    As someone who never uses prefabs and downloadable models, it’s funny to hear one tip be learn how to model. It’s by far the most useful tool for 3D. Don’t get into environment art without knowing modeling!

    • @renatotarma42O
      @renatotarma42O ปีที่แล้ว +56

      Modeling is a super skill that u need to learn but dont say that people that cant model cant try doin environment scenes. 3D is more than modeling, even if u dont know how to model u need to know how to setup lights, tweak textures,etc.

    • @RickHenderson
      @RickHenderson ปีที่แล้ว +21

      Exactly. Some people want to model, some people want to design experiences.

    • @d3affy
      @d3affy ปีที่แล้ว +17

      @audio technika yes, basic modelling skills are important and beneficial to have. still, it's not always necessary to master every detail, especially when you're just beginning. for instance, if one aims to create a video featuring a car, it isn't mandatory for them to know how to model the car from scratch. instead, focusing on developing skills in composition, lighting, and animation might be a more efficient use of their time, as these skills can significantly impact the overall quality of their project.
      in a professional setting, it's about leveraging expertise and resources. for instance, a professional motion designer might be wasting valuable time and effort by trying to model a car, when they could potentially purchase a high-quality model made by a dedicated 3D modeller
      everyone has their own approach when it comes to learning and creating 3D art. there are various roles within the field and not everyone needs to be a master at everything. as long as they're producing quality work that they're proud of, and continually striving to improve and expand their skill set, that's what truly matters

    • @BrendanHenry
      @BrendanHenry ปีที่แล้ว +37

      We tend to use prefab models in the industry solely as a cost & time measure. If you need a ladder in real life, you go buy a ladder. You don't build your own ladder. But knowing how to build one, how the ladder works, why it works, what material you need it made from etc.
      So when it comes to a scene or environment that needs a cg ladder, we approach in the same way. Why spend 5-8 hours at $200/hour (agency rate, not an employee's hourly) to build a photoreal ladder that matches what we need, when we can spend $20-80 for a piece that an artist has created. We might adjust the mesh, we often retexture and build the shaders from scratch, but that artist put so much of their creative energy into creating that ladder that it would be absolutely foolish to create a ladder when theirs is available.
      Knowing how to model and texture is crucial, but knowing how to budget your time is equally as important.

      I agree that true artist will know how to use all their tools. Ive usually just downloaded pre made models and used them for architecture. Honestly saved me a lot of time. But in the end i sometimes wish to make my own

I started as hobbyist, with time I became an environment artist/terrain modeler and I had the opportunity to work in projects for great studios. I can confirm what you said, time, passion and efforts can really make you become a good artist and earn some money. Now, even if I made my life choice, it was (and in some cases still is) a wonderful adventure.

    I wish I could like this twice Max, I've been waiting for you to put out a course for a long time. You've been the artist making things that tick off all of my own personal boxes of both things I like to see as well as things I'd like to create (scale, light, life, brutalist architecture, futurism, ancient ruins, etc). I've been struggling with focus, inspiration, and motivation for months now, I think this might just be the thing that drags me out of that hole.

  • @thechilledpotato6253

    Love your work man! Subbed now.
    Great point about lighting, keeping it simple. I was always intimidated by how to light a scene, but one day this guy I was working with in film said "Start with what you can't control and work up from there", and that made approaching lighting way easier for me, it makes it methodical, not just a creative choice.
    One approach based on that approach is to add in a HDRI and get it to look as good as possible, then use a light or two extra in the scene to highlight what's important or way too dark. I hope that helps someone who is struggling with lighting xD

    Also this is beyond helpful and generous. I wish I had this, and I’ll definitely give back in a similar fashion because if I had these I’d have been more directed. A lot of time was spent on finding my bearings😂❤❤❤❤
    Another tip with lights is to have a small group of lights that have been set with all the attention, while another group can be experimental and is dispensable can later be considered unnecessary and discarded so you don’t get carried away and make a mess.

    As a 3d artist and an artist in general, I know that the only way to improve is to practice and as you mentioned in the video, seek help and guidance from already good artists such as you, so for me buying this course is a step in the right direction, it will help me learn new things, improve my perspective, and elevate my art. I will definitely buy it, your art is the most inspiring and eye-catching to me and I want to replicate it, adapt it, and improve it in my own way.
    Btw will you keep updating this course and continue adding to it?
    and one small note: I noticed that in most of your renders, you use people to give an essence of grandeur and scale, will you share where to get 3d people models from? either in the course or in general.

    Hi Max. Im just about getting started into doing proper scenes after modeling quite a few things. But i still am unable to render dark scene such as your tutorial for bonfire in dark forest type without getting many noises. I did increase the sampling but that took about an hour per frame (8gb vram my rig. Is there any other way to reducing the noises without increasing the render time too much? On a low sample 128, (noise threshold 0.5000) render time was 1min30 seconds, but after changing both to default sample and threshold to 0.0100 render took 1hr for a frame. Please do share some advice on how to get it at least a bit faster and less noisier.

    0:51 I'm in the same situation (26M), where I don't have a job, can't choose a career, no "friends", aquintances, yes.
    Thus no girlfriend , 😭
    People, family at gatherings ask questions ❓😞
    I mumble.
    I do have a Computer science degree but that is not what I like as a career. _Although in India if you don't work at a MNC IT company you're gonna die poor_
    Over here there's no place for Blender. It's all Autodesk , and Adobe.
    How I found about Max is through ILLENIUM.
    I listen to Odesza ILLENIUM Nurko etc etc.
    I think that's the best thing happend to Max , he gets to make the artwork for his favourite artist.
    How cool is that!🎉

    So many people loosely saying they are artists. I won't put myself near being an artist yet. I am a 3d hobbyist and a photographer. Some might think I am doing art in fancy sense but I am just exploring and learning new things. Nowdays people think they are what they decide to be in snap of the fingers and it is so unauthentic and plasticky. First put 1000 hours into it and then see if you are something near to what you wanted to be.

    You're super skilled at what you do, and the course seems great, but the course page has quite a few typos that you might wanna iron out.

    Awesome work Max, one question, do you use Photoshop for the final composition? If yes, will u show it in ur course?
