Can't speak about Max Hay but there's also problem with that, being a youtuber/influencer is way more popular nowadays so there's lots of ppl looking for their channel niche e.g. blender tutorials are one of them so ppl with barely any experience starts teaching others mostly by copying other tutorials who also copy other tutorials and that way sometimes spreading bad workflows and bad habits often by explaining things not how it actually is or how it works. But it's just the nature of youtube itself, if there's demand there will be all kinds of people, but if you look at other communities that are harder to access e.g. expensive software such as 3ds Max and Foundry Nuke or steep learning curve like SideFX Houdini then there will be way less of tutors/gurus but the quality lightyears ahead pretty much like straight out of top level VFX house. So yeah the new generation of blender youtubers are going to change the industry, they will attract and make new artists also as a result they will definitely place the old-school and skilled CG people into a higher level based on the standards. But good thing that it's easy to spot those kind of fake gurus and not only in Blender, literally in any industry, it's usually some teenager or young adult in a professional lighting setup shouting "What's up guys, it's ya boy _____, today we're going to learn how to _____ so lets get goooooinnnn!" also likely has thumbnail with a shocked face :D

By the way I agree, the blender community in particular, due to the accessibility to the program will always be full of the most disparate kind of "teachers". I still believe it's a good thing, the more material you have to learn from, the better. Time will tell, maybe I'll change my mind. Of course tho, the risk to learn too many bad habits is higher, but over time you learn to discern influencers from teachers (see shocked face ahah). In this particular case what I meant was more like, today's blender youtubers like Max go with a fresh approach, really straight to the point teaching you what you actually wanna learn. Maybe they sacrifice a bit of the technical aspect, but if you're really interested in that aspect there are already old tutorials out there, you mix the two types and everyone's happy 😁
Sorry but next level of what? Of working with pre-downloaded assets?,or using materials downloaded from the net, addons that work automatically, Pre-set lighting systems.? Because this i see on youtube. I don't know how artistic there is in that. This generation is doing the same stuff they do for music, working on things that are already done by putting only technique and zero personal art. Is not good in my opinion. IF we are talking about stuff for "work" ok it can go, but if we are talking about art, rendering and 3d, this is not artistic. If we don't learn art and just ASSEMBLY and use other people's stuff, we have nothing in our hands, only technical knowledge. The next level Will be using a soft that does ALL the work by itself. I agree on pretty much everything you said, but not everyone aims to actually work in the industry as a professional, many just want to make art and have fun. This kind of tutorials allow you to learn stuff and create something in a reasonably short amount of time, and that's perfect for that category of people I'm talking about. It's not really up to me to decide what's better, I just think a huge amount of people don't need super technical tutorials on modeling a spaceship from start to finish for game/film production. TH-cam lacks of short and straightforward tutorials on how to make quick and effective stuff to just make art and have fun right now, and channels like Max's one are filling that void imho.
7:05 I assume it's been a while and people have already found out, but my favourite way for selecting many random things is to use the select random option, set it to a lower probability, then hit ctrl + L to select the full objects! 3 seconds for the same effect. And for the roof, you could use select coplanar to quickly re-assign the materials!

PLEASE show us how to do those skies and clouds. I've been looking for a good tutorial for so long and yours came out looking brilliant. Also would love to hear more about volumetrics. This would make a great series going through the making one of these scenes from composition to modeling to lighting etc. Keep up the good work!!

For some reason I cannot get my image texture to appear on my buildings... I follow the steps to a T but there must be something I am missing. I have my image texture in, I have cube projected and such, but no matter what my buildings remain the default color even though I am working on the "wall" shader like you. I have even removed all other shaders in my scene to ensure nothing can be covering it up. Blender 3.4 btw Edit: I solved it. In my "UV Maps" in "Object Data Properties" I had several UV Maps for my buildings, and the one I was working on was hidden with the default blank one on top set to visible. I think I accidentally duped it at some point causing me to see 0 changes as I unwrapped and such because the map was hidden.
@@angeloyanke150 maybe a bit random, but maybe u can help me with an other issue, if u watch my newest short (where optimus dances) the bones of the arms r moving the wheels of his legs as well and i obviously dont want that, is there maybe kina smt like a radius option for bones? or smh tell a bone to only move specific parented objects?
@@bUildYT Unfortunately I don't work much with armatures and bones and such so I can't help much there : / Sorry. Maybe something in the "Constraints" section? I am not sure what objects are able to have constraints but to show you what I am referring to, when you select an empty, it's the blue tab in the properties bar, kind of like modifiers but for non mesh objects
Some tips to make this workflow even faster is to only use one material for all the buildings. Do the following: Replace the texture using a random island node going into mix RGB Replace the roof textures using a the normal from a geometry material node into separate X Y Z, and feeding Z into the mix RGB.

I know this isn't relevant but I was genuinely shaken up when I saw your taskbar. It's identical to mine except for whatever's to the left of blender and the weather thing on the left. Same kinda feeling as when you see your reflection in a mirror you didn't notice and stumble over thinking it's another person for a second lol
Some of us are kind of new to this, I had trouble finding out most of what you're doing. I don't know if you plan to simplify any of it but if not I don't think I'll stick around at least until I get better
I stumbled upon your video by a chance, and to my luck, it was exactly what I was looking for. I needed to make a city for my game, and Blender exports to .glb format. I never used Blender before. I was stuck on the cube projection step for an hour, but I managed to make it work. Now I am scared to close Blender. I don't know if I will be able to replicate this lol
"A valid directory for data in the addon preferences isn't set" Those who have this issue, go and pick a directory to store your data under the add on preferences, once that is done you should be able to import the map

Hi loved the tutorial but i have a question. How to select all the roof (faces) in edit mode because there are too many faces to select manually, any short cut or technique for selecting only roof tops like you did in selecting buildings by ``L`` shortcut????
It comes with a roof material that is already assigned to the that area. You can simply press 'select' on that material in the shader editor. You could also just go to top orthographic view, face select mode and then drag over everything.
At 2:43, when I try to import the buildings, a message appears saying "A valid directory for data in the addon preferences isn't set" what do I do ? I don't know if it's linked but I'm on Linux. Does anyone have this issue ?
im having trouble importing, i have my selection made and its a 1.5x1.5 area but when i paste and import it only imports one item but its not a city or anything. no matter how big i scale it its never visible

I have no idea how to use the UV map. I used the shortcuts you mentioned, but I can't get past the little popup that says 'Cube Projection' with aspect, bounds and scale options. Nothing comes up on the UV map. I'm so confused

Had the same exact problem, I just downloaded blender and never used it before. There it a tiny "expand" symbol right underneath options in the top right of your screen. Thats where I found it

If you lost the roof selection - select any roof face, Shift + G > Normal. It should select all faces with the same direction of normals.

Definitely this. I can't find any clouds that come out as well as that plus the atmosphere.
It's probably just an image plane with a blender sky texture. He covers some of this in his lighting tutorial.

ahhh i got it it worked thx :) ( its on the right above the material properties under the vertex groups, there u have to switch from UVMap to size)

I'm having problems with the building textures, can't see them on the render. I'm scalating them as on 5:25 but nothing changes.

you need to make a folder on your computer to store data imported from the map stuff and select it as a directory on the add-on's settings
