In a matter of days, how many days tho, a whole 20 years or what? Plus i do not believe in any way anyone can play an instrument like violin in a couple of days, as you don't only have to master sightreading but also technique and another one i can't remember. I mean someone could play violin in a couple of days but not master the whole thing, as there is a lot to violin that what meets the eye. Soooooo, u can play violin in a couple of days, but you'll just be a noob with huge sunglasses and a stick. 😐
Mike Boyd makes me rethink learning entirely, I love seeing him take on challenges, show his progress and show his results all while telling us how many hours of honest practice it has taken. Last year in a strange twist of fate I found myself able to practice on a violin and it took me 10 minutes to decide to put it down and do something useful. If it takes only this long for him to learn to play then, granted he may have a lot more musical grounding than I do already, why shouldn't I? I would be proud if I could achieve this with 50 hours of practice, never mind 13 hours, I've spent more than than in the last 30 days just cleaning.
He does this because he plays guitar, where you bend the string up and down quickly to create vibrato. Sorry not the greatest guitar-vibrato-explainer.
i'm a violin myself, and i have been playing for 7 years now. i know this was a very challenging task, and it was amazing to me that he could already do vibrato and use the bow properly. good job mike!
It's amazing how you could do this without anyone telling you anything about playing the violin, and with enough effort you could do this. Really inspiring.
SBB1809 Who ever said the greatest musicians didn’t have teachers? Where would they get their inspiration from? Maybe they didn’t have a teacher who gave instructions and taught them notes, beats and songs, but maybe an idol? That’s technically a teacher. And even If they did have teachers who give instructions and teach them music, who decided that everyone who has those teachers are needy and bad musicians? Yes they shouldn’t rely on their teacher’s instructions, but that doesn’t make them untalented.
That is inaccurate. You may not be able to teach greatness, but you do need guidance on technique, theory, and other aspects of music to achieve greatness.

You did well, though I noticed you had a lot of your quintuplet brothers to help you. You have inspired me and I know it will take me at least a week to better that. Well done. Jimmy.
I've spent 5 years of my life learning the violin and all I can say is that ur progress is amazing. Also taking into consideration that u've had no teacher and only been practicing for a month that just makes it epic. I have some advices though ; buy a shoulder rest as playing with it is far more comfortable, loosen the tension of ur bow it just makes it bounce more often on the strings, and finally the right hand should b on a straight line with ur below-the-elbow arm (couldn't find a name for it XD). Other than that, u should keep up the good work, playing the violin is one of the skills that I could never regret acquiring.
This is definitely one of the coolest Learn Quicks to date. I absolutely love the sound of violins. I'm surprised it took you so little time to learn and play your own rendition of a great song. Congrats!
very impressive for the amount of time put into practicing. Your vibrato will be far more free if you straighten your left wrist. A really easy way to practice vibrato: put a rubber band on the scroll of the violin so that you can play with the scroll against the wall (the rubber band protects the instrument and provides grip) Just practice vibrato very slowly with each finger. Create rhythms with the vibrato and practice with those. If all goes well, you should have a very free, rich vibrato
Man that sounds amazing, still a little raspy sound, but you don’t get better with that unless you practice for many years lol. Again amazing!!! I kind of want to start violin myself!!
That moment when a youtuber only has about 12 hours of violin practice but is better than most of your classmates who have been playing for 4 years Hasn’t beaten me yet tho XD
GD DarkFlarex oh man, that’s rough tbh. Although his form is good with his left hand, but it appears stiff, and his right hand looks real stiff and out of form, so that’s at least a plus for us XD
Just wow! I am very impressed with the song you played. You are an example to everyone who says I am too old to learn or it is not my thing.. thanks for putting this video and making me realise that there is no age to learn and perfect something. This is motivation to me. Thanks again!!
Yeah but also you need some professional help for doing the techniques right like how to hold the bow and violin properly, reading notes and other symbols
@Ozer Arkis how much time do you recommend to practice each day? I would love to start the violin, but I worry that I won't have enough time because of school...
