    I don't think a lot of people have figured out yet how limiting the CF Express A will be to this camera. You can build in all the fast features you want, but you can't use those fast features while you're waiting for the buffer to dump. I don't know how big the buffer is in this camera, but it better be huge. Even if it is, you'll be happy for a time, and then have to waite even longer for what you've taken to spool out to the card. What we're talking about is using the cool features in short bursts, and then waiting.
    There's a (fairly) new Gen 4 in CF Express B that is MUCH faster than the current version. I hope and trust that the R1 will include it. CF-A is already slower than CF-B, and the Gen 4 is a LOT faster than the current CF-A. Sony's penchant for trying to force a standard goes all the way back to BetaMax videotape, and it's going to be a problem in this camera. People have to learn not to fall in love with a spec sheet. Slow storage in the fastest camera (of its type) ever made? That's going to make some problems in the field. It's a tool, not a toy - at least for most people.
    I can also tell people who have never shot an R3 that the sheer volume of stills can be almost overwhelming. It's not for the faint-hearted. This thing will dwarf that. Give me an R3 with 60mp, QPAF, and Gen 4 storage and I'll be happy.

      Indeed, buffer takes about 1.6s at 120fps. If they just upgraded their CFxA from gen3 to gen4, they would at least get CFxB Gen3 speeds.
      Can anybody explain why such a fast camera should still support slooooow SD cards ??

    The specs for the A9 III are insane but nothing that would benefit me personally as a stacked sensor is still perfect for wildlife photography. I see the main benefit of the camera being flash photography with really fast shutter speeds. For the 300mm F2.8, from what I have seen these type of lenses take 2x converters really well, I know someone with an old Nikon 300mm and he uses it permanently with a 2x converter and image quality is still really sharp, he previously used it for weddings and simply with the purchase of a 2x he now enjoys birding 🙂

    I'm a Canon guy + I need a crop sensor for the extra reach, but I love to see these amazing technological developments, as they will nearly always trickle down to other cameras in the future. Since it might be 3 years for a Canon R7 Mk II, maybe that will be enough time ?

    Hi Jan, the a9iii certainly sounds special, but I’ll be staying with my a7iv. I still have to master that. Interestingly when I started bird photography 2.5 years ago and dove into the TH-cam pond, most people said buy good glass and cameras will change. That has certainly in part been true, but for birds and wildlife Nikon seems to have put a lot into lens, particularly making them lighter as well as better to match more what cameras can do. A recent blog on Steve Perry’s forum on cataract surgery showed the age of bird photographers. The fast majority of these want lighter gear. I’m waiting for a lightweight long tele zoom from Sony. Thanks for the video.

    I salute Sony for bringing in a global shutter, but the proof is in the pudding. The more I learn about the details, the more I think it may have trouble living up to the hype. Check out that narrow ISO range -- 250 to 12,800? And the megapixel count is really too meager for a bird shooter. The R3 proved that 24 MP just isn't enough. The A9iii promises to be a great camera for high-speed sports. Anything else? Not sure. (The buffer is 1.6 seconds.)

    • @janvanholten7592
      @janvanholten7592 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      My 24 MP is for sure enough!! But I know that a lot of people are shooting birds that are far away and at home they cut off 50% of the image. In my opinion, that has not much to do with photography. I think the challenge is to develop a certain degree of expertise in the field.

      Perhaps DxO or Topaz is bundled with it. Analog noise and low dynamic range is why it is limited to 250-12,000 ISO.

    • @baredesigns1
      @baredesigns1 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Almost 2 decades back max resolution was 16-22mp which was sufficient for scintillating birding pictures. 24 is sufficient.
      PLUS Base ISO being 250, higher ISOs will need less gain = lower noise
      Lower MP = bigger photosites = lower noise
      In short this is a big win. Assuming Dynamic Range is as per current standards. Also hoping Sony color science is better than A1

    One card brand I never see any reviews on is Integral. I've used their cinematic grade CF Express Cards for a good while now. I purchased their 1TB Ultima Pro X2 Cinematic grade silver cards for my Z9 and they perfom fabulously. They claim a sustained write speed of 1300MB/s and I've no reason to doubt it. They do an even faster grade Gold card which is faster still! I've tested my cards hard in the Z9. Using the highest quality RAW setting I get the full 20fps up until the buffer fills and then it drops to around 15fps thereafter and keeps going till the card is full! Given the best of the Delkin Blacks, Angelbirds, Lexar's and Cobolts perform similarly from reviews I've seen I'm stumped why nobody seems to know about these cards. Definitely worth checking out! 😀

