  • The Mercedes E430 was a V8 luxury sedan from Mercedes golden era of quality and refinement. This chunk of late 90's motoring comes with everything you need for a relaxing drive, and maybe more than that! Today we'll take a look at this 2002 E430 and find out why this is such a bargain at less than $4,000 USD!

Meh, Hoover was always a fake really. I checked out of his channel a year ago when it was clear that he was going in the supercar direction. The smug delivery and fake exasperation at his repairs to his "hoopties" gets really old.

@@ForeverDownByLaw Hoover might not be deeply invested in every vehicle he ends up with, he does have a system for creating content, but he is still entertaining and takes pride in what he does. I know for some, his personality might be a little off-putting but that is why so many people like him.

Yeah, I like the style of your car videos. It is similar to those about old MacBooks. It is all about value and build quality. And I also like the cars you showed until now - driving a 23 year old French V6 and have a 26 year old BMW V8 as a project in my front yard. Greetings from Germany

First off - Luke, love to see you are into German cars as well as the tech world.
So, my uncle bought one of these V8 W210's off the lot brand new. Black with the Palomino (beige) interior. 1997, $50,000. In 2010, he decided to join the BMW SUV craze and sold it to me in 2010 for $10,000. He was a car guy, so it was in immaculate condition. Your car is mostly identical, just some minor styling updates and a few more digits in the dash. MB did move from a 4 valve V8 to a 3 valve. HP is the same, but MB saved some cost in the redesign. Your observations mirror mine for the most part. It's not necessarily sporty. However, the car is stupid fast, it just won't dance like a BMW from the era, it's gotta move some mass. It will accelerate and click off redline shifts without drama, and you will be exceeding 100 and not even realize it, the car is so smooth. If you manually shift with the lever, and hold it in second, it will push you back in the seat, if so requested :-)
My car had some issues of course, but it never stranded me. It was a garaged California/PNW car, so there was no rust, and minimal (dings) body damage. I sold it in 2020, and I miss it. A short list of problems included an intermittent sticky heater valve solenoid which made the A/C blow hot in the summer. Fussy electric seat controls. The sunroof was having some weird failures, and the rubber trim was deteriorating. The hyper-over engineered cup holder failed. The entire assembly pops out of the console without tools and was easily put back together.
I had to replace a leaky radiator. Tune-ups are easy for a do it yourselfer, saves a huge amount of money. Oil changes are easy, as well as filters (cabin and engine), spark plugs, serpentine belt. Oh, the belt driven fan clutch needed to be replaced. Since the car had well over 100k on it towards the end of my ownership, I changed the transmission fluid myself. Turns out the transmission is used in a variety of Chrysler products, including the 300 sedan, and a few Jeep models, which means you can use $5 per quart Chrysler recommended fluid instead of $30 per quart MB branded fluid from the dealer, and you need 8 quarts.
Sold it for $5,000 and bought a 2017 GTI in 2020 before the car market went nuts. The buyer got a good deal I think. I reminded her to keep up on the maintenance and the car should give her (at least) another 100,000 mostly care free miles. Truly a bargain when these cars depreciate.

This is the IDENTICAL car I own! 😃 I love my W210 and just drove it 4000 miles in 10 days driving across the country and back for my mother’s funeral a few months ago. It’s a rust free 2 owner California car and I did 40+ hours of paint correction when I got it and it came out really clean. I lowered it with sport touring springs, put on 18" wheels and tinted the windows to update the gangster look. It got almost 27mpg at 68mph over the recent trip and yearly maintenance is only about $300 if you do everything yourself. It’s not fast or exciting to drive but it just does everything you expect from a car brilliantly and with zero fuss for the driver. I also own a 500hp E55 AMG and I still find myself driving the W210 most places just because it feels more ‘special’ even though the W211 is superior in almost every way. There’s just something about the old school ‘Benz vibe these still offer and I have no plans of ever selling it.

This model, 210, of mercedes is very reliable.
    I have a 2001 e330. I have very little trouble with it.
The mercedes engines in these, both eight and six cylinder, are bullet proof.
You can tell what gear you are in if you push the shifter over into manual mode. The clock readout on the binnacle also gives you a gear reading.

The W210 are excellent cars. If only they wouldn't (almost all) rust away or already be in Aserbaidschan (at least a lot of former German cars). Since they were a bazillion ones used as a Taxi over here, part prices are very low here. Almost bought one three times as a daily.

8:49 If you do all your own maintenance it's not a break the bank proposition. This era Mercedes is both reliable, and easily fixed by a competent shade tree mechanic. The M113 engine and 722.6 automatic don't have the sort of modern maintenance "hindrances" that require proprietary/expensive machinery that makes private repair impossible.

My friend, are you not acquainted with the M113 & 5G combo? Especially if you're doing your own wrenching, you'll be hard pressed to find a cheaper Benz to run as well as a more reliable one.
Older chassis from their hay day are far better built (& engineered), but nowhere near as easy to wrench on. This of course, is also OBD II unlike w124's, w123's, w126's, etc.
Biggest downside of w210's is rust.

Parts are very affordable and very available for this chassis. You just need to know what's what. No parts store garbage or going to a general mechanic. If you're not doing your own work, a Euro car (or better a Benz specific) indy is the only way.
Not that things are unrealistically complicated, but attention to detail is needed as well as general knowledge of the architecture, etc.

This model had the worst Mercedes build quality, and they’re absolute rust buckets. You mention 107K miles… for a W123/W124 that’s running in mileage
If it was high quality, the headliner wouldn’t be sagging, the wings wouldn’t be rusty etc etc etc