I just started playing violin a bout a mounth ago and it is scaring me as well i had say cringing me ot mayne i learn too fast, the vibrato isn't bad when u hear but it ain't proper violin vibrato
@@mazzimatti The bow is the wood stick with the hair that is pushed against the string. If its overtightened it will bend the wood too much and it will pretty much stay warped
What you achieved is damn impressive in 13 hours of work. Well done. However sticking with your theme, I think the final result shouldn't have been loops, but instead one full song played, even if through multiple layers.
I agree. A loop does't show the real thing. Of course it show tempo control, but with this really short loops is possible to try many times, pick the best short cut and insert in the music. Its more video editing then real violin. A full song without cuts show how it is going and i don't expect 5 minutes or complex songs. By the way, violin is a really hard instrument, i'm playing for some years and it's tricky. I liked the overall result.
Musical genius! Some people spend years learning to paint and a natural artist literally never took a class and creates breathtaking pieces. Sometimes it’s not fair, but still nothing can substitute hard work and dedication!
I’m in middle school and my schools orchestra is very good.except one but that’s beside the point. Also our teacher only pick people that are good.we are having a winter concert this year and I’m the main in the group (even tho I’m the youngest) sooooo yah but the violin is hard.
That part where you were talking about the bow bouncing on the string is really mostly because your bow is much too tight. The stick shouldn't be so tight that its straight, but it should have a downwards bend toward the hair. Also a shoulder rest would've made holding the violin much easier.
Make sure you have rosin on your bow so it doesn't slide. Start with plucking exercises, then focus on your bow, if you are going to keep doing this the you might want to get an essential elements book it teaches you everything
I absolutely love that you chose one of my all-time favorite songs for the outro! I am just now learning how to play and I will keep an eye out for your vidz
Shitty Voice it’s actually easier than reading notes. I’ve learned by ear and never regretted it.....how ever I would love it if I just grab sheet music and be like “yea I’ll just play this”
That’s actually how I learned all the songs for band and choir in high school since I was never able to learn sheet music. It’s actually pretty easy to do.
Shitty Voice it’s so much easier. just hum the notes to yourself and find them. I can admit it’s difficult at some times but I’ve learned a lot of songs like that
Try opening creativity, not going by the book. He wasn't restrianed by sheet music, he did what he felt was right. Just go on your own flow, sometimes it can better us as artists, athletes, or even people.
That was amazing! Shocking how well you play after only 9 hours. Wish I could learn so fast. I am getting my violin tuned tomorrow and I will pick up a cheat sheet that you suggested. Can't wait to get started!!
So my grandma walked by as I was watching this. After I explained what it was, she convinced me to try the ukulele and play some songs. After 2 and a half hours and 3 sore fingers, I was able to play Space Oddity, All Star, and the Steven Universe Theme and sing along! It's really fun, but it looks like a blister is forming on my right thumb. :/ Oh well.
This is INCREDIBLE! I just bought myself a beautiful violin on a whim with the dream of self teaching, and as someone who also plays music by ear this video was truly inspiring! So so awesome! Thank you for sharing! 😍
I’ve been learning violin for 3 years now and I’d suggest you get a teacher as self teaching violin will lead to many bad habits that will make you have to relearn all your technique. It’ll also be hard to know how to take care of the violin e.g. untightening the bow before storage. Although he made very large progress he still showed many bad habits.
Learning to crack a whip would be pretty cool. You could hit targets, grab things, make crack patterns. Your goal could be putting together a routine with eight different cracks, or something. I'm from Canada and it's winter here, so I can't really use mine right now. I'd ship you to borrow if you wanted! I've got some footage on my channel if you want, or you could just search whip cracking on TH-cam. I think the bumps and bruises would make for a great video, haha
Really nice ones are (like ones made out of kangaroo leather), but you can get them in nylon for relatively cheap. I'm not sure how many whip makers there are around your area, but in Canada and the US the lowest you could pay for a decent whip made out of nylon is at the lowest $100 USD. They vary in price depending on type, length, and how many strands are used to make them (because more strands make the whip more flexible). A good starter whip for the basics would be something like a five foot nylon bullwhip. Alternatively, you could spend about $60USD and make one out of nylon paracord and electrical tape
It's easy if you're a very curious person, you'll get to your goal faster and learn more along the way, just be interested in the instrument and you'll get there.