    I love the concept of Global Shutter and congratulations to Sony for sharing this with the world. Love that the flash sync and the video features - they fixed a lot of things. That said, a lot of other aspects seem quite a bit of overkill and fancy - 120 fps. I can imagine deleting and reviewing photos being a full time job soon! Unless, we get an AI tool that recommends deletions. And at 24.5 mp, the resolution is nothing great nor future proof. And lastly, at $6000, thats a bomb, almost $1500 more than the A9II and close to A1. Maybe its a direct competitor to R3 and hence it was priced like that.

    • @alansach8437
      @alansach8437 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Just my two cents worth. It's images that are future proof, not resolution. Ansell Adams and Galen Rowell (and others) shot with now obsolete technologies, but their images will live forever. It doesn't matter if you have film in your camera, 6mpx, 8, 12, 24, 45, 61 or 100. Nor does the shutter type matter or how many fps it shoots. If your images are compelling enough, your camera is "future proof"! It's not the hammer. It's what you build with it.

    Always great to see your video Jan!
    I must say this new sony camera looks pretty amazing but while back then the 1dx markII was the best in every category, nowadays I would never go back to a "sport" camera like a 1dx or R3 or this new A9. 24mp just doesn't cut it anymore imo.
    That being said I'm holding on before buying another r5 to replace my 1dxii to see if canon can come up with a r5-2 and implement some of those new features.. And ESPECIALLY the pre shooting option.. That would be the absolute best..
    120fps honestly is overkill imo.. 30fps is plenty enough for me and already a pain to browse through, I can't imagine myself going through 100k+ of images instead of my 30k during my last trip, that was already taxing enough..
    I would love global shutter BUT I'll probably take a small rolling shutter with a fast reading sensor like the Sony a1 over a global IF the low light /high Iso takes a hit. I see myself shooting more and more with 2k+ Iso and I don't want to go back to the days when 2k was the actual limit..
    Anyway exciting time, and about time canon come up with their r1 and hopefully a new r5 with some of those new tech in it (please bring pré shooting!!)

    Hey Jan, it interests me more in the trickle down effect of the pre-capture feature, the rear display and the nice EVF. The same for Nikon shooters, if they’re lucky Sony will license the sensor to Nikon, and that should be on the market in two or three years. Canon has made and used global sensors before, so It’s likely it will feature in an upcoming stills camera as well. It’s exciting times for sure, for all photographers from every brand. That could be true, Canon brought out the R6ii after 2 1/2 years, and the R3 has been out two years this month, and with the Summer Olympics just around the corner, one would expect them to showcase the best they’ve got. Hi Jan, thanks for this update ! That a9iii indeed sets the bar and has some awesome features. With it's new price point, it clearly targets the same market as the R3 .. and I expect the R3ii might be the first Canon with a global shutter. It was once rumored for the R1, but CR was recently stating the global shutter would not be ready in time for the R1.
    One thing I really don't get from the a9iii is the fact Sony seems to stick with the CFxA gen3 cards. with either providing Gen4 speeds, or moving up to CFxB they would double the speed and increase the usable buffer length.
    Now I read the buffer in 120fps is only 1.6 seconds, which is huge handicap for this market I would think.
    Also, the 1/80000 shutter speed would only be available in a single shot mode, and would only come later via firmware to continuous shooting.
    The 24mp should be fine when you combine it with the 200-800 because that gives the same amount of pixels on the bird as the R5 with the 200-600 .. or am I mixing things up now ??🙈
    For memory card I'm using the Angelbird Pro SE 512Gb, which is fast enough for me and offered me the best value for money (in fact the price was identical to a slow 256Gb SD V30 card I bought a year earlier !!) and after 160k images the Angelbird didn't give a single glitch.
    Really looking forward to your 200-800 review !!! For some crazy reason, the price in Europe is exactly what I paid my 100-500 and it's (including taxes !) 25% more expensive than in Japan and US. Later this month I'll have a 10 day business trip to Japan, but it looks like their shipments start about a week after I fly home, so no option to get it from there 😞

