  • Even if you’re not a hot dog fan, you’ve probably found yourself hosting a barbecue or party where you’ve had to buy them at the grocery store. After you’ve had your Steve Martin-esque tantrum about buns being sold in packs of 12 while hot dogs are sold in packs of eight, you’ve probably wondered about which hot dog brand is actually the best. Should you shell out the extra money for Nathan’s Famous, or will no one taste the difference if you don’t tell them? Let’s take a look at the best and worst hot dogs to buy at the grocery store.

As a kid, my family never ate out. Absolutely never, because we couldn't afford it. Mom's "go to" fast meal was a couple of cans of chili with a package of hotdogs cut up into the chili, served over a slice of bread with chopped onions on top.
I usually prefer Nathan's or Hebrew National hot dogs, but the price seemed high for something to chop into canned chili during Covid. Aldi has a pack of 8 hotdogs for 95 cents that are marked "original" that actually taste like 1960's hot dogs. Definitely better than anything I've bought from Oscar Meyer in decafes.

You get them in a 5 lb package all connected to each other-- just like in the old cartoons! I tried an actual Nathan's Hot Dog while on a trip to New York City at a Nathan's location on Long Island!! It wasn't a bad hot dog. I actually ate four of them, two with chili and two with just mustard!! Not the best food I have ever eaten mind you, but I can say that the Hot Dogs Nathan's makes are way better then cheap store hot dogs, and I can understand why they are so popular!! They do have their own "flavor" and their texture is unique to their brand, which is NOT a bad thing!! I would enjoy having a few more Nathan's Hot Dogs, if they had a location near where I live here in New York State, but I am too far away from the city to just drive there for a Hot Dog reasonably!! Their hot dog chili on the other hand is out of this world, and I do have to say a Nathan's Chili Dog is a treat to look forward too....If I ever go back to New York City!! Great review. Regarding lack of taste, my wife and I have noticed recently how ground beef, not uncommonly, has no taste whatsoever e.g. hamburgers grilled outside. That experience has led me to wonder if fillers with no are being mixed into the ground beef. Historically there was a time when things like sawdust or chalk were put into meat to increase profit margin.

    • @jacksmith-vs4ct

unlikely they would be sued into oblivion for putting filler in without it showing up on the label due to the potential for allergies probably try a ground beef with more fat or a better brand though also if you got covid it can mess up your sense of taste for a long time though it does slowly fade.

Actually, those of us who grew up in MICHIGAN in the 1960's know that not only the real Oscar Mayer wiener is gone, so are all the others. Why? Because Michigan had higher standards for hot dogs than the rest of the country. Only skeletal meat could be used. No lips, udders or other crap. The hot dog manufacturers didn't like this because they had to have two lines, one for Michigan and one for the rest of the country. So they pressured Michigan to change its law and they won. Hot dogs have gone downhill ever since.

About 25 years ago I spent some time at the US Army War College in Carlisle, PA. In their cafeteria they served a short fat hotdog that was the best I have ever had. Unfortunately I have no idea what the brand was. My second all time favorite is the "dinner frank" from Dearborn Meats in the Detroit area. In general, I think you probably find better dogs among smaller local producers than the big supermarket brands.

You missed the mark a little bit. Natural casing is what keeps the flavor of a hotdog sealed inside. The top natural casing
hotdogs are Sabrett, Nathans, and Best brand. Boars Head natural casing used to be on that list, but a few years ago, they
changed the recipe. I'll have to try the uncured version to see how that tastes. Hebrew National has no natural casing
but they are pretty good. You can't boil them though because they have no natural casing and the flavor will be lost in the
    water.

I grew up in New York City. On weekends my friends and I would go to Coney Island for some one foot Nathan's Hotdogs and Fries. To this day NATHAN'S IS ABSOLUTELY THE BEST HOTDOGS IN THE WORLD.
Now if you are in Manhattan you have the SECOND best which is Saberett hotdogs. Then the next best is Hebrew National hotdogs.
Does anyone know what a Kanish is?
Now we all know that on a hot summer's day a hotdog usually hangs between a man's legs. But instead of chewing on it, you must suck it until it's very tender. Condomments not required.

You are correct, it does not belong on a dog. I live near Chicago and some places will kick you out if you ask for Ketchup. Chicago has long had a jokingly adversarial relationship with the condiment. It's a time-honored tradition to rib people who put ketchup on hot dogs, and some restaurants honor the history by refusing to offer ketchup or lovingly kicking out people who request it on their dog. I also know people who put Mayo on a dog.

A restaurant at which I worked bought a case of Bar-S for the buffet. Boiled they fell apart. They were only used one day, and the remainder were given to a farmer for his pigs. I don't know if the pigs rejected them too.
Sam's Club switched from using Nathan's at their pizza/hot dog cafe to using their own Member's Mark brand. The MM brand is similar but not quite up to the Nathan standard.
