I feel awful for the paint guy! It's not often that you get an employee that has such an intense passion about his job... hell, his craft, even. The fact that he designed a presentation for the marketing department shows a great deal of initiative and drive, too. SW really screwed the pooch by letting that fella go. If he really did get hired by a huge paint company after the fact, then it's well deserved. I truly wish him the best on his future pursuits. Hell, he's the type of person that might come up with something mind-blowing in the world of paint (a world I am completely ignorant about). Having said, I can relate to him as an IT, web, and multimedia developer... I do my office hours like everyone else at my agency, but the first thing I do after work and in the morning on weekends it boot up my computer to experiment and grow in my career. When you love what you do for a living, it's no longer a "job."

@@eatinglikeapig he didn’t deserve to be fired… for one, there were no guests in any videos, so he was off, on break, or store wasn’t open yet. Second, happy employees are good employees who make customers happy- target made themselves look bad by firing him.

We only have their sides of the story. For all we know, what they did violated their contracts in some way. They could've also gotten in trouble before, and been on their last warnings.

Best place I've ever been was Movie Tavern. Big ass chair, table and you order food that comes right as the movie starts. A movie theater and a restaurant in one is far better than both alone.

The movie theatre guy, yes I agree with him getting fired. The reason being, he was encouraging people to break the rules. And the concessions is what make the money, for the theaters.
He also completely lied and had the corporation have huge problems when they got A TONNN of Angry calls from movie goers when they were saying that the employees weren't giving them free memberships etc.
Where i work you sign a paper saying you cannot take pics or videi inside work or if youre in uniform. You cannot post anything that may reflect negatively on the company. Im sure he signed the same paper

I'm fairly certain that this is an everywhere thing, but when i worked at a retail-esque job (not going to say which one, even though it's been years) one of the two phrases you'd hear almost every day would be "if you have time to lean, you have time to clean". Even if you were out of the customer's line of sight.
As a closer, watching people stare blankly at a wall or play on their phone instead of helping with the chore list was frustrating at the best of times, infuriating at the worst.

Yeah unfortunately you are correct. It sucks, it was just in good fun, but there's always gonna be someone who comes in and makes it ugly.
I work in radio and in both our promotions and our ads we have to be super careful and crystal clear about EVERYTHING, cover every base and every scenario, because people can and will find a way to make it a thing. That saying "great day at the movies" and getting a free pass thing was a good example - did the company authorise them giving away passes for that? Is this something they're given the jurisdiction to do themselves? Chances are no, and you just know the first person who tries it and doesn't get a GC will raise a huge fuss and it'll be a liability.
So I'm on this dude's side because it was undoubtedly good marketing (based on the video and the comments here) and he was having fun at work, but also on the company's side because false advertising sucks for everybody.
If they'd taken him aside and talked with him about coming up with marketing ideas and working with them on future promotions though, that would have been rad.

No, he encouraged people to tear the place apart looking for gift cards that don't actually exist. Gift cards aren't just given away, except as prizes, and never by the theatres themselves.

I would've fired the Target guy myself for making my store look like the cringiest place on Earth.
I work for a different retailer, and we're issued storage lockers; technically we're not even supposed to have our phones on our person while we're working. Everyone does, in case of emergencies, and as long as we don't use them 'on the floor' during business hours (or when we're busy during night shift) the managers don't make an issue of it. This guy could have had previous warnings about non-essential phone usage, or other rule infractions. A lot of people can't help checking statuses or texting between work breaks, but corporate figured this video made Target look like their employees are allowed to goof off and won't provide excellent customer service. :)

Former theater manager here and yeah, everybody does. I allowed outside water bottles in my buildings no problem. They just had to be clear to make it easier to tell if someone was smuggling in booze lol.

I feel like some of this people didn´t get fired just for the tiktok reason. For someone to get fire by making tiktoks I feel like they where already close to the tipping point.
With a lot of these places they already have rules in place that'll get you in trouble for so much posting a picture of you saying hi.
I'm the type who'll read an employee handbook front to back, I don't know why but I do.
From that I've learned being caught using a cell phone on the clock can get you in trouble, posting on social media while in your uniform can get you in trouble, having a social media account that can be traced to your job of anything bad happens can get you fired, if reporters or anyone asking for an interview you cannot or shouldn't speak with them but instead direct them to hr otherwise you can get fired.
But know when a "disciplinarian" act was done in retaliation. That's when you have your evidence, call hr and lawyer up.
Read your handbooks and OSHA packets!
For the record, the retail places I have worked at in the past tend to have a no cell phones on the floor policy. Not necessarily as a fireable offense on its own, but posting to tiktok wouldve pissed any of them off. I wouldn’t have been surprised if someone got fired for it

i partly disagree. If the target employee was filming that after closing hours or on his break, i dont think he really needs a warning. However if he was doing that during his working hours, then i agree he definitely needs a warning

Although most of them just actually did it without ill intention, at the end of the day they're getting paid to do their actual jobs within their working schedule and not filming tik toks that could've been done after work.
I have a cousin who used to work in Target. She told me managers were basically power trippers and each had rules unique to their branch. I her case, her manager would write up anyone who pulled a cart instead of pushing it.

In some target locations you can't film inside. So, if that was the case for the target employee's location and he went against company policies he should have gotten fired after a fair warning.
But if he’s already been coached or documented for other things maybe that drew the line.