      @davepastern 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      the CFA v3 cards are Sony's method of CrippleHammering the A9III so that it won't compete with the A1 II. Sony will not be using CFExpress type B cards anytime soon I strongly suspect.
      We'll see a R1 before we see a RII.
      When do you really need to shoot 1/80000 second LOL...I can already shoot 1/64000 with my R3 btw.
      More mp is always better. 24mp is not enough. I based this on 11 months of using my R3 (500f4 with 1.4x TC, so 700mm reach). it's OK for larger birds, but smaller birds, you're losing resolution, even without cropping.
      Angelbird makes top notch cards (I use the SX160).
      Note that the Aussie price for the RF200-800 includes GST and a 5 year warranty. US and Europe ONLY offer a single year of warranty, and neither listed price includes local tax. Factor that in, and the Aussie price is pretty close. The Aussie price initially caught me out and I thought we were getting ripped off until I sat down and gave it a lot of thought.
      Good luck with Japan.

    • @WernerBirdNature
      @WernerBirdNature 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@davepastern Thanks Dave ! Fully agree regarding Sony! Same on resolution .. 11 months of using the 20mp R6 convinced me to swap it for the R5, and even with 45mp, using the 100-500 with the 1.4 TC leaves me hungry for even more reach ;-)
      Regarding Europe it's actually including 2 year warranty and including taxes. Strange thing is some Canon products are here (when including taxes for all) same price as US and Japan, while for others (like the 200-800) we're being ripped off. No clue what this lens costs now in Aussie$, but a year ago the R5 was in US and Australia a big amount cheaper than Europe and Japan who were equally expensive then.

    Global shutter sensors are obviously the future and it’s awesome to see them finally coming to market. I personally wouldn’t mind Canon sticking with a stacked sensor for the R1 though if it means low light performance will be on par or close to the R3 but at a higher resolution like 45MP. I’m not sure what the limits of a stacked sensor are as far as frame rate but even if Canon can offer 60fps that would be incredible. The a9 III seems great but the lack of disclosure on ISO range, dynamic range, etc. is definitely concerning. A native ISO range of 25,600 for a 24MP sensor doesn’t bode well, the R3 is two years old and has two more stops of native ISO range at the same resolution and even with that extra headroom I rarely go over 25,600.

    I think it will do great for the users it was intended for. But for wildlife, no. Like you said, cropping is essential for wildlife and 40mp for me is the minimum resolution I would ever consider. Landscape photographers however, can utilize the a9iii quite well with image stacking to gain resolution and it would work quite well. But other than that I'll be staying with the a7R5 because the images are absolutely amazing and cropping is great.

And Kingston Canvas React Plus SDXC 128GB in the Canon R7, which is fast and yet affordable. Before I exclusively used Sandisk CF cards, but I have no regrets switching to these brands. As for the Canon lens delays . . . standard procedure. It seems all the major manufacturers are "introducing" products six months or longer before they will be available. (see also, the RF 100-300mm). At least Sony, with the A9iii, is honest about the lengthy wait. There should be new rumor categories for how many months (or years) will elapse between intro date and the date the products are available to regular customers. It is hard to get excited about new product introductions when the products are unlikely to be available in a reasonable time.

    As an A1 shooter this is fascinating but nothing worth switching over. I’ll take my 30fps at 50mp all day long and we basically have a global shutter already anyway with the insane read out speeds of the A1. The first month I had my A1 I shot prop planes. I thought for sure I’d have some rolling shutter but the read out speeds of the A1 are perfect.

    • @MusikPiratCH
      @MusikPiratCH 6 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      Well, you don't lose anything with those 120 fps (not even space on your card). Because the way Sony implanted it is that you can choose which picture(s) to keep out of a movie. So you will choose the moment you'd like to catch! It's far more precise than those 20 or even 40 fps.
      But to change systems only because Sony is first with this technology is rather weird IMHO. Just wait and see. Canon and Nikon will certainly bring out their GS cameras. I assume Canon will delay their R1 once more (because of the GS)! Canon however will bring out their R5 II. It doesn't need to have GS right now! Probably GS today is only possible with 24 Mp! 🤔

I showed this to many people from the industry and all could see that and I have some friends with Sony cameras that have the same problem, but nobody talks about that. You only see it with wide open lenses (f1.2/1.4) when you zoom to the iris and the difference to Canon is huge. I tested it on the Sony A7 iv and than the A7Rv and the A7cii and A7Rc!
    The quality of Canon’s autofocus is just so much superior that I decided to go back to Canon. It’s all the hype about new technology of Sony, but at the end, they don’t deliver the same quality as Canon And I think you should keep that in mind when you see all the fever about Sony gear…

      The vast majority of photographers never print larger than 20x30. Many never print at all. Their images are shared on line. Also, though not as dramatic as it once was, images tend to be cleaner out of the camera, less noise at higher ISO, with fewer megapixels.

