Another great review. What makes Jason so effective is he puts himself in place or a prospective buyer, about to spend thousands and he doesn't want to hear "they are all good", he wants to know what the actual differences in "feel" and riding characteristics between so many offerings today. Jason's memory catalog comes in handy as he compares them to one another. By the end you get a strong sense or where the bike he is reviewing falls in compared to others in its category. Well done.

@@mtbyumyum I agree with @31acruz and I’ve wondered if it’s the car sales background that does it. The brief comparisons to similar bikes are so good. And when you get nit picky about accelerating out of a corner, or needing to push the bike hard for it come alive, or getting aggressive over the handlebars - it is all very helpful for someone who doesn’t get to demo many bikes.

I always appreciate your balanced approach to bikes. For most average riders who are not racers(XC or Enduro), regardless of the travel, a bike needs to have some sort of Trailbike manners. You always keep it real. Keep up the great work.

Reviewing bikes and making everyone happy is hard. You pointed out so many things on each model. I would say definitely subjective for everyone. Talking renting yeti sb130 clr and Ibis ripmo v2 and going on trail rides. I just like Chris Cocalis's Pivot cycles company and there quality bikes. So I bought a '22 pivot switchblade xt/xtr in blue. It's a blast. Best bike I have ridden. Enjoying it so much.

I actually had both a T429 and a Firebird (previous version) as my 2 bike quiver. It was an excellent combo.
Thinking about the same combo. Love my 429 for most stuff, but really want something for long steep chunk rides.
This and the specialized stumpy evo have peaked my interest. Love the long legged trail bike category.
This feels more damp than the stumpy evo... more burly too
Love my Switchblade…on a M at 5’-10”. Feels perfect. When the ‘22 Firebird came out, it’s been the splinter in my bike mind ever since. I’m in town and might have to go visit Salt Cycle a sit on that demo and see how a small fits. I really need to demo one on my home trails. Thanks for the review. Not too many good ones out there yet on this bike.
Yep, bikes are getting longer and longer...
5’9” on a large. Took a leap of faith, but it felt great in the parking lot. Large is working out. About as nimble as my previous HD4. Personal experience, your review is spot on. 1000meter climbs all day. Absolutely shocked by this bike. Thought it was going to be a barge. This and a Ripley is my setup.

Nice, great color for hunting season! What you say makes a lot of sense. To me long travel is for going fast and geo helps with steep and slow speed technical moves. With good geo on bikes like the t429, tallboy etc, people like me who are not likely to bomb down gnarly stuff at 30 mph, can get the good geo with the amount of travel that makes the most sense on our trails..
That what I love about the new Stumpy and Element so much.. short travel but crazy good trail geo!!
Insightful review! With the modern geos I feel Specialized has it right to get rid of the S-M-L labels and get people's heads out of thinking about height with frame size as much. At 5'8" I enjoyed the Firebird in S, M, L, but for different trail types and riding. Even for racing I would swap between an M and L (or S3, S4 in an Enduro) if I could depending on the course.

Thought hard about this bike but ended up getting the new evil wreckoning. Loving it!! Would be fun to be able to demo bikes but living in a small wyoming town makes that tough. I am in-between both bikes. What made you choose the Evil over the Pivot? I'm riding bike park only in the season and chunky moab/colorado trails in off season.
Comparing two different sized bikes back to back is tricky. But Thx anyway for a great review. Would have loved to see a large FB vs a large SB from you. Or med vs med or whatever your size is. keep sizing consistent or don’t do a comparison. I just feel like sizing isn’t something that should be considered when comparing two different bikes (from a review standpoint)
Lucky I just purchased a new bike, as this would certainly have had me double thinking my choice. I ended up with Devinci Troy and it likely is the right travel for my local area / riding style! The Switchblade was a very strong consideration.

