The second story: as a first time mom I made it clear that me or my hubby will not ask more than once for our baby back. People are really bold because if you refuse you are running the risk of a mom or dad getting physical in order to have their child back. I highly suggest not doing that.

She wouldn't react that way if he reacted to the situation at all. He sees she is struggling with his mom but wont step in to help... I feel like we would get more of a JNMIL story if his wife was writing this post...

Can we please stop referring to not wearing clothes in places we have an expectation of privacy as indecent. If you are in your home or in a part of your property that is screened for privacy how is not wearing anything indecent, someone has to go out of their way to violate your privacy but somehow you are the one in the wrong? This is a huge example of bad thought programming, we need to address this.

I swear I've heard the wife's side of the second story! And if I'm correct, there was also a lot of stuff MIL was doing when the husband wasn't around, so he was taking his wife's reactions out of context of the full situation. But regardless, a mom shouldn't have to "ask nicely" for her baby back. If mama says to hand over her baby, then hand over the damn baby.

    • @linda-0587

    • @survivedandthriving

I gotta say whenever Person A has a disproportionate reaction* to Person B/Person B's behaviour, my first thought is to ask 'what was it that Person B has been doing to Person A?'
Too often, Person B (the bully) pokes, and pokes, and pokes at Person A all the while Person A tries to deal with the situation constructively, quietly, reasonably, and appropriately. But Person B keeps poking and poking and poking until Person A finally loses it and responds in a (supposedly) 'too big' way. And they Person B points to Person A with indignation and anger that Person A could treat them (Person B) so badly. And everyone, having only seen the 'too big' response, rallies around in defence of Person B against Person A. And then Person A gets bullied by the group too.
So, yeah, having seen this pattern too many times, and having been in Person A's shoes too many times, whenever I see a Person A give a 'too big' response, my first thought is 'what has Person B been doing'?
*one that seems out of character for Person A or which genuinely seems too big for the situation at hand, as opposed to Person A having a pattern of reacting that way anyway no matter the situation.

What we have here is the beginning of what I suspect would become some pretty horrific conditioning behaviour. How long before "My dog thinks you're ugly" becomes "Even my dog thinks you're ugly, you should be grateful I even bother with you"?
OP stated she has self esteem issues. I don't think this situation was a coincidence. Based on that story, I have the opinion the "Boyfriend" sounds very predatory. I got my fair share of baby cuddles and even had a scare when she threw up after her feed on me. The mum in question even let me in the room for her change and re feed because I was terrified. I handed her right over because I was shaking and scared of her chocking or suffocating herself but I did all the right moves and just had an apparently normal scare. I even got cuddles again after that. As soon as she started fussing I'd ask if she was hungry or just being fussy. I wouldn't even imagine withholding her from her mum. If my sister's chores didn't get done because she went out with her friends instead, it was *my* responsibility to do them on top of my own chores. But if *my* chores didn't get done because I legitimately wasn't feeling well, I was getting yelled at for being "lazy" and "irresponsible". When my sister dropped out of school at 16, it was perfectly okay. But if I were to do that, I'd be digging my own future grave. When my sister also started drinking at 16, "she was just being young and adventurous". If that were me, I'd be the irresponsible and rebellious twit. (Btw I'm 4 years older than my sister; she's 21 now and I'm 25). I also have autism, dyslexia and ADHD so school was very difficult for me, but whenever I didn't understand a certain subject (math was my weakest subject, partially due to my autism and partially due to my dyslexia and ADHD), I was always getting yelled at and told that "I just didn't wanna do the work because I'm lazy" (I was diagnosed with all 3 disorders at 6 years old, so my mom's known for most of life that I have them). It sucks that the younger siblings always get away with everything (oh and my sister doesn't have any disabilities, so I have a pretty good idea what my mother probably resented me for other than my sister being younger).

I got my ODE Honors Society award when I graduated and I felt proud of the hard work I put into for my Economics minor, cords and all, but when my brother was in high school, he got to graduate despite nearly failing and only got to wear the cords for an advanced class he took because my parents held his hand all the way through.

I've finished with a first draft of a book, and I'm going to have a piece of writing published this month in a city almanac magazine. God the edit of the second story is hilarious! Of course this guy wouldn't listen to the rightful anger/ annoyance of people and tell them to calm down. Anger is an emotion like any other and being angry doesn't mean that someone's viewpoint is invalid. Also, how does he know the whole situation to automatically take his mum's side? He's not there to see why his wife gets so angry so to immediately side against her is odd imo.

Story One: unfortunately, depending on where you live there might not be anything you can do if they're on their property just peering over and some places might even stick it to you for public indecency (some places having rules about not being "indecent" even through windows). Always check those local laws on what is and isn't enforceable, that would suck to report the neighbor and then be the one scolded by some cop. Same way some criminals break in your house and you have little to no legal standing to defend yourself, you have to flee... 🤦‍♀️

    • @RiveroftheWither

They have privacy fencing that you have to go out of your way to look over. That does not fall under public indecency and does in fact implicate the neighbor as a peeping Tom.

I had a MiL "who just wanted to help out" with my new born son.
The reality was the fact I was rarely ALLOWED to hold my son and try bonding with him. I was called names and asked what my problem was, while completely ignoring my feelings after I clearly told them what was bothering me. Then they tried gaslighting me by saying I was just being overly sensitive due to hormones.
    Thankfully they are ex's.
I can understand where the new Mom is coming from. It hurts to watch someone else "stealing" (that's what it feels like) your bonding time. Face it, babys eat, sleep, and go to the bathroom. If the grandmother is always feeding & changing the baby, then grandma is stealing that awake time when mom and baby should be bonding.

(Assuming this wasnt discussed previously) Instead of explaining that using that word toward her and that having that attitude is a BIG no-no, she instead decided to drop an ENTIRE pot of sauce on the floor, damaging and probably ruining a rug. She decided that when confronted with hurtful words she would resort to property damage. That's a huge overreaction imo. Though also the fact that the guy didn't clean it up immediately after it happened shows two things: 1) he is willing to die on that hill instead of trying to mend an obvious emotional wound he created with his words.
    2) the rug wasn't *that* important to him
