    I watched several of your bike reviews comparing the Switchblade to various other bikes. I ultimately ended up going with the Switchblade. After testing it, that bike just felt so comfortable no matter what I was putting it through. The Switchblade suspension feels really stable. Even when I messed up and got off of the ideal line, the Switchblade's suspension was like "no problem, I'll eat that up for you"! I also agree with you on its climbing ability, it truly does like to climb. I honestly couldn't be happier with my purchase.

      @@mtbyumyum I just had this vid suggested to me via YT and it's on point. Rarely do you see 2 upscale mtb's compared back to back in one vid. It's always a breakdown of one bike, and a lot of the same old bunk tossed at us. I'm shopping for a new rig and the Switchblade was at the top of the list, but maybe I should demo a Revel too. Anyway, solid work I dig your channel...subbed.

    Took delivery of my Rascal about a month ago, ridden it five times and still getting it dialed in but so far the clearest perception I have is how well it descends for the travel (this has been said many times). I also rode a Ripmo and a Ripley before buying it and I felt the Rascal was right in between the two. For slower chunky technical descents where I pick my way down the trail the Ripmo and Rascal were very similar but I found as speed picked up going downhill the Rascal clearly set itself apart from the Ripmo. Going up, the Ripley is the clear winner but I'm not racing anyone to the top. I'm a one bike guy and needed versatility to take the bike from local flow to Whistler and I think the Rascal will fit the bill. Downsides, this is my first time riding SRAM and I bought the GX build with guide r brakes, and imo this group set is not worthy of being bolted to this frame.

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Thank you for the insight!! I felt very similar to you... the Rascal holds it's own once the speed kicks up and I honestly think this bike with be worthy to hammer any trail I ride at a blurring rate of speed once I put a Lyrik up front!! Also, I agree... wish they had a slx or xt budget option....

    I just built up a Rascal with a Fox 36/dpx2. This is a great setup and overall bike. It can climb and descend! My only issue was pedal strikes, had to install 170 cranks. I do pedal through my corners...maybe more so than most and honestly think I could run 165"s on it, or bump up the travel in front to 150. I had a Evil following MB that i could never make friends with unfortunately. The Revel has made me super happy with its performance

    I’ve had my Rascal built with a 150mm Fox36 since last October, and it is the best trail bike I’ve ever ridden. I never rode it in the stock setup, but 150/130 is dialed for pretty much everything in Pisgah. For me it was this or the Druid, but they were sold out when I was buying the new frame.

    Love the in depth analysis! We talk a lot about climbing and descending, and I can pull bits of info regarding how nimble, poppy, etc. a bike is, but after all these reviews I've got one question...
    Of all the bikes you've ridden over the past two years or so, what is the most "playful" bike that would be good daily driver for Utah trails? For me it's all about FUN! Let's hear the top 29er and top 27.5.

    I sold my megatower and bought a new switchblade and I've never rode a better bike. I was worried about getting another long travel bike because of how bad of a taste the megatower left but I'm super happy I went with the switchblade. I too considered a rascal but got a ridiculous deal on a switchblade. Not mad but now super interested in riding a rascal sometime. Also, gonna try dropping from 40mm to 32 mm stem to shorten it up. Great video! Really timely. I was going to Moab (1st time) this Sat and the trip was bagged. I was renting a Rascal for the week with intentions of possibly building one. I will not be able to demo one this year. Other options I was exploring were the Pivot Switchblade, Orbea Occam, Yeti SB130, Santa Cruz Tallboy, and the Ibis Ripley. What I love about this video is that you didn't just talk about the climb and descents. I live in New England and too often that's all we get out of reviews (Climbing and descending big lines out west). What we need to know is everything in the middle. I'm now even more sold on the Rascal than before and the Pivot is out...Just what I needed.

      I really wanted to like the rascal after all I heard about it. Tried the rascal too, and then the switchblade as well. And to your credit I totally agreed with the assessment of the rascal riding more fun in most situations.
      That said, reading through the white papers of both suspension design I ultimately went for the pivot. I still don’t see the idea of removing the rider from the suspension equation as a design philosophy that I can get behind on. Hence I went for the switchblade ultimately because the suspension design felt superior to me.
      So I agree that the rascal rides awesome, but I know that my mind would always nag at me for buying the less well designed suspension curve llol.

