Deciding Whether Or Not To Resin Print: Is It Worth It?

- After building a bot completely from wood my buddy suggested we make one from CAD and resin 3D print a final part. The question is, was it worth it to resin print this bot or is it a total pain?
I came up with a new bot design and he rebuilt the robot in CAD. We looked it over together and did a few edits then printed it out on my Anycubic 3D printer. With tons of sanding and a cool paint job the end result worked out pretty nice.
I hope you enjoy this resin 3D printed Robot build!
Thanks for visiting DR Toys, and as always...

Hollowing out a resin builds DOES use less material but it doesn't decrease the print time. The UV light cures each layer so if the layer is big or small it doesn't effect the print time.
I love the quality of a resin print but there is something magical about hand making it out of reusable materials. I kind of prefer watching the latter.
Keep up the great work Doc!
That makes perfect sense. Thanks 😃
I m with ya, there’s something so special about making something with your hands.
Wow those colors..that tone of red and the gold are so good
Thanks so much!
This robot looked fantastic!
Thanks
Looks great! I'm a huge fan of 3D printing, but sanding takes a looong time. Well done!
Sooooo long! lol
Thank you very much!
I love both robots! That red paint is amazing. You must have done an awesome sanding job, because It looks like he's made of metal, very nice shine. Really enjoyed both of these builds!
Thank you so much 😀
Fantastic build 👏.
Thank you! 👍
I love that retro deign , it looks like a robot you'd see in comic books in the 50s and 60s
Thanks! I think I wanna make one more so I have a set of three. : )
Love it! Your videos always make me want to make things
I love to hear that because that’s one of my main goals for my channel. I want people to not be afraid to try.😃
The robot looks amazing 😊😊😊
Thanks!
@@DRToysCreations you are welcome 🤗
I absolutely LOVE this build/print project & the duo is just awesome. Keep up the amazing work.
Thanks 🙏
Love how this guy turned out. Your builds and videos are inspirational.
Thanks so much! 😃
Otro hermoso robot para la colección!
Thanks😃
Another great build! I don't care what you use to build robots, I just like seeing new robots.
Have you ever considered making a robot like what was shown in old Warner Bros. cartoons or in the Paramount Superman cartoon "The Mechanical Monsters"? Those were always some of my favorites.
I wasn't familiar with that cartoon but he is really cool!
The printer settings are really dialed in to me! Looks great
I lost a part last night because the temperature in my room dropped to 67 degrees. Man these things are finicky!😬
@@DRToysCreations I got a resin heater from Amazon that sits inside the printer and keeps the resin the right temperature throughout the night. Works like a dream
These bots are fantastic Dave. Got some very cool Retro vibes.
Thanks. Definitely going for a vintage Japanese tin toy vibe!😃
I appreciate how you kindly approach the topic of of 3D Printing, knowing how some people will react. Between the highly toxic nature of the materials, learning curve, and the prohibitive cost of entry for a great many creatives, your choice of words was sensible and sensitive to the community. Regarding the build, Great job! Love both of these, and the retro/iron giant vibes the give off. Beautiful colors as well.
Also, that track playing over the glamour shot at the end was decent.
I always enjoy your videos and hope to be in a position to build, and help support content creators such as yourself, some day when I graduate from college and have income again. I really like the promotion of creative work, it’s fun, good exercise for one’s brain and fine motor skills, not to mention a great balm for one’s mental well being. Thanks for doing what you do.
A grateful observer.
Thank you for your thoughtful comment.
I think sometimes people forget that I’m just a guy having fun trying new stuff. I’m not an expert at any of this stuff that I do but I do put my heart into every project simply because I love making. I literally started my channel with the idea of encouraging people to not be afraid to try new things. I really appreciate you and the amazing community out there that have been so nice and supportive of what I’m doing and message like this fills my tank!😃
Thank you!
Robot 13 looks cool like the Iron Giant.👍 The dry brushing on the red body is also nice. I love the robots you make. I'll try my best to make one too.
I really like the red and gold colors scheme.
Thanks for always watching, it means a lot to me!❤️
the two of them together give me rock em sock em vibes, you may need to make a yellow boxing ring for them to play in
Love that!😅
It looks great. The old fashioned way is more my style.
I was definitely going for a vintage Japanese tin you vibe. 😃
For most people whether or not to resin print isnt a question. Kitbashing is great for creating custom things that are completely unique, 3d printing is for making things that other people have designed. Not everyone has the skill or time to scratch build something cool.
I kitbash stl files and then print them for custom minis
True, and there’s something magical about building something with your own two hands!😃
Thanks.
3D Printing can be fun and it can yield gribblies you may not be able to find in other places. I like to think it's a great way to add to a kitbash rather than completely overtake it, but either way it was a great video thank you!
I’m working on a pretty big project in the background that I think I will do some 3D printed gribblies because I have to repeat them three times. Just seems like a smart way to do it.😃
Looks great! The red one looks poseable, like it can move it's limbs. Is it able to?
The Red a Blue Bot are both possible.😃
I am currently working on a a way to make these available so stay tuned.
Thanks
My husband just upgraded his resin printer. He's been printing terrain for his newest game he created. I haven't printed anything yet on the new printer. I'm a buy the file and print and paint kinda gal. (For now) I'm still trying to master the filament printer. 😬 I will always love scratch building/kit bashing. But there's absolutely an element of fun with 3D printers in your toolbox. Thanks for sharing all you do! It turned out great!
You are so welcome! Thanks for watching!
I see no problem with using the 3-D printer, it's cool for some builds and could help you out with other builds when you can't quite find the right parts you need for scratch builds. Plus when you do your scratch build you can then reproduce it again if you ever want to make a copy for someone, and not have to scrounge up hard to find parts. Plus like your Big Mac guy you built and your Mario on the plant you could do like a hard version of the burger box or the drink cover and not have to worry about it getting damaged over time.
And this little robot 🤖 came out totally awesome. Super Cool 😎 👍👍👍
Totally agree.
Thanks so much!
My primer of choice is army painter color primer skeleton, is a good flesh base for minis. I love watching 3d printing,i wish it was a little more economical. But i love these little robots, would be cool to see the over complicated 90s version.
Thanks
Another crackin' shirt DAVE.
My mom made it for me! 😃
Liar.
@@9daywonda ? The Marvel shirt, my mom 100% made it for me. The tee was from Meow Wolf Denver.
@@DRToysCreations OK I believe you, honest.
You could try a rubbing compound to get the overspray off next time
Great idea, thanks.
Awesome! This would print on a FDM printer just fine. Printing ABS or ASA and then smoothing it with aceton wil get about the same result as this.
I have been watching videos of the new Bamboo printers and they look pretty amazing! I just don’t know anyone with an FDM close to me.
I think it would look great with copper pipe as well!
Oh totally! Copper would be great!
Hopefully thieves wouldn’t strip him!😅
3D printing is just another tool. I think the important part is doing the design work. If the design is something you like enough to make multiple copies of, then you could work with your buddy to design something that you would be able to cast in urethane, which would save on a lot of the cleanup work for each robot.
💯.
This is really cool. Will the files be made available?
So we are actually looking to produce these as an actual molded toy so stay tuned.😃
@@DRToysCreations Awesome! I was hoping to print it myself and would be willing to purchase the files.
Great work Dave! The resin robot looks good and the additional height adds to the look of it. Thanks for sharing this.
Thanks 👍
I love these "knuckle-draggers". Chonk-Bots are cool, and these have just the right balance between cartoon and retro sci-fi vibes.
The widespread fear and loathing toward 3D printing is something I don't fully agree with either... It is a tool that requires skill and forethought to master and I'm sure you get a lot out of using it for prototyping / short-run sale items and just thinking / designing differently. It doesn't take the skill out of model-making any more than a limited resin garage kit figure model does and modellers love those... I imagine pipe-chomping 'trad-dads' in the 1960s were equally dismissive of their children's styrene kits because they built models from balsa wood when they were young. Although there are people who buy ready made STLs rather than design their own but, 'hey'... Every modeller is differently motivated / differently able.
I totally agree! I remember when the Wacom first came out and being in Illustration and Graphic Design, that many people were hesitant and thought it was a cheat!😃
A tools a tool and you still need skill and understanding of simple principles of design.
Thanks so much!
Maybe some gold leaf from Michael's?
Yeah, someone else mentioned that too, funny thing is I have gold leaf and the glue but that thought never crossed my mind.😅🤦
Thanks
That was pretty cool..i have a friend who has a 3d printer, can we download those files? If so where can we get them?
Thanks so much. So I don’t have the file available as of now but I am working on quotes now to get them tooled up and molded.
@@DRToysCreations
Nice...hope you get them going.
Did you get that shirt at Goodwill, too?
So the Marvel shirt my mom made for me and the tee was from Meow Wolf Denver. 😃
@@DRToysCreations OK, then.
Gold leaf...
Oh, wow! I didn’t even think of that! In fact I have gold leaf and the adhesive.🤦
Genius idea! Thanks 😃
Thanks