Demo'ed a Firebird a week ago. It feels very similar to my Megatower, to me. I'm 6'1" and demo'ed a large, it felt a tiny bit small for what I like, but it was fine. I only had time to do one run down national, and when I got part way through the gnarly chunky section I realized that there was something up with the fork. It was hammering back at me like there was 0 rebound. Other than that, it was a great climber, felt super solid and stiff, but definitely heavier at around 36 pounds I believe.
Been looking forward to your review since you said you'd be checking it out soon. My buddy has one and he's definitely the bomb-everything-at-top-speed kind of guy, and he loves the bike. He said if the bike got stolen or something, he'd buy it again.
Hey Jason ! I’ m on a SBv2 size M, it is perfect for me. I want to go with the FB this year but I’m struggling with de size, i’m 175 cm and my first choice was a M but know i’m a bit lost… we have steep an tight trails here, I’m wondering if a small could be better…

Great review! I was curious your take on this bike vs Switchblade. I owned a previous version Firebird in a small, and liked it, but it was just more bike than I needed. Almost went with the Trail 429 but ended up with the Switchblade because I wanted a bike that was a do it all trail bike that climbed well and could also do bike park duty. I'm between sizes small and medium, (female, 5'6", longer legs) the medium Switchblade fit and was comfortable but ultimately went with a small because I wanted a more playful feel for everyday trail riding, and it''s just perfect! So, I found your comparison between small/ medium right on the money, and consistent with my own experience..although on a different bike, haha! If I'd gone Trail 429, I would have gone with a medium. Anyways, thank you for doing these reviews as it's been much more difficult the last couple of years being able to get out and demo bikes, and it was your Switchblade review that really helped me make my decision :)

mid travel, Rocky Mountain Instinct is money. Ripmo is very good. If the speed is a little slower, Pivot Trail 429. If I could only own 1 bike, it would be hard to pass on the RM Instinct tho.

Wheel bases long but gotta try been riding saracen ariel ltx 2020 that bike is perfect for me. But yeah will switch to 27.5 as well to see how it rides I'm just afraid that the bike is to big
Oh my, my sb150 might have some competition. I'm extremely intrigued in the 2022 rallon. It was an all around winner on vital but I prefer your insight before any decisions!

Mind blown. Lol. I’m waiting for a switchblade to be delivered. I put a lot of miles on steep climbs but still go to the bike park. Still think this might be too much bike for my everyday climbs but now you got me thinking. Pivot is just killing it. Yeti has their work cut out for them for king of high end consumer bikes.
Yeah, Yeti has their work cut out for them for sure.... Pivot has even passed them for most expensive bike brand hahaha calling all dentists! lol In any case, the Firebird doesn't climb as well as the Switchblade but it's not far off and it more fun in my experience. Sorry to through a wrench in your purchase process lol good luck!!
Yeah and then you just did another review on the sb130LR that makes me want to keep my Yeti SB130LR lol. How was the front end on steep climbs on the firebird? Does it like to wander with that slack of a HTA? I find myself out of the saddle a lot on really steep climbs with the Yeti. The switchblade I demoed seemed mountain goat like on steep stuff but the yeti seems more efficient when I’m just spinning on fire roads or at least the same.

I wonder if you can get the frame onlyoption? I have a 2018 in a medium which come to think of it feels a touch unwieldy and long at high speed cornering. Might be the 800mm bars as part of it. But switching out parts to a size small 2022 Firebird frame seems interesting if there is that option.
Isn't your trail 429 more like the
enduro version with the 140
pike on it? Is that why it is so close to the Swithblade?
I have a chromag rootdown and am thinking I should just go full enduro for my other bike so there is no overlap. Thinking, this, Wreckening or rail 29. Thinking about an over forked offerikg ir switchblade as well

Interesting take. I have SB150, looking for a shorter travel bike for everyday trails. I tried a medium 429 and didn’t love it. Maybe because it was a medium and felt small. Also rode it in Sedona which maybe was a contributing factor.
I fit better on the M T429.... small was too small. I'm 5'8"
I am 5’10 with a long torso and the medium felt small. It was all they had so I had to make do ;).
I'm 5'8" and loved the medium 429 for the nimbleness, but I was surprised at how short the reach felt compared to some of my older mediums ('16 Stumpie, '14 Enduro). The cockpit surprisingly matches my medium '17 SB6 in feel.
Just discovered you last night as I was researching mountain biking in Utah for an April trip I'm planning out there. You're a ripper Jason! I would love to ride with you when I come out.. The plan is to stay in Draper and ride Corner Canyon trails. Do you ever team up with tourists? Or do you have to be a TH-cam celebrity? I promise I'm a better rider than BKXC. 🤪

I'm 5'11 about 220lbs, kind of in between frame sizes..... do I go with the smaller frame where I'm at the upper limit of the height range, or go with a bigger frame where my height is ranged in the lower middle range? But mostly what kind of differences in feel do you get riding a smaller size vs a larger size frame?
@MTB yumyum If I'm 6'1 and want to ride this bike, a large would be my first choice but would a Medium work?

