    The valve and spring portafilters work really good. The other type makes fake Crema because the liquid sprays out the single hole in the bottom and makes aeration and foam.

    • @JohnnyWuzzisname
      @JohnnyWuzzisname 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hey hey hey all, after brewing with the valve/spring pf, my pucks are puddles. Espresso tastes good though, nice crema and hot temp. Does the puddle on top happen to you too? Getting pretty coarse with my grind. Started at the finest on my burr grinder

    • @dmcerrrmmmm
      @dmcerrrmmmm  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'd advise maybe tamping a bit firmer with a coarser grind and underfilling can cause this problem too so maybe fill the portafilter a little more so when you twist it in place there is no gap or little gap between where the water comes out and the compacted coffee.

    • @alchemicalanarchist
      @alchemicalanarchist 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JohnnyWuzzisname Yea the pucks stay a bit wet in the portafilter. I ended up buying a knock box and I give it a few taps to empty out the filter and then rinse it out. The pucks do come out a bit wet still. If you grind too fine water will have trouble going through the filter and will be a bit slow. If you grind too coarse the coffee will seem weaker.

    • @tomboyer5608
      @tomboyer5608 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@JohnnyWuzzisname You want an espresso machine with a 3 way solenoid which sucks out the excess water and leaves you with a dry puck. But a 3 way solenoid requires a lot of maintenance and tends to get clogged with hard water deposits. So I actually think knocking wet grounds into your knock box is the lesser of two evils. We keep our knock box in the sink which helps with splattering.

    • @JohnnyWuzzisname
      @JohnnyWuzzisname 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@tomboyer5608 I'm glad to know that it isn't necessarily a malfunctioning machine then, cheers!
      I have learned since posting that if I use the steamer after brewing my 'spresso, it dries the puck out. So I make capps or frothy lattes, or just blow off some steam

    I have 2 problems with the pressurised baskets: the filter can be tapped out with the used coffee puck, which is a bit messy, and the single hole in the basket gets clogged too easily. For greater convenience I use the 2nd type.

    • @dmcerrrmmmm

    Hi, im using the Delonghi Dedica and i can make espresso shots using the 1 shot basket, but when i change it to the 2 shot basket, no water or espresso comes out. And it is pressurized and difficult to remove the porta filter. How do i solve this?

    • @dmcerrrmmmm
      @dmcerrrmmmm  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      Try less coffee in the basket...over filling or over tamping will stop water flow causing a build up of pressure if you wait after the machine has stopped for a few minutes the pressure should subside and the handle should release without spraying coffee everywhere.

    • @tomboyer5608
      @tomboyer5608 2 ปีที่แล้ว

      My guess is you're using too fine a grind. Remember pressurized you can get away with slightly coarser grind. I aim for a medium-sand consistency (which is 6 on my old Gaggia MDF).
      Also, with a pressurized portafilter, you do not want to tamp. Just measure in loosely and use your finger to knock off any excess. You'll get a better shot untamped.

    Thank you for the video this is what I was looking for. What is the make and model for the last design pressurized filter? I have the second design and my coffee is tasting pretty bad lately. I have tried to clean with soap and pressure with my palm, now I am thinking that may have been a mistake because the water flows too freely when I make a shot and the coffee tastes weak and bitter. I want to get new filters that I can clean properly and the last design seems like the best option.

    I got new rubber seal design. They are easy to remove and clean but one major issue with them. The rubber part develops bad small after some time and it can go into coffee.
    Anyone know how to clean them properly?

    • @dmcerrrmmmm
      @dmcerrrmmmm  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I've never noticed a bad smell and I use mine a lot...soap and water would be my guess... I'm not sure if the rubber part detaches from the filter to clean as I've never tried for fear of breaking it.

    • @tomboyer5608
      @tomboyer5608 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The seal seems to be silicone rubber so it's super durable and doesn't smell. I.e. it's not the rubber, it's just coffee oils. Just use a drop of diswashing liquid and a sponge. And every couple months disassemble the assembly and soak it in Cafiza which is a detergent that is great at coffee oils. It probably wouldn't hurt to run the silicone rubber seal through the dishwasher every so often....

    I actually found the rubber seal in the new filter a bit problematic. When you fill the single filter with 7 grams of coffee, the tip of the rubber handle still sticks out and that causes channeling when you press it with the tamper (it's pressed and then comes back and creates a cavity). Didn't you see this happening?

    • @dmcerrrmmmm
      @dmcerrrmmmm  4 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      I always fill the filter past the rubber handle.

      Me too

    • @tomboyer5608
      @tomboyer5608 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      That might be a downside to trying to modify a pressurized portafilter into a non-pressurized. If the coffee isn't a uniform thickness across the portafilter I could see channeling at the edges. However, other people seem to be reporting that this method works so maybe you just need to grind a little finer.
      I'm personally dubious about the whole pressurized-vs-nonpressurized thing. I've made espresso for 25 years and done a lot of both, and come full circle on pressurized. It's a super easy way to get consistently good coffee. The additional benefit from non-pressurized is a case of diminishing returns - every now and again you score a "god shot" but all the stars (grind, tamp, freshness of grind, temperature) have to line up perfectly. The problem is all the other times they don't line up and the non-pressurized setup means channeling and awful espresso or overgrinding/overtamping which results in no coffee at all. Nonpressurized, for me, meant a lot of bad shots and wasting a lot of coffee dialing in the grind. I hate to throw away coffee.