*Mike’s not wrong, learning music takes a lot of time. If you’re trying to learn how to play violin as fast as you can. Going off pitch would be the way to go, since learning the notes would take such a long time. So in his case, yes. Learning by pitch is the easiest way.*
wiebe V aken still, he can’t read sheet music making any ability on the violin limited. The only reason this works is because of the immense repetition of pop music.
@@wva6809 he might have perfect pitch which isn't impossible since like 25% of people have it which would make him be able to know that he is playing the right notes in which case the method of hearing music and sort of recomposing it is effective but if he doesnt have perfect pitch then he doesnt know if hes playing the right notes (he even said he doesnt know violin notes)
A quick tip is to keep your bow parallel to the bridge and the fingerboard. Another would be that the closer your bow is to the fingerboard, the lower the volume. The closer the bow is to the bridge, the louder the volume is (not too close though) Also weight affects this too. (Also keep your scroll up) But other than that I think you're good.

I only play piano but still, watching that bow slide around so much anxiety
Wow, dude your seriously talented
You're* not.
Too bloody good young man.
I am an ancient Scot who has just today first picked up a violin and tortured a note out of it.
You did well, though I noticed you had a lot of your quintuplet brothers to help you.
You have inspired me and I know it will take me at least a week to better that.
Well done.
Jimmy.
+Big Dog good luck ancient Scotsman. I'm sure you be sounding sweet as a nut in no time. Enjoy!
I would call it your forearm 🙂
This is definitely one of the coolest Learn Quicks to date. I absolutely love the sound of violins. I'm surprised it took you so little time to learn and play your own rendition of a great song. Congrats!
You’re one inspirational man mike, never forget that.
Thank you Mike! The editing was very nice, its always a big pleassure to watch your videos. Greetings from Germany!
so nice to hear where everyone is from :)
Mike Boyd I'm from US and A
Ahhhh, lol as a violinist this is hard to watch but it’s amazing how u progressed, awesome
Belagu lo
@@halohola2002 apanya belagu lol
akwoakaoak numpang lewat
wow that was amazing! I loved the way that you edited all the different parts of the song
very impressive for the amount of time put into practicing.
He should also straighten it so his notes are more 'clear' if I could say so.
Also, if he wants to store it, he should loosen the strings and vibrato.
Man that sounds amazing, still a little raspy sound, but you don’t get better with that unless you practice for many years lol. Again amazing!!! I kind of want to start violin myself!!
What are you talking about? That sounds horrible!
ever tried playing a violin?
This man has the opposite of adhd
Another symptom of ADHD is actually hyper focus, so ya never know
@@matthewbrooder9414 exactly, I have adhd and sometimes I spend 8 hours on something and it feels like 1 hour. I have to be interested tho.
@@lkctom2546 exactly
I have adhd and this is something I would do
or just adhd
That moment when a youtuber only has about 12 hours of violin practice but is better than most of your classmates who have been playing for 4 years
Hasn’t beaten me yet tho XD
MLPStormFly I've been playing violin for 5 years and yet he's still better.
GD DarkFlarex oh man, that’s rough tbh. Although his form is good with his left hand, but it appears stiff, and his right hand looks real stiff and out of form, so that’s at least a plus for us XD
is he familiar with a lot of other instruments? or maybe he's just blessed O: !
They might have been "playing" for 4 years, but actual practice time at home = less than two hours.
spirit469 oof man I play at least an hour every day. I’m going for a violinist for a job
At the end of the year you should make a recap video of all the skills you've learned and show you can still do it! :)
this is in the pipeline
The ending was a bittersweet symphony, indeed.
Just wow! I am very impressed with the song you played. You are an example to everyone who says I am too old to learn or it is not my thing.. thanks for putting this video and making me realise that there is no age to learn and perfect something. This is motivation to me. Thanks again!!