    Seems like you’re a very light rider. My experience with the Rascal:
    Pro’s:
    -supreme climber
    -it feels fast and agile.
    Cons:
    -uses all the rear suspension on small drops but doesn’t feel harsh at all
    -bearing noise coming from the rear (it was crashed demo)
    Imo the Ripmo V1 climbs on par, but feels livelier and more capable on the downhills. All though I will make the jump and drops on either bike.

I've been riding it almost a year now and it's been my favorite 29er by far (comparing to Jekyll 29er, Habit 29er, Last gen Hightower, Last gen switchblade, trek fuel ex, stumpy) For the sentinel being as slack as it is, it climbs plenty well enough for me and absolutely kills the dh.

    If it was between both stock bikes, I'd go with Pivot: that DW Link is just amazing for everyday riding and has components of my preference. If I built a bike, I'd definitely build up a Rascal: I favor short and nimble bikes for agility on the trail and in the air.
    Tough choice between the 2. Do you still have the Ripley? If so, I'd have the Pivot as my climbing wrecking ball, and the Ibis is my nimble rocket ship.

      Totally agree! I prefer the xtr offering on the sb but I'll likely build a Rascal and just enjoy something different and new to me... Seems that as your wanting something different, the Switchblade is your jazz. Just because the Rascal is probably closer to the Ripley than the Switchblade and - the Pivot is a little more separated from the RIpley. Giving you a true two bike option. I actually think, not sure your thoughts, that the current Tallboy is closer to the Rascal, even though there is 10mm of travel difference. FYI, Revel is working on something 29er coming soon, long (er) travel? Will see... Hope to make the livestream Thursday. Great video Jason, you did a great job.

    Too many edits, I'm just going to repost:
    OK, let's see...
    Ripley (120mm) *1st* for rapid turning & acceleration
    Rascal (130mm) *2nd*
    Pivot SB (142mm) *3rd*
    - Makes sense, less rear travel = less power absorption, faster acceleration & direction change.
    Pivot SB (142mm) *1st* in descending
    Rascal (130mm) *2nd*
    Ripley (120mm) *3rd*
    - Makes sense, more rear travel = better gnarr absorption.
    Pivot Switchblade *1st in climbing???* Should be *last* because of both longer fork and rear shock travel equaling more wasted energy in pedaling, but *no??* - Then Pivot *wins* overall?
    Put a 150mm on the Rascal and you'll probably *lose* some of that Ripley-esc snappy feeling but would probably close the gap between it and the Pivot SB in the Gnarr & at speed.
    *- But if you already have a Ripley, why try to duplicate it?* Why even have a 2nd bike unless you *need something other* for maybe more dedicated Downhill shuttle rides, or mega-gnarr all-day rides?
    Yeti SB-150? - How would the 2020 Pivot SB do against *that* Enduro monster on shuttle rides & mega-gnarr downhills?

    So I now have a Ripley V4 XT with I9 Hydra and Ibis carbon rims (you certainly played a part in that) and I'm 175 lbs. I need to tune the shock and probably replace the spacer to make it less "bucky" on longer rocky/rooty climbs. The Ripley is a great bike so I sold my Yeti 4.5. Now I am looking for a second bike with more travel and I do not do parks and pump tracks or DH days. I want a good technical climber on the slow stuff...all the good ones like the Switchblade, Hightower, Offering, and even the Rascal, will descend well. I would love to hear your thoughts on the Switchblade vs SB150. I was super excited to get on a Switchblade and spin it around the neighborhood. However my shop had a leftover 19' SB150 T2 build ($5200). I know the 150 is a stout tank and isn't suited as a trail bike, but I'm 6'4" 260(w/kit) and the 150 just felt like it supported me. I took it out yesterday and did about 3000 total vert and about 20 miles of smooooth single track. I defiantly could tell that it was a lot easier to move around the faster I went. Did you feel the same way on the Switchblade? I think the 150 climbs pretty well for its size and better than my old SB5.5. I saw your review of of the 150. In your opinion, does the Switchblade have a considerable advantage over the 150 when climbing? If so, would it convince you to take the Switchblade over the 150 if you only had one bike?