Get ready for the "printing is cheating" people 😂
😂
I’m just a guy having fun making stuff!😂
Really cool. Color is off, too bright. Needs to be a bluer red. That looks too Chinese.
Hm, I kinda like the bright red, was going for a vintage Japanese tin toy look. I can totally see the red you’re thinking and I think that too could look cool.😃
And hanks.
@@DRToysCreations Ha. Well, it's your project, so ultimately you are correct.
Yes. you have captured the tin toy feel. But you'll have to make some transfers with all sorts of fake 3d details and fill every blank surface to fully pull it off.
I always enjoy your videos, but the whole love affair with 3D printing leaves me cold. Personally, I think 3D printing has enough fanboys that it doesn't need my contribution. I've stopped following a number of artists, such as Kathy Millatt, due to their over-reliance on 3D printing. I just find it uninteresting, especially when it seems like 75% of the process is mucking around getting something usable. If it's something I can't even attempt to make without an outlay of thousands of dollars and a lot of time, then it doesn't interest me.
I totally see your point. For me I love to build something from scratch because it totally amazing to see what I can build with my hands.
As far as 3D printing goes it’s not relaxing or enjoyable but more of a tool for my 1 M Robots.
Rest assured I still got plenty of cool builds bouncing around in my head just waiting to be built from scratch!😅
Thanks
