Sure what he is doing so great but Lula is saying that US is involved on a plan to replace him. It could be because of the oil found on Brazilian shores that could make Brazil the 3rd biggest oil producer in the world. Lula (the left) would not privatize the Brazilian oil company but the right will.
Easy to see US intentions if you notice how US cares about Venezuala's people but don't care much about people with bad dictators in Africa. Note the Venezuela has the biggest oil reserve in the world.

@@nonozera You don't have to even invoke oil. The US has a documented history of over a century of opposing any South or Central American government that doesn't put the interests of American corporations first.
It's no accident that mainstream American publications talked about how Bolsonaro was someone the US could 'work with,' and ignored his obvious fascist rhetoric.
They were fine with Lula too, because Lula was good for everyone in Brazil - the poor and business alike. But they certainly have no problem with a plot to jail him as long as the new government is pro-corporate.

Lula presided over corruption schemes, everyone knows it and it gets worse: he was the most important political ally of the huge left-wing Colombian Coke dealers known as FARCs, and Brazil's murder numbers are off the charts for many decades because of drug territorial disputes. Lula didn't help Brazil, he alienated and hurt it. And by the way most people were disgusted with his party's attemptt to give little children sex and homosexual education. It is not like Lula is considered a great politician only in the benefic sense proposed.

@ He's just a Judge that with other judges and prosecutors destroyed the largest corruption network there ever was in Brazil. Some of the companies they targeted were involved in corruption for 5 decades, at least. Our congress has greatly improved since this happened and with an interpretation of constitutional law by the Supreme Court stating that corporations could not donate to politicians - for the first time in my life, I'm seeing congress do what the people want and that's good because if Bolsonaro had congress in his hands like all the former presidents had it would be a disaster. They never claimed to be heroes or deities like Greenwald mentioned - the population claimed them to be heroes. Also, what Greenwald told about the "elites" - BTW, in Brazil he's part of what he claims to be the elite - that they didn't want to see the poor people getting better is a complete lie - only a few, very few people, complained about it. One thing you must understand is that this was only possible because the population pressed the Supreme Court (in Brazil they do more than Constitutional Law) and Congress to let the investigations run. Also, a compliment is deserved to Dilma Roussef, who was the president after Lula, because, even thought many people in her party wanted her to stop the investigations, she let prosecutors and police do their job.
Greenwald is married to a Congressman from PSOL - a party that, though very much honest and with very good congresspeople, still supports Lula and PT. I hope the center-left parties stop this support and run their own campaigns. So you know, PT destroyed many center-left leaders that could threaten them in an election to guarantee they're the only ones ... former members call them leninists.

They also resented the fact that other people as never before were making money and acquiring a status that only that hundreds year old elite had held till now. Glenn's/Intercept's work on this case is a blessing for our country. What he is doing has/will have a strong impact on Brazil's political history!
Glenn is amazingly articulate, intelligent, insightful and well informed.
Brazilian ex-Pres. Lula was probably the best president we had so far.
Lula would win the 2018 election, no one doubts that. Lula would continue his visionary policies to eliminate social/economic inequality in Brazil, much like China's Xi Jinping or Russia's Putin, the 2 most powerful BRICS members.
Under Lula Brazil grew economically, increased trade with China, which has been for several years the main trade partner for our country. All these facts were considered by the U.S. Gov. (the Deep State) a huge "problem" for the U.S. financial hegemony.
The BRICS growing strength and the BRICS bank founded in 2014 would become a huge hindrance to the present U.S. world financial control with the dollar as a world trade AND reserve currency.
"They" had to derail Lula's third term after his 2000-2008 two terms.
The "plan" concocted from Obama's days and finished (sort of) now, under Trump, has succeeded.
Brazil has now an amazingly unprepared president, a U.S. idiotic puppet.
The"plan" to get Lula out of 2018 presidential election worked, all was going well for the evil "operation derail Brazil".
But then... boom! Someone leaked a huge amount of audio and text exchange between the then judge Moro and the federal prosecutor Deltan Dallagnol during the fake Lula’s prosecution, the leaks are now being published by Glenn Greenwald/The Intercept. Finally, the truth is coming out to light.
The operation "dismantle the BRICS" had 3 main fronts, first Russia, with the Ukraine operation, Nato pressure at Russia's borders, Russia demonization during and after Trump’s election and then the heavy sanctions on Russia.
More recently came the U.S. came up with the growing on China, the Huawei case, etc, etc.
Now, Brazil is going down, economically, socially, politically.
All successfully orchestrated in Wash. DC.
After 911, connecting the dots has become a vast and time-consuming job for anyone who wants to know what is going on in the geopolitical world arena.
The geopolitical world nightmare has gone beyond a 3D chess game, dense, complex and yet easy to understand for anyone with lots of time to research, I mean hours every day starting from the Bush Jr. era.
The world has become indeed an interesting arena in the worst sense possible. Interesting as in a well scripted/directed/acted horror movie.
Brazil is out of the way for Washington, China and Russia are and will be a whole different game for the sick behavior of the U.S. and its minions, Brazil included now.
Brazilian government now dances accordingly to U.S. Gov. music. Xi and Putin have to go on their struggle against the U.S. desperate job of saving the crumbling empire. Xi and Putin are very well prepared.
Hopefully, the world will see better days, and that can only happen after the evil empire cedes its place to mineral resources rich Russia and cash/technology-rich China.
Putin has been doing an excellent job since coming to power after Boris Yeltsin, alternating the Presidency with his friend Dmitry Medvedev.
In China, the monolithic and very efficient one-party system can't be messed up by any U.S. Think Tank "operation".
The world peace and prosperity depend on China and Russia now and most probably they will succeed. The U.S. population benefit from the empire fall.
As in the phrase attributed to Winston Churchill:
"You can fool all the people some of the time, and some of the people all the time, but you cannot fool all the people all the time."
The U.S. has been fooling the whole world since Bretton Woods, but its time is up.

I might be wrong, I do not follow that much Brazil, because I am Portuguese and always think it sucks, but during Lula tenure people went after some oligarchs that were highly abusive of the economy, that might have triggered that wave of hate that GG is talking about, there there justice had to be done because of the interrupted dynastic abuse and complete social disregard typical of the Latin culture, in fact seen all over South America, and Mexico. All people I had the chance to talk to were adamant Brazil was more peaceful under Lula. Now it appears the Soccer and the Olympics are over, and so the whip is out again. Brazil lost a lot of money, and so value, and so heads had to roll, the country needed a scapegoat. That might be the economic hidden reason behind the blaming and shaming we see in Lula wrong imprisonment, because everyone said if anything was done, was in his back, and he did not have a chance of being responsible.

In 1887, Lord Acton wrote to Bishop Mandell Creighton this famous remarque that” Power tends to corrupt and absolute power corrupts absolutely” it is a fact that this is proven year after year in every circles of human activities, be in businesses, law or politics, but specially in politics. This is the reason why the all system of so called modern democracy has to be looked into very seriously. Nobody should be allowed to be in a position of authority without strict accountability and mandatory revocation from the public itself, a system which was in existence in the past even with the Indian populations of North America. We better learn from out history, not doing so makes us perfect idiots ready to be victimised by a system systematically open to corruption.