Being a violin player I understand how hard it is love ur determination salute bro 👍👍👍👍👍👍
I discovered this channel now and I'm already addicted on it !!
Hahaha what the guy said in the shop was so true , it’s all about the practice at home. If only I ever did some 🤦♂️
You know nothing
Yeah but also you need some professional help for doing the techniques right like how to hold the bow and violin properly, reading notes and other symbols
Me: *plays for 5 years* rate: 4/10
Mike:* plays for 7 hours* rate: 6/10
How do you not get at least decent to the point where you can play a major concerto in 5 years
Go practice 40 hours la
Yes
me: plays for 8 years noice i get for 8/10
@Ozer Arkis how much time do you recommend to practice each day? I would love to start the violin, but I worry that I won't have enough time because of school...
1:03 - Sticks on to the what?! What instrument are you playing again? Haha.
haha I've played guitar too long i guess...
I feel you, man. I can play a little guitar, and I'd be so lost without frets.
Mike Boyd I love your videos
Your wrist touching the violin is scaring me
also the overtightened bow and how he holds the bow in general o.O
the bow being over tightened is scaring me as well...
Sophie omg I was looking for someone to say that
Yes
I just started playing violin a bout a mounth ago and it is scaring me as well i had say cringing me ot mayne i learn too fast, the vibrato isn't bad when u hear but it ain't proper violin vibrato
I’m so jealous that mike learnt more violin in 1 day than i did in a year
@Ozer Arkis dayummm
@Ozer Arkis and if drums do not work, just ditch one stick and stand inf front of the orchestra
I played the violin for 5 years but since you are a beginner and learning in a month I say you did better than most people
That bow is over-tightened
Varg Fallon thank you I thought nobody noticed happy I’m not the only one
now that I look it triggers me everytime I see it.
What’s a bow and what’s wrong with it being overtightened
@@mazzimatti The bow is the wood stick with the hair that is pushed against the string. If its overtightened it will bend the wood too much and it will pretty much stay warped
You’re right.
What you achieved is damn impressive in 13 hours of work. Well done. However sticking with your theme, I think the final result shouldn't have been loops, but instead one full song played, even if through multiple layers.
39 days*
Lul when he said “fretboard”
He plays guitar so.
Musical genius! Some people spend years learning to paint and a natural artist literally never took a class and creates breathtaking pieces. Sometimes it’s not fair, but still nothing can substitute hard work and dedication!
1:19 you sound like a middle school orchestra
whats that song?
Pretty sure it's the Game of Thrones theme
chiken da Christmas same but worse
I’m in middle school and my schools orchestra is very good.except one but that’s beside the point. Also our teacher only pick people that are good.we are having a winter concert this year and I’m the main in the group (even tho I’m the youngest) sooooo yah but the violin is hard.
chiken da Christmas lol
That part where you were talking about the bow bouncing on the string is really mostly because your bow is much too tight. The stick shouldn't be so tight that its straight, but it should have a downwards bend toward the hair. Also a shoulder rest would've made holding the violin much easier.
Nikit Desai it also has to do with his arm movements because your bow can be tight and it can still sound good but yes I agree it’s to tight
Nikit Desai honestly that is my biggest pet peeve
I agree
and because of his super tense hand
Make sure you have rosin on your bow so it doesn't slide. Start with plucking exercises, then focus on your bow, if you are going to keep doing this the you might want to get an essential elements book it teaches you everything
He was using rosin powder was on the fingerboard
(And when you get further into Essential elements, starting Suzuki is also recommended
Ashton Lasater it was his bowing he’s not using his wrist
I absolutely love that you chose one of my all-time favorite songs for the outro! I am just now learning how to play and I will keep an eye out for your vidz
By ear.. damnnnnnn, I give you a sht load of credit
It’s actually pretty easy to do.
playing by ear is arguably easier then actually learning how to read music
I just watch YT videos where they show you what to click and for how long (piano)
Shitty Voice it’s so much easier. just hum the notes to yourself and find them. I can admit it’s difficult at some times but I’ve learned a lot of songs like that
Fantastic choice! Bittersweet symphony :)
ive been trying for 2 years and you already passed me
ive been trying to play bitter sweet Symphony as well
Lmao same 😂
Try opening creativity, not going by the book. He wasn't restrianed by sheet music, he did what he felt was right. Just go on your own flow, sometimes it can better us as artists, athletes, or even people.
