Yes, I also read that the inline Phillips was shortened to accommodate the versions with the light as it was larger. I may have to by a current explorer to see the new line up. Thanks for watching
I'm curious, I have an Explorer that I bought in the early 90's some time. I can't recall exactly which year. It has the parcel hook which suggests that it is 91 or newer, but it does not have the pin or pinhole.
@exploringitall8588 Thabk you. That makes sense because I thought I bought it some time between 1989 and 1992. So now I can say 1989 and 1990 are out lol. It has serves me very well over the years. I was considering getting plus scales for it but they want more for the scales now than I paid for the knife back then. The pin would be nice but I actually carry a threaded needle under the parcel hook so essentially have one. I like the idea of a pen too but considering I really don't go anywhere without my phone, I kind of have the ability to take notes, I just can't leave notes. Maybe I will invest in those plus scales.
There was also a version of the explorer that has the centre layers reversed for some reason? These were produced before the parcel hook with the grey mag lense! I have never been able to find out why they did it though?
It’s likely the original explorer, pre 1991 that’s when the package hook was introduced. The grooved corkscrew is also pre 91. The Grey magnifier went until about 2004. Thanks for watching!!
I just purchased a new Explorer. I was sure it didn't have a straight pin hole, because I looked when I first took it out of the box. After watching your video, I had a closer look at mine and sure enough, the pin hole WAS there (apparently, I hadn't looked close enough--that hole is tiny). I was thinking about getting plus scales for the knife, but now I may not. Thanks for your video!
Victorinox is best knife- multi tool for carrying in town. When I need knife and use my Victorinox nobody is terrified but if its Spider's, Benchmade 940 is always in my packet but in moust places when I need knife I use Explorer+and definitely best city knife/tool
I agree nobody really looks at a SAK (Swiss army knife) as a scary weapon. It’s just a recognized tool. I can also say it’s “saved the day” many times. No matter what else I’m carrying I still also have a SAK. Thanks for the subscribe and for watching !
I do use it for really fine print (that I still have trouble reading with my glasses). It will work in a pinch, but it’s small for reading on the regular. I’d say it more useful for getting out splinters, looking at small details in a watch for example, or as I demonstrated in one of these (sorry I forget which one), it works for starting a fire in the sun. Hope that answers your question.
Thank You for watching !! Yes I do think Char cloth is the key here. I I am sure you can probably do it without but I’m sure it would take a lot longer and be a lot more difficult.
The reason why they don't put the file on all the hooks is because they'd cost more to produce and that would impact sales. Same thing with other tools, such as plus scales (which come with the pen, straight pin, and mini screwdriver). The knives would cost quite a lot more if they all came with them.
Good video! The in-line phillips was longer as the mag glass was shorter...the newer Explorers are in reverse....

Looks like a good quality knife might have to explore my options and buy one.
Haha I see what you did there !! Thanks for watching and the Pun!
Omg... You guys, love the father daughter team! And of course the knives!
Thanks !! She is the best !!

The pin hole wasn’t common in most scales until after ‘93 according to SAK Wiki

@@davejoe2592 I do like the plus scales !

I had not heard of that and I have a few explorers
I have what I think is an explorer, but doesn't have the parcel hook, has the grey glass on it and the older corkscrew, what would this be?

Your welcome, and thank you for watching !!
It's nice to know that you start fire from the sun if you have too!!
Yes under ideal conditions, if it’s raining and at night it’s going to be a lot more difficult lol. Thanks For watching !!

I have a question at my age of 70yr old is the magnifier useful for reading small print or is just a gimmick to put something else in the knife

@@exploringitall8588 yes thanks
As you have shown, one of the keys to the fire starting is by using some char cloth….ty for sharing

Yes I am sure it’s a cost factor.
The plastic housing for the magnifyer is NOT durable on the latest version... I'm quite disappointed in the quality or lack thereof!
It doesn't seem as strong to me as well. I really wonder why they went to a lower magnification also,