    Hi Jan, I definitely agree with you that the 24.6 MP is a cripple hammer as regards us bird photographers. Also as this is the first of this technology out of the box I think that people could be somewhat pre-mature if they jump at it right away. In my experience it is always better to wait until we see people using them in the field and getting some feedback in real world experience. I personally will be finding ways now to save up for future release of the Sony A1 Mark 2. I have gotten used to the 50MP and sharp focus of the A1 but when the mark 2 comes out I think that it may blow our minds.

    So where’s the SHAME ON CANON AND NIKON ?? I mean if it weren’t for Sony “many” years ago pushing for mirrorless, would Canon and Nikon REALLY have gone out of their way to make R and Z series cameras?
    Love them or hate them, EVERYONE needs to thank Sony.

    def sports, low iso good, quick sending of files, lots of storage due to burst shooting, clients storage expectation. This means Nikon will get the same sensor or their own soon, i was always using mech due to the banding you got from the background Boards in arenas and LED lighting in stage and theatre. This is a game changer for the "normal" downsides. I wont make me move to sony as like all things i can live with what i have until nikon get the same sensors in their bodies.

    Don't get me wrong, Sony always comes up with good marketing words (in this case, everything looks amazing on paper) but in real-world scenarios, Nikon & Canon are what they say is how the camera performs, Especially Nikon…at least from my experience. Sony, tries to hide its flaws.
    But, being said that, the a9 III offers some amazing features such as GS, flash synch speed, uncropped 120fps 4K, and 120fps 14-bit raw…things like that.

    Yeah. Another 10 years and maybe Sony announces lightweight zoom. Because we have only 100-400 and new 300/2.8 what weights under 2 kilos. But 200-600 is amazing. Ah, maybe Sigma will make one...
    Nikon and Canon have amazing chooses in light supertelephotos (nikon pf and old primes, canon zooms with closed apertures, 100-500 and old good 400/5.6 and 100-400/5
    6) but sony is not. Or u pay 3-6k$ for lenses what don't suit you 100%, or u have 200-600 what weight a lot

      A7 iii is cool camera. But it's sad what rumour about 30mp is not true. And I hope sony's precapture will not so unusable like in canon r7. More like in om-1 or better. Global shutter I think good for video. For photos... Dunno, stacked sensors already good enough
      But I like the progress in cameras. Like... We yesterday mind-blowes from a9 mark one or a1, and now this new jump

    FYI, There is ZERO new technology in this camera. Its all been here, just like USB4 has already been here, yet taken over 20 years. Just like CAT8, and EVERYTHING else. OLED, LED, Stone manufacturing, electronics, machinery. ...This camera features in particular...They could have made it with more MP, with zero issues...You dont think they already have 3000mm optics, or 6000mm. Its all already here, and NOT expensive to make. Its just controlled release. Its actually old world technology being rebranded and then reintroduced as new tech. Nothing new under the sun. We have been very slowly fed all the tech that already existed, and was able to produce. Just like we cannot understand old world architecture and how it is made, and we deductively try to solve it, its the same. We have had LED lighting for super long. What makes them slowly get introduced is the fact that greed wants to maximize profits, while also trying to make it seam like we are progressing it technology. Which is the farthest thing from the truth. We have regressed in all the important tech, and only made the consumable tech better marketed.
    This camera is great, but in reality, this is STILL centuries behind what can be accomplished. This is just one more cookie thrown at the slaves to keep their hopes up. But we have imaginations and delusions that keep the masses wanting more. If you really think about it, technology is only limited by the mass slave income of affordability. As the level of intelligence drops, the easier it is to keep the masses occupied with stagnant tech. As long as you are still paying your taxes, and consuming junk, the control companies have done their jobs. So there is no reason to make anything better.

  • @philindeblanc
    @philindeblanc 6 หลายเดือนก่อน

    Wow, you seam to be satisfied a bit easy , no? by old and NOTHING new tech, and you say the price is not too bad? Wow. AND they keep the same resolution? I have to disagree.
