never have known you." Another of their subtle but classic lines.
Since I was a child, as soon as I see Laurel and Hardy, I start laughing even if they did nothing, they were genuine comedians that will never be replaced.

It's not just the comedy, it's the pathos too. There are so many aspects to their comedy, but the greatest part is the relationship between them, which gives their work a different dimension. There are times when they are very funny, but times when they don't need to be because the warmth that comes across is so wonderful. It's an essential part of their appeal because they almost always played losers, forever down on their luck and there would otherwise be sadness - as there is with Chaplin - which just isn't there with L&H whatever their misfortune. They learnt their craft in the silent era, but talkies made them iconic because we saw their true character and personality.
Some of their most natural dialogue. It's almost like hearing Stan and Oliver having a real conversation.
Here we are talking about Legends! What an immense way of acting. May They R.I.P.

I can't imagine anyone ever giving Laurel and Hardy the thumbs down, cause they were the best they ever was, or will be! They were true friends in real life, and they were halarious and didn't need to be undignified to be so! I'm so honored to have been in a life time where I have gotten the privilege to know who they are! Two of my favorite people that ever passed through this planet!

I must've seen this 40 times (maybe more) and, amazingly, I still laugh so hard I can hardly breath. I must be crazy....
My brother and I watched them every Saturday morning when we were little. That was 70 years ago. We are still watching.
These have really stood the test of time. Imagine, they were made almost 100 years ago in a time that was quite different than what we are used to today. yet, young people today can still relate to and enjoy these skits just as much as people living back then.
Amazing, I have been watching these guys for 60 years and it still feels like I am watching them for the first time, thank you guys.

These two great men made amazing clean comedy without the need for foul language. Great family comedy that is still being enjoyed by adults and children to this day. If you're ever feeling down just watch a bit of Stan and Olly and you'll be happy again in no time.

I think this love for each other in this clip signifies true, enduring friendship through thick and thin. Everyone really deserves that. I never thought Laurel and Hardy and the love they represented to me as a child would feel so ironic in its absence in my adult life.
I think the world, thanks to all-pervasive digital technology, has forgotten to laugh. Has forgotten how to laugh. Technology today means familiarity is in our face, breeding contempt like never before. Coupled with the ridiculously tiny, tyrannical screens, icons of entertainment, say, are looked down upon. Their value, their art, is much diminished and therefore under-appreciated on the tiny screen. People no longer watch, moreover, nice things in the company of others. Technology, which at first brought entertainment to the masses, such as the comedy in the Silent Era (before radio got going), has become an end in itself, totally usurping light entertainment. We have now all this technology, yet for many people who relish the technology, much misery. What a shame! If we aim to laugh as of old, even those prone to taking offence would see in a new regime of light entertainment that has become a force again, that the humour and satire are devoid of malice. And that style of delivery of humour devoid of malice has no better exponent of it than Oliver Hardy, in my opinion.
Watched L&H with my grandfather 60 years ago, can still see him laughing. I will make sure that my grandchildren watch

Ah, goodness me... Brings back many memories of Saturday morning children's' pictures at the cinema. 6d and all the laughs you can fit in in an hour or so. Those were the days. Stan and Ollie - brilliant!
80+ years on, it still looks effortlessly easy, but it really isn't. Their instinctive sense of where the other one is and which way to move - from over a decade of doing this stuff together on an almost weekly basis - is still the template any physical comedian aspires to. Putting them together in a silent movie - as a duo - in 1927 is the cinema equivalent of Paul McCartney meeting John Lennon. A pivotal moment in 20th century culture.
These guys were the best ever. Their special friendship showed through in everything they did.

Laurel and Hardy in "March of the Wooden Soldiers" is some of the funniest comedy I've ever seen.
It hurts my back.....just watching that dropped hat scene...... when I was young....my 'ol man used to "check out" 8mm films of theirs from the local library.....
and bring them home for us to watch....this was back in the early '70's ...... and yes...... I'm old. Today is 5-19-2023.
