NEAR EPIC FAIL: Testing Crawl Control vs Diff Lockers in a Toyota 2 Door SWB ZR Prado.

  • We drive plenty of sports cars, but we do love off roading as well, so we figured we would take our neglected Toyota Landcruiser Prado ZR (the relatively rare, obscure 2 door version of Toyota's best selling mid sized off road 4x4).
With only a handful of these in the country (Australian delivered), we fell in love with it, but rarely get to drive it. With racing season over we decided we would put the little shorty through its paces, and discovered how the "Crawl Control" feature almost eliminates the need for a front locker.
However all did not go to plan, as we just about lost the car altogether trying to demonstrate the feature.
One thing that did impress us though, were the Cooper AT3 tyres, which are quiet, all terrain, but we put them to the test through deep sloppy mud, rocks and some very testing terrain.
It's certainly a different kind of rush compared to the usual 250kph on the race track, but it's a whole lot of fun regardless :)
Just be prepared, as without some of the safety/recovery gear, this little demo could have gone oh so much worse.
Thanks to Michael, Shaun, Jason, and Jade for the footage, as well as Cooper & Simon for the hookup on the AT3's!

Don't know anything about off-roading, but i can imagine why the Land Cruiser is so loved all over the world. What a cool car! 😎

Fun video, tip for next time, when you were clenching your rear end, although it sounds counter intuitive, you should be trying to "turn into trouble" so it needed the hard right hand down, not the left as your spotter was saying.
Toyota's crawl control is one of, if not, the best in the business. Another tip... With the Kakadu (and your random 2 door) the crawl control still works with the rear locker engaged, effectively using the brake traction control on the front.
Robert pepper does some good videos on his Hill of truth showing just how good Toyota's traction control is.

Love your work! Where was this shot at? You should do a video on how long it took to clean all that mud off 😂

Brilliant! I still believe you could have gotten out of the situation without the winch, but better safe than sorry, isn't it? 😀

I love manual diff locks but can get unexperienced drivers in trouble because an unlocked vehicle will stop before angles get too extreme, a double locked vehicle can often keep going until they literally fall over. Right hand down would have been in order there backing down that hill. Using AT,s on that slippery clay will make things ' interesting ', looks like you had fun though.

Should have tried the manual run with left foot braking for a safer and more meaningful test.

Yep, that is a spotters job, keep the wheelman under control.
Line selection on the full send wasn't the best.

Wasn't the wisest of choices, agreed.. But I guess at least people won't just say "would have made it with more gas".. We kinda disproved that one lol

Time and a place for it, but with that style of divot no, and most likely created by people going foot down.
Like everything, there are different styles of driving, from leave no evidence you were even there, to that seems too hard, make your own path going that wheel wider and then the full senders that can change tracks with a single pass.

Well, I’m no expert in this but when you are driving up with Center locked and rear locked (2:42) and you are spinning the left front wheel. At that time both rear wheels should also be spinning, did they? I cannot see it in the video. Center and Rear lockers should lock three wheels together if I am correct.
And also, I think the ATRAC (traction control) should help, at least if one front wheel and one rear wheel is spinning. But the ATRAC seems to be activated by spinning wheels slow, much slower than in the video.
    Geat video nevertheless, thanks!

That's the same width of tyre but about 1 inch larger diameter than stock.
