    Funny thing, I use the Bar S franks as fish bait. Catfish and bass love them! I usually slice them in 1 to 1 and a half inch pieces, put them in a ziploc bag, add garlic powder and cherry or strawberry flavored Jello. The juices of the hot dog absorb the Jello and garlic powder. You can leave them in the fridge for 24 hours up to a week. It can be a bit stinky, but the longer you leave them in the fridge, the better it becomes. Catfish go crazy for them.

      Michigan used to have the highest standards on what goes into hotdogs. The federal government tried to get the state to lower the standards regarding pig snouts and stuff. This was back in the 70s. I'm not sure if the standards were lowered by the state.

    I would love to see a review of beef hot dogs! My husband prefers all-beef hot dogs (and won't eat ones with no beef at all -- although he will eat Vienna sausages!), and my daughter has trouble digesting pork, so I've been buying beef hot dogs for a long time.

      Do you have an Aldi near you? Their Angus beef uncured dogs at 6 for $4 have become a favorite of mine. The beefy flavor really comes through. Almost like a sausage instead of a dog. I brought some to a family outing and only one person didn't care for them. She said they were too salty, which I really don't agree with. She got the last one on the grill and It was way overdone so that could be the reason.

      @@Toutab Funny, why? I do about 75 percent of my shopping there. Cheaper and a lot more convenient since I don't have to walk miles of aisles through one of those stupid supercenters to get the basics I need. Plus they have a great turnover meaning their veggies and produce are fresher and last much longer.

    2:18 - So, about 20 years ago I had the chance to tour the Plantation turkey plant. We watched the entire run of processing. The mechanically separated meat refers to one of the last steps in processing where a powered scraping like tool is taken to the turkey carcass after the major cuts like breasts, thighs, legs and wings have already been harvested. The scraper is used on the carcass to remove any remaining small pieces of meat. The meat is combined with spices and fillers and then sent off to be extruded into bologna, hotdogs and other turkey loaf products. No doubt it’s a similar process for pork, beef and chicken.

    I agree with your ranking thoroughly! Oscar Mayer uncured hot dogs are my favorite. Bar S, however, I wouldn't feed to a stray dog. On a side note, I grew up in the 1960s and became a young adult in the early '70s. When I started living on my own, I couldn't understand why the hot dogs were different from the ones I remembered eating growing up. It wasn't until I purchased Schwan's hot dogs in the casings years later that I realized what I was missing: the natural casings! Of course, now you can get them in the casings, at whatever premium price. But for a good basic hot dog, Oscar Mayer wins for me.

    I do wonder about kosher all-beef hotdogs. My favorite is Hebrew National knockwurst, and occasionally those are sold buy-one-get-one-free (that’s 12-ounce packages) so they’re not as insanely expensive as usual. But I wonder what part of the kosher cow carcass they come from…

    • @OrbObserver
      @OrbObserver ปีที่แล้ว +8

      Probably scraps off the bone like most hotdogs are made. As long as a rabbi has declared the cows kosher then it's fine.

      As pointed out, they likely are the same cuts of meat, just... Kosher. The whole point of sausages like hotdogs are to make use of otherwise discarded pieces. Eat the quality steak for dinner tonight, have sausages available to last you for awhile longer after the good cuts are consumed.

    Hot Dog Story Time: A while ago Oscar Mayer came out with "Big And Juicy" hot dogs. They were big. I bought some, cooked according to the directions (normally I wouldn't bother with the directions but I wanted to give them their best shot), and ... Holy of holies ... the snap when you bit into them was top notch and they were the juiciest hot dogs I've ever had! I don't buy hot dogs often so it was a while before I bought them again. I prepared them accordingly and .... blah. Just hot dogs. Where'd the snap go? Why weren't they juicy like last time? I dunno, but I believe they stopped selling them so they probably knew what bait and switch they had pulled.

    In the UK we would call these "Hot Dogs" mechanically seperated meat, but most would cook by placing them in a pan of simmering water for 5 mins normally served on buns with onions/ketchup/mustard.
    We only have two or three different options.
    A sausage (aka Banger) is choice cuts of normally pork meat (chicked/beef also available) little filler, which would be either fried or cooked in the oven.
    We have a huge choice of sausages and all can be eaten either like a hotdog or very often they are served with mash, peas and gravy!
    Confusingly if you go to a food stall in the UK (fare/market/roadside etc) and ask for a "hotdog" you will inevitably get a sausage in a hotdog bun!

    Love the channel and the videos. Just fyi, cherry powder is a useful natural ingredient that contains Vitamin C (which helps hot dogs to cure) and adds nutrition (which hot dogs are not really known for). Cherry powder also gives the hot dogs a rosy color. (EDIT!--also cherry powder is a very common ingredient in Chinese food, so that might account for the flavor!)