0:44 - I have no idea how to hold this
0:45 - Perfect now hold
Learn to fly an airplane
Sruli Zuckerman the next 9/11
he would have to take a class which goes against his theme
I don't think he would be able to get the full thing within a week
That kind of know should be teach by other. Like the violin.
Roman Everroad or go in a flight simulator
Well done learning it
Specific Love Creations he didn’t learn it he played it there’s a difference
omgggg that bow is wayyyy too tight!!!!! ling ling is disappointed...

If I see another fucking Twosetviolin comment
@@lvbboi9 You're going to get mad and some stranger on the net will fucking punch your insecure face?
I really admire your persistence. Imagine what the world would be like if we all had your focus and dedication? 😊😊
That was amazing! Shocking how well you play after only 9 hours. Wish I could learn so fast. I am getting my violin tuned tomorrow and I will pick up a cheat sheet that you suggested. Can't wait to get started!!

Me too
Same lmao
I see your profile picture through the corner of my eye and all I see is a blue bulbasaur

:/ Oh well.
It should be calloused by know if you kept it up. Did you?
I love space oddity
Damn...nice dude
I think the bumps and bruises would make for a great video, haha
such an original idea! Are they expensive to buy?
Really nice ones are (like ones made out of kangaroo leather), but you can get them in nylon for relatively cheap. I'm not sure how many whip makers there are around your area, but in Canada and the US the lowest you could pay for a decent whip made out of nylon is at the lowest $100 USD. They vary in price depending on type, length, and how many strands are used to make them (because more strands make the whip more flexible). A good starter whip for the basics would be something like a five foot nylon bullwhip. Alternatively, you could spend about $60USD and make one out of nylon paracord and electrical tape
Ling Ling: *laughs in the distance*
I was hoping you were going to play game of thrones
Jacob Williamson way too simple
Spongebob lol are you guys being serious?
Disagree XD
He did. Watch the video again. (1:18)
Rick van Osta that's song of storms iirc
I've been playing violin for 6 years and I'm not really but watching this, I'm impressed
Very well done, quite fast! You should do a video of learning to count cards!
Someone tell this man to clean his violin

rosin sees strings: they were clean you thought mhm now you got a cloth
Yes pls
Yea thank you it was killing me
OMG ikr? My violin never gets that dirty
Davie504 was proud when he saw u playing the violin like a bass
You are awesome, just 13 hours of practice and your music is so good. Good to hear you to playing on the violin!
I might learn to play a violin because of you
It's really hard, my brother mastered it because he had to practice since he was 6, now he's 29 or so.
'-_- great.. i just bought a violin.. just for fun, to see if i could learn it.. very demotivating.. well.. i'll be fun.. i guess
Denny H don't worry, if you keep practicing then you could achieve your goal in 6 months... maybe.
How is it going? I might get one aswell :) Dont give up man
It's easy if you're a very curious person, you'll get to your goal faster and learn more along the way, just be interested in the instrument and you'll get there.
Mike: It is easier to learn music by pitch, instead of actually reading the music.
Me: 🤦
*Mike’s not wrong, learning music takes a lot of time. If you’re trying to learn how to play violin as fast as you can. Going off pitch would be the way to go, since learning the notes would take such a long time. So in his case, yes. Learning by pitch is the easiest way.*
Except that when someone is new to music he doesn't have can't differenciate the notes....
@@abdulazizelijahfanan1632 Yes, but he isn't new to music. He has been playing guitar for a very long time.
wiebe V aken still, he can’t read sheet music making any ability on the violin limited.