Great review. Some reviews have said the opposite (i.e., this version of the firebird lost its trail characteristics) but I think that shows there is a lot to consider here - sizing, riding style, etc. Demoed both Trail 429 and switchblade and ended up on the switchblade (love it!). I think the Pivot sizing is different between models depending on your preference. I’m 5’10” and a large trail 429 was a bit too big for me and the medium was a better fit but maybe a bit small. The medium switchblade was way too small for me but the large was perfect. Would be curious to try a medium firebird for kicks and giggles though I don’t think I need that much bike. Recently put a coil out back on the switchblade and I think it has made it even a better bike.
Large Switchblade has a 470cm reach. Medium Firebird has a reach of 468cm
I have a full custom top to bottom XTR SB150….. yep I never never ride it. SB100 is my workhorse…. Why? SB150 is too specific. Now I want a Firebird.
Mind if I ask which coil shock you specced on the switchnlade?

I want a bike that walks the line between the 429 and Firebird, so the Switchblade would be the bike for me.
I’m on the current switchblade size medium and I’m also 5’8, I think I really want this firebird now. I rode a medium recently but need to try the small I’m thinking.
The medium Firebird is crazy big... same size as a Large Switchblade... look at the reach numbers. I would have never gone w a Large Switchblade....

Does the firebird better than the sb150? How about weight difference?
For you skiers, I think there might be some general parallels. In general, my best experiences on skis have been in the lower 90 waist (Trail 429) and the 108 and above (Firebird.) The Switchblade is that middle waist that has become so popular, but generally does many things ok.
The crazy thing is how capable the new T429 is..... very cool bike!
@@mtbyumyum Right? I tried it in both Fit4 34 and the Grip2 36 and it was awesome. Putting the 36 on there definitely made the do-stupid-things window bigger. But I’d probably end up with the Evol/34 version.

Try a 38 on a Switchblade. It has made an interesting difference for Deer Valley and Corner Canyon.

Interesting review... I have a 2020 sb150, which is a great bike in the rough and fast. Which I bought partly on the basis of your review of the bike 😀. I ride a size medium and I think the fit is good. I'm 175cm/70kg. The yeti has a 460 reach, Vs a pivot firebird medium 470... Not sure I would want to go for a bigger reach, would the bike feel nimble? ...
Do you have any thoughts about the differences between the two? From your comments, it seems you think firebird a better climber, but maybe yeti still a bit more stable in rough stuff? Also, do you think your impression would have been different re playful Vs stability with the coil shock on the bike? I guess my question is about- what are the gains, Vs compromises, with this bike vs sb150... Vs altitude?
Yeah, I think the yeti would feel more maneuverable if I were on a size small.

What are your thoughts on climbing on this vs a ripmo? I currently have a ripmo and an altitude (a 21). I love everything about the altitude, i just wish i could have a little more effiecientcy while climbing.
Firebird didn't feel as efficient as the Ripmo... both are better than the Altitude. I'll talk more about this in the live stream
I have a 2022 Firebird coil XT/XTR with the Reynolds wheels. A great choice for park.I rode it at Trestle. I also ride it on the trails in Pacifica. I find the same experience you did. My only gripe is my butt hitting the rear wheel a few times since I bought it. It seems to happen on rough sections of the trail. Any idea if it’s the wrong size body position or too stiff of a spring? 6’2” on a Large and 260 lbs on a 700 LB spring. Thanks!
William, I’m about your size and about to pull the trigger on a new FB. Can’t decide between the air or coil. Any regrets?
@@sunglassrob7752 Air and coil tech these days is so good you can’t go wrong with either. I would chat with the factory about compression and rebound settings. Those guys are great. I ended up getting a 600 LB spring which works well. The only minus about the Firebird the faster you push it on the trails the better the bike shines. Makes you wanna ride fast. It’s very stiff. No regrets. It’s like having a DH you can pedal uphill.
Thats crazy reach compared to my 2019 medium Norco Sight 29er has a 427 😂. And a 430 chainstay. If I get that bike. I’d need a really short stem. Fyi, Im 5’8” too

