The Kirkland (costco) all beef dogs are shamefully good. If you're feeling bougie and can find them, the Boars Head hot dogs of any style are very, very good.
I like Nathans because they has that natural casing that gives it that 'SNAP' when you bit into it. And I gotta have it grilled! Preferably over charcoal. All the way from the West Coast, you got me SPRUNG!!

Now, I live in Georgia (20 years) and we have 'Publix' stores around the 'ATL' where I live and the shelves always have em' in stock. 😉👍I can't find em' in other stores around here, only at 'Publix'.

Well charred all day long. Back in Indiana all hot dogs were a dime a dozen. Just so so, all were a processed slurry. Now being in Wisconsin there is a big difference. As for a particular brand? Sorry my wife does most of the shopping. BUT FOR TASTE? Up here the hot dogs kick butt. The taste is nice with good flavor. But the casings are where they shine. Man they have a nice snap to them. MMMMM they are delicious and enjoyable. I’ll have to get name of what we have. I would have to had to skip the bun for doing a taste test. I’m a true carnivore 🦁🦖. God bless.
After seeing this I decided to do my own personal testing of local Michigan franks. It was Koegel vs Dearborn. Dearborn wins this round, but further testing may be needed. With a nice, mid level char.
As long as you don't opt for the multi-meat dog and stick to an all-beef dog, you probably will be fine. As a Chicago guy, Vienna is what most of the stands use. Though traditional, I eschew the boiled dog/steamed bun, and opt for grilling the dog and definitely toasting the buns. I have already gotten very positive comments with the 1/4lb beef, Makers Mark dog from Sams and the all-beef Aldi option.
This is the first time I've seen a review where they've said "well, they're all pretty good and you can't pick a bad one" after really doing a good bit of research lol. Subbed.
More than 1/2 a century ago I grew up on King Cotton dogs. They were similar to the red dogs you're fond of. Kroger sells them now. The package hasn't changed, but the recipe has. They are not nearly as good as they once were. The seasoning tastes the same, but they are made primarily of chicken now, not pork like they were once made. I think the best red dog today is Zweigle's Natural Casing hot dog "Texas Brand" made in Rochester, NY. But I think this brand's white dogs are an even better choice.
I was the maker of the red hotdogs in my towns Parks and Rec department in Ole Ahoskie. We steamed em addition to the buns. Would turn the water bright red when we drained the tank at night. You hit it right on the head being a feeling like home. I'd throw some chili and mustard on those bad boys and chow down. I've found my favorite to be Sabrett brand.
Back in 2001 consumer reports did an entire issue on hotdogs. At the time, the highest quality one they rested was strangely enough the 7-11 hotdogs. They even surpassed Hebrew National in meat quality and lack of fillers.
If I'm going to get dog for a special holiday or outdoor grilling has to be a local made dog with natural casing and and smoked not flavored with liquid smoke and never shrink wrapped in plastic. I usually get the jumbo jumbo franks from Bar-S and fix them grilled or deep fried. My kids prefer the Bar-S over the higher priced dog and can tell them from the other 1/4pounder brands.
I grew up going to the original Nathan's in Brooklyn, so I'm partial. One of my favorites is Sabrett's tho, and that's what you'll find at most NYC carts. We don't have the red guys up here, but now I'm interested! Thanks for the video Matt!
Of the ones I have heard of on this list Nathan's gets my vote. Hebrew are good as well but they are just so expensive. The rest of the hot dogs I have tried over the years have a funky aftertaste.
@thehungryhussey Kirkland hot dogs are basic all beef franks. Nothing fancy, which why they are called franks instead of sausages. Its the same hotdogs you get in the food court at Costco... except not as long and not boiled or steamed like in the food court.
@@sidneyvandykeii3169 wrong on both counts. The hot dogs that are sold inside Costco's food court are the same ones that are sold on the shelves. Costco actually manufacturer these things inside of their own facilities to save them money. Also a Frank is made completely out of pork. That's why they're called a frankfurter. A hot dog can be made out of beef, chicken or a mixture of beef chicken and pork.
Thank you Matthew. Of all the ones you tested, theres only 4 of those available in North Central indiana. Hot dogs are so underated! Can be "dressed" up multiple ways❤
I did the same test.... Hebrew National won in a cakewalk - distant second was Nathan's but the surprise was Circle Bar S Jumbo dogs..... they were by far the cheapest but were not bad .....
Out here in California we have a brand called Farmer John. Their hot dogs, hot links, and Polish sausage are some of the best I've tasted. They've been around since 1935 and also package sliced ham for sandwiches, bacon, and breakfast sausage. They are best known IMHO for their foot long Dodger Dogs which are a fool long but no longer sold at Dodger Stadium or manufactured by Farmer John. The Dodgers and Farmer John could come to a mutually satisfying agreement after the 2019 season so the company stopped making them. Before then you could buy the foot longs in grocery stores. As far as pricing goes, it depends on what the hot dogs are made of. Chicken and pork weiner will run about $3.49 and the all beef franks will run about $5.49. I like to cook all my dogs over medium heat until the skin is just short of burnt and the dogs have plumped up enough for the skin to just start to burst. Mustard, dill relish, and onions. Heaven.
As far as national brands, I’m probably not as picky as I should be. But the hotdog of my childhood was Fanestil’s From Emporia Kansas, it’s a very regional east central Kansas thing made from beef and pork, no poultry, and the best I’ve ever had hands down.
I like Best Beef Hot Dogs. I boil mine first, get most of the salt out of it and then I’ll fry them up or grill. 👍👍👍. Then put chili, cheese and sauerkraut on it. 😋😋😋

