CLEANING FDM 3D PRINT - RESIN VS WOOD FILLER

  • My buddy from @toysontap5189 gave me his Astron figure to paint.
Before I could paint Astron, I needed to clean the FDM print. I haven't really done this before so I thought this would be a great test to see if it's easier to clean up with UV resin or wood filler.
My experiment comparing UV resin and wood filler for FDM print cleanup was quite the learning experience, even if both methods had their pros and cons. While I can't tell you definitively which is "better" since it depends on personal preference and the project, I can share some takeaways based on what I experienced:
    Similarities:
Both methods require significant sanding, so get ready for some elbow grease!
Both can achieve a smooth finish with enough effort.
    Differences:
    UV resin:
Can be trickier to work with due to its quick curing time and needing a UV light.
May generate fumes and require additional safety precautions.
Can create extremely smooth finishes with proper curing and sanding.
    Wood filler:
Easier to apply but can be lumpy before sanding.
Requires a little longer drying times between sanding sessions.
May not achieve the same level of smoothness as UV resin.
    Final thoughts:
I found both methods effective and achieved a cool final result with your painted and weathered Astron figure! Ultimately, the choice between UV resin and wood filler will depend on your priorities. Personally I found the wood filler to be a little more work and a bit harder to work with. The resin brushed on easily and cures fast but can easily fill in fine detail if you're not careful.
In the end, both methods can lead to stunning results with enough practice and patience.
The final result looked pretty cool after I was able to paint and weather the figure.

    Happy New Year 2024!
The carvings are as delicate and careful as Michelangelo's, and the battle paint is cool, so I respect it. I learned a lot about model making, painting, etc.😃

There's a wood filler with a lacquer base, brown color. called Dap I think.

A buddy of mine uses bondo like you would use on a car but I think it’s kinda stinky…

Yes Bondo does smell . The plastic wood DAP uses solvents as well, so it's a bit stinky too.@@DRToysCreations

As I understand it, there is a way to smooth the surface of FDM prints using Acetone vapour in a sealed container. It is a mild form of attack, but I've seen people go from almost 'pixel' like prints to a smooth finish.

@@DRToysCreationsAceton only works with ABS plastic, a lot of FDM is instead done with PLA. ABS produces toxic fumes while printing and needs the printer to be in an enclosure, so not necessarily fun also.