Yep, it's getting bonkers... If you're not already familiar, I owned the Pivot Switchblade in size medium. The Medium Firebird is 2mm shorter reach than the size large Switchblade and I even demo'd the small switchblade for a week before buying the size M. Nothing to say about the 38... felt good but beyond that I would need to ride it more and I wasn't overly focused on that during my ride. Sorry I can't be more help. For a big bike that you're not concerned too much about weight, I'd personally go 38 or Zeb...
I really wish we would get away from sm, med, large, and xl for bike size. I am 5'10" but have the torso of a person that is 6'2". The large feels perfect. Your legs look quite a bit longer and i have friends that are taller but torsos are way shorter. They should be on a medium. Sizing should be done with a bike fitter to get your ideas of how you fit on a bike.
How did the Firebird compare to the RM Altitude?
How does the suspension linkage feel compared to the older DW link. I have an older version of the Mach6 with the high mounted shock and although surprised that changes it I also know they changed for a reason. Would just like to hear your input.
Feels like it tracks the ground better... this is across the board.... on the new Switchblade and Trail 429. All 3 bikes feel more damp and just stick to the ground so well.
@@mtbyumyum Thank you, I’ve been intrigued by their change and knew there had to be a logical reason of course. I think I’ll demo one of the newer versions, my wallet will probably not like me much when I do I have a feeling haha.

Thoughts on this as a “do it all” bike? For someone that rides everything from trail to bike park?
You would really have to have an emphasis on the higher speed stuff and how often you ride. This could be my only bike If I only rode 1-2 times a week and frequently rode bike parks (4-10x per year) or at least more gnarly higher speed stuff.... This new Firebird is a lot of fun!

Hello I am looking for the Pivot firebirde 2022. The problem is that in France the Pivot dealers do that the whole bike and I would need this amazing frame kit! Did you know if in America Pivot sells its frame kit ?

I'm confused... You're calling Pivots flagship "enduro" bike a long travel trail bike and saying it's not all that stable at speed compared to other enduro bikes from SC and Yeti (a yeti on 27.5 wheels). Here I am... Bought a 2020 Switchblade in Oregon, rode it hard all over the PNW yet nothing all that steep outside of very few lift serve zones so it rode most things well. Now living in New Zealand, with the steepest of steep NZ riding out my backdoor. I'm watching your review to see if a new Firebird could give me the stability and confidence in the new land gnar grade 6 tracks. Sounds like the Firebird in your opinion still isn't "enduro" enough for what I'm after or where they positioned it? Although you didn't ride it on proper steep terrain so maybe your review and opinion is inconclusive? And Firebird is still showing up as an EWS weapon.

Unfortunately I didn't get a chance to film a review video before the snow fell here in Draper, Utah. I will talk a lot about this bike tomorrow evening in the live stream here on youtube. I got 3 rides on the Element. I filmed one of the days and sort of did a ride vlog thing... not sure what I'm going to do with the footage.

How does it compare to the Altitude Jason? Not sure whst you mesn by 'it's more accessible'
Climbs better than the Altitude. Accessible meaning, you can access the abilities or the way the bike rides at lower speeds... you don't have to be going super fast to have fun on the bike...

Thanks! No, Salt Cycles is for sure still in business... They take the week between Christmas and New Years off... their mechanics and staff work their butts off all year and this is a little break for them to spend time w family during the holidays and "slower" season for bikes during the winter. Would you still buy the firebird if you own Trail 429 instead of the NEW switchblade? I own old Trail 429 v2.
Yeah, I think the current Firebird is a special bike.... they come around every so often and it's better in my experience than the current or previous Switchblade as a second bike to your t429.... that said, as an only bike, the current Switchblade is pretty neat if you need longer travel... good luck!
Did you just set the suspension up to Pivots reccomendation?
Good question. Pivot rec are not good at all.

Can’t help myself but listening to this review it seems to me as if you have picked the wrong size.
Otherwise I can‘t explain why you keep saying „a trail bike“ or why you saying it is not as capable or stable Megatower or a SB150.