Not some, its all Target locations, no matter what you are not allowed to film or photo without HQ written permission, that means simply taking a snap inside target could be grounds for removal due to breaking policy. ( not saying this is or should be heavily enforced, but it states any photography or video needs HQ permission in their policy )

A lot of employers have social media use clauses in their policies and contracts. Plus, tiktok has such a negative image.
It's so odd that the social media clauses used for stores is stricter than my current employer with military contracts and contracts with the biggest tech companies in the world. LOL we can literally do anything we want just don't film inside work for obvious reasons. But ive signed crazy shit working for stores where I cant even mention where I work etc on social media lol The funniest part is they literally defend our position on having social media but by god if you work at a gas station it's all hell on earth if you talk to people you work with and work finds out

I read a book called 48 Laws of Power and one of the rules is never let your supervisor/boss know that you're more capable/smarter than them.
The paint mixer guy got fired for violating that rule. His superiors became very aware that he is more capable than them so they cut him.
This is extremely common. Dont' let it get you upset. It means that you're supposed to have your own company and not work for someone else.

the movie theaters don’t make money off of tickets. that money goes to whoever made the movie. so they don’t like people telling everyone to bring their own snacks cuz that’s how they make money.

AMC gives no fucks about bringing in your own snacks. Or soda, water, etc. They may bat an eye if you show up with the whole Taco Bell menu but for the most part they don't care. My best friend is in upper management at AMC.

@@psilocylence the people who make and distribute the films get the box office the theater doesn’t get any. The theater just sells you concessions and that’s how they make all their revenue. It’s really not that hard if you actually think about it.

So I actually worked at a movie theater (left on good terms I worked at harkins) and how theater revenue works is that cash spent on tickets goes to the producers/studios in (I’ve been dubious of this however since I’m 90% sure they got a small cut but that’s beside the point) most money made came from the popcorn,soda,candy, alcohol (pre Covid) ,and food. Marked up around 200-300%.
Sucks he got fired but there is a contract when you get hired and a general rule of filming which isn't taken seriously but is a rule and grounds for being fired. So it dont matter. Also something people don't know is even taking pics or filming the outside of the theater is illegal as well... so if they wanted to fire him they can. End of story

Yeah I think it's technically false advertising. Imagine the first Karen who comes up and tries that phrase to get a free pass and doesn't get one. I don't know if the company could get sued seeing as it isn't official company marketing or advertising, rather just some dude's TikTok. But he has the logo prominently displayed and made the claim while in uniform, so it could just lead to a bad time for everyone all around.

False advertising would apply only if he was part of their advertising department and/or he was doing this under the instruction of AMC as then it would be the company saying "Hey, come here, find this ticket and go to the window and say this phrase to get free stuff." with no intention of giving said free stuff, not just an employee being stupid. That said, I'm not sure firing was the right path for this one, unless he already had a history of stupid stuff he should have gotten a warning and made to make a video telling everyone that his previous video about the tickets wasn't true, it was just him being stupid. If he refused to make a video, then fire him and publicly make an announcement that "this video *show clip of video* is wrong, it was an employee being stupid and saying things and making promises he had no right to say or promise, he was fired and this offer will not be honored as it wasn't us that actually made the offer. Please do not come in looking for tickets as there aren't any, and please do not expect to get free stuff by saying 'Welcome to the movies.', there is no continuous offer of this type going on."
@@Skyfire_The_Goth totally agree, that's why I mentioned that's he's just some dude on TikTok rather than their official advertising or marketing team, so they probably wouldn't get sued. But it's still a grey area and they'd still potentially get dragged by people who believed the guy in uniform and didn't get what he promised. It just really wasn't a good idea on his part.
I also don't necessarily think he should have been fired. Instead they should have first reminded him to be mindful of the repercussions of his actions when he's representing the company, and then made an effort to work with him on advertising/marketing ideas seeing as how he clearly has the knack for it and might bring something new to the table.

As a guy that worked at a theatre for 5 years... I totally knew he was getting fired.
And at least at regal, we were told each theatre only collects something like .10 cents or less per ticket. It might be actually be much lower but yes that’s mostly why the food is so ridiculously expensive.
Regal makes way more than that, closer to 50% of tickets, but the average location has an operating cost of over $100,000 a month. People don't realize how expensive it is to run a theatre. $5 profit from a ticket doesn't help much when the electric bill is $20,000. Thats where the $11 popcorn comes from

If it actually works you can literally be arrested for stealing. She most definitely should have been fired because not only is she losing her business money (which affects the employee's hours more than employers) she is also setting millions of kids up for being arrested. There's no way a place like that wouldn't immediately stop you and keep you there until the police arrived. Paint guy did waste product and did it at work during work hours, so that part is valid.
The paint guy probably took the video while a customer asked the paint to be mixed, and then he used his own money to buy the paints... The blueberry thing wasnt even his fault, just the dumb customers (since the paint was bought with his own money and he just mixed in blueberries for fun)

Paint mixer guy got fired for one thing, thinking outside of the box and trying to advertise the company. Why was he fired for that? Because the big wigs didn't think of it themselves and they don't like the little man stepping on their toes.
I made alot of good ideas at my job. (Too many details to explain) but I told my VP many ideas about how to utilize wasted space to have food trucks pay us to serve at our airport and to resell unused fuel to other sources who use it for things other then aircraft.
Both ideas were shot down. It just makes no sense because both ideas would make a profit out of things that otherwise would of been wasted.
So instead I started taking mini sticky notes and writing "treasure hints" and putting them all over the place. None of them lead to anything and theres about 100+ notes scattered all over the base.
May as well send them all on a wild goose chase for years on end after I leave for my new job next week.