      Yes, I would for sure take the switchblade over the sb150 as my only bike. That said, the sb150 has probably given me more fun than any other bike I've ever ridden. It's insanely fun at high speeds. So stable offer so much confidence it's incredible. Just the trails I ride most the time don't operate at that high of a speed so the switch play with pride be more fun on my everyday trials. Also, the switchblade out climbs the sb150. That said, congratulations on the new bike. I would love to own an sb150!

    A bit surprised that you never mentioned the Yeti SB130 when comparing "how a bike climbs". Or is that in a different less aggressive category?

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yeah, the problem is the sb130 didn't descent well so I didn't mention it because I just don't feel like it can hang with the Hightower, Offering, Ripmo, Switchblade, Stumpjumper and the like.... the 130 really didn't descent any better than the Ripley in my opinion. Its an excellent climbing bike but left me wanting giving the travel numbers and weight of the bike.... its more in the Ripley, Trail 429, Instinct category to me...

    Great comparison and video, thanks. Thinking of a a 2021 Large Rascal build do you think a 2021 Fox Float 36 Factory GRIP2 at 160mm would be too much travel?

    Great review! And yeti Lt 130,130LR and hightower?
    Will be rascal 150mm in 2021? Will be great news
    Coming for an 160-150 enduro bike, looking something, light! Around 30lbs ,better on climbing, and with similar Xc feeling on flats but best downhill performance possible in rought terrain for this mid travel bikes asumming i will lose at least 10% of performance
    Suggestions?

    Did the Rascal build have their fusion fiber wheels? Curious to hear comparisons of that wheel set and whether it’s worth the X01 build price premium.

      No, it did not have the new Revel Wheels. My Demo bike I had for the last two weeks had I9 Wheels

    Would you say the Rascal comes to life/is more playful than the Switchblade at lower speeds??

    • @mtbyumyum
      @mtbyumyum  2 ปีที่แล้ว

      Yeah, maybe. It's been awhile since I last rode either of those bikes. Honestly, I think the Ibis Ripmo is on par with the Rascal and more playful than the Switchblade even though it has a little more travel. In fact, I just got back on a Ripmo and loving it! Call Chris at Salt Cycles tomorrow and see what sort of deal he can get you.... I know he still has a bunch in stock and can likely get you 15-25% off. Chris: 801-943-8502

    I know you got the Rascal but any thoughts on the Alchemy Arktos or Arktos ST? Lots of good reviews, good spec on suspension. Very similar geo except for taller stand over and stack, and shorter wheelbase.

    You think the switchblade climbs better than the ripmo? I could have swore you said the ripmo climbed better.

    Hi Jason, I'm trying to decide between a Ripley and a Rascal. I'm 5'5 with longer torso than legs. I want to improve my climbing speed, as I am slower than all my friends to the top, however, I still want to be comfortable going down chunk. Which bike do you think is the better climber, and which would be better to have fun in all day, like on the Whole Enchilada?

    Really trying to decide between the rascal and the sb130 (maybe LR)

      MTB yumyum even with a 137mm rear end On the 130LR? I’m in the same boat as Tyler here and also considering Ripmo. 🤙

    • @flow2tech
      @flow2tech 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      @Tyler Head The 130 in LR mode is nothing to scoff at. Its hard to argue with Switch infinity.. Most of the enduro competitors from my main lbs use the LR in events over the sb 150 even given its climbing capabilities but not giving a ton up to the 150 on decents... One rider i know just tossed the new fox 38 on his LR.. Haven't got a ride report on that yet tho..

    How workable do you think the Rascal would be on the newer crop of all day and multi-day gnarly races like marji gesick or BC bike race? After reading about Liz Sampey and the Rascal that won the women's AZT750 this past year I'd love to demo one. I'm on the hunt for the 'one bike' that can do ok on the east coast gnar I ride, and do ok on all day epics.

      Honestly, this Rascal is in the conversation for best do everything bike available in my opinion.... more time will tell but my Ripley cant hang with the Rascal on the downs and they're equally as good everywhere besides climbing... just comes down to what you value more... I would like to test the Tallboy and Rascal back to back...

    just curious why did you not end up buying the Blade? sounds like it climbs and descends better than the Rascal.
