Sinnoh was definitely Ash’s peak team due to being a bit more balanced and bringing back his old Pokemon. His Kalos team is great too despite having 3 flying types.

I do think ash is a mediocre trainer, but tbh, he's more realistic as compared to red.
Like think about it. The only thing red is obsessed with is power, power and power. His only goal is to be an invincible trainer. He's captured all the kanto Pokémon but all of them remain confined in PCs while he ever only uses his 'standard' team (pikachu, venusaur, charizard and all).
Ash on the other hand is more of a realistic person. He doesn't release his strong Pokémon intentionally. He releases them because they want to be released for some greater good. He isn't selfish. Plus, sure he never wins the elite four which is a frustrating blunder on part of the writers as people won't stop watching Pokémon just because Ash wins a league. But still, he has gym badges of every region which is respectable.
Add to that, how many times has he saved the world from destruction, even with his weak unevolved Pokémon?
Ash isn't a good trainer, but because he's a good human, I think he's better than Red who is just obsessed with power.

Their mentality was and I qoute "having Ash win a pokemon tournament would mean his journey would be over, and by extension the Pokemon anime". Which obviously makes literally zero sense to anyone with common sense because it completely contradicts what Ash is trying to accomplish in his journey in the first place, which is to become a pokemon master. He can't be a fucking pokemon master if he never wins a single Pokemon Tournament. Him being a true pokemon master would imply he actually beats all the big tournaments he participates in but he doesn't. So basically GameFreak is completely fucking brain dead and illogical. @@azaefe you should watch Kalos, by far one of the best seasons, if not the best for character development, the battles and everything pretty much.
@@antoine2941 But characters and their development were on an another level. The group had very good chemistry and it was charming to watch them throughout Kalos.
