  • ABOUT HILTON:
    Born in Baltimore, Maryland, Hilton Carter began his passion for plants in the spring of 2014, while living in New Orleans. With his love for interior design boiling over, he wanted to create a living space that felt more alive and relaxing. This lead him to began bringing in more plants and by 2015, now living back in Baltimore, MD, he would have accumulated more than 60 plants.
    His knowledge for how to care for them came from what he gathered from nurseries, things he read online, but mainly from the trial and error he had gone through with those plants in his personal collection. Over the next few years Hilton would bring more than 300 plants into his home and studio, to create what many would call an urban jungle.
    Through many years of developing his green thumb and his career as an artist, Hilton Carter continues his creative profession helping to style homes with greenery and share his passion with the community.

    So nice to see someone talk about how to be successful with plants long term, not just in the Instagram moment. Yes, cactus and succulents look adorbs planted in all sorts of creative vessels that lack drainage holes, and sitting in a spot that gets no light, but that's not a plan for a healthy plant if that's what you are looking for. Hilton, please consider doing a video on choosing the right size container, choosing the right type of container (drainage vs not, use of cache pots, glazed vs unglazed and how all affect watering schedules), and choice and preparation of potting soils.

    I’ve had a cactus for about 3 years, the name I chose was prick lol. I had a partner for it who’s name was poke but poke passed shorty after potting sadly but I haven’t taken into consideration the proper care that they need, definitely going to start taking way better care of prick!

    Unquestionably, I must have a "PURPLE" thumb, because I can even kill a Cactus. Furthermore, I had professionals plant a desert Oasis theme in my front yard including Peruvian Apple Cactus and it all died. Having said that, I live in the desert and I followed the instructions of watering. In addition, I even had the dirt evaluated and redone. However, every cactus I have planted or professionally planted has died 😳.

So my husband and I go looking around at the different kinds of cactuses and succulents.. and now I have a living room and garage full of cactuses and succulents🤪👍 that need potting 😆 and as I have been potting then in different arrangements.. I have been learning a lot... it’s kept me busy... and it has helped me with my depression definitely 😁🥵 I hope to get a chance to see your update on your plant wall???

    I adore you!! I had a barrel cactus in the front yard of my last house that had these gorgeous almost electric glowing peach colored flowers bloom on the top that were so gorgeous that I made sure to bust off the polinated bulbs of those flowers after the flowers died in order to get thousands of seeds to grow them myself and I've successfully grown these babies from seed. The only problem is I'm not sure how long they need to stay in that very moist environment that they germinate in so I haven't successfully kept them alive. They are so cute as tiny babies though because they all grow their own little hairstyle in the beginning. Mostly a little mohawk but they are each different. Any ideas how long from germination until it is safe to transplant them into cactus soil to feed and water like adult cactus require. I know that cactus being a succulent needs the soil to completely dry out in between waterings but when I try to adjust them to that kind of care is when I wind up losing them 😔. You should grow the dragon fruit cactus. Those are fun.

    Thanks. Why my cactus ( like the one ou have by the mirror) is pale? almost white-yellow. I bought it like that and some parts are black.Looks like it had leaves or flowers? I don’t know if it’s like that because too much direct light ( they had it in a green house). I’m in Japan and direct light in my house comes from the east side. I think I’ll leave her all day in the house because on sunny days I was taking outside ( east) all my cactus ( winter in the center of Japan is sunny, dry and cold ). Thanks

    WOOOOOOOOOOOOW !!! I got a cactus plant, had it from a seed. it's now 20cm tall - apparently cacti don't require plant food but i read online elsewhere that we can - plant food reg based 10/10/10 for it's properties? is that right it can have plant food? apparently they don't need it but it does show them brighter colours apparently.

      I'm working on getting an answer for you about the type of cactus!
      As for repotting, you'll want to do that when you start to see roots showing through the drain holes on the bottom of the container. Best to do it in late winter or early spring!

    • @paullaing5921
      @paullaing5921 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      No, a Christmas cactus is more of a tropical plant, its native environment is usually a rainforest. A Christmas cactus needs a whole lot more water (in a well drained pot) than a normal desert cactus does. There are plenty of good videos on TH-cam about how to look after your Christmas cactus.

      If you think your cactus has had too much water and/or the soil the cactus is in is waterlogged. Take the cactus out of the pot before root rot sets in and repot it in some dry cactus/succulent compost. I would probably not water it for couple of weeks too. Hope this helps.

    Cactus and succulents really need VERY well draining soil. Grit, grit, grit! Extra perlite, granite chicken grit, molar clay kitty litter, coarse sand, pumice rock, lava rock....add any combination of these to your organic succulent soil, along with the extra perlite. Roots of these plants need to dry out.