Hi there HH! First time, long time. Thanks for all your great content! I'd say give the Boars Head hot dogs in the natural casing a try... Excellent taste w/ a good snap to it... Only downside is that it tends to be a little pricey. Have a good one and enjoy the summer grilling season!
I’ve had tons growing up in upstate NY and can’t get better than Zweigles red or white hot dogs!! I’m out west now and can’t get them unless it’s through Amazon for an outrageous price.

Zweigles out of Rochester, NY. The pop open natural casing ones. No idea who might sell them in other places, but they do ship!! Lots of W NY transplants down South who missed their Zweigles!
I've never seen bright red hot dogs either. There are some natural casing sausages that were both spicy and red, but none of the hot dogs around The Puget Sound were red like that.
Can't believe someone finally posted a Jesse Jones hot dog! A local delicacy. Topped with some homemade hot dog chili with Cole slaw and texas Pete on top, and that's a winner! I would try the Ballpark All beef frank I I were you. Closest thing you can get to a "Stadium dog", unless you can find some Smithfield weiners. I hate the original BallPark, but the Ballpark Beef Original (Not the Angus) is tied for #1 with Jesse Jones for me. Nathan #2. I don't care for the Hebrew National too much. Not really a fan of the Gualtney either.
I always looked forward to vacation time in NC for Jesse Jones red hot dogs and the Jesse Jones hot dog Chili that came in a smaller “sausage” roll along with mustard and onions. I still get there about once a year and load up on the dogs to take home and put them in the freezer. I can’t find the Jesse Jones Hot Dog Chili anymore. Shout out where I can find it.

I love the Nathan’s and the Hebrew National. The Hebrew National doesn’t repeat on me and it’s my favorite. The problem is that they only have 6 in a package in Walmart and 7 in a package at Costco. They are way cheaper at Costco if you’re a member and you get 4 packages of them. I’m not a member so I just buy Nathan’s and they have 8 in a package but I prefer Hebrew National. I went to Walmart and looked for the Bubba burgers and they were almost $14 compared to the other brands that were under $10. I bought the market side ones and they are great
Nathan’s well charred is the way.

Vienna Beef. If you can't find them or live out of the Midwest, the Parkview brand sold at Aldi is the same thing.

I went to Walmart and looked for the Bubba burgers and they were almost $14 compared to the other brands that were under $10. I bought the market side ones and they are great
Jesse Jones is the best. They are from my area. Carolina packers is next. You have to buy them fresh
