I just saw this video for the first time. Back in the day , my best friend bought one just like that. It was yellow with black trim. It came from the dealer with Hooker big tube headers in the trunk. He and i spent all day Saturday , and Sunday morning installing them. When we were finished, we went down this country road , with the headers open. We pulled into a church driveway during morning services. All the windows were open at the little country church. He backed out onto the road, and launched it just like in your video. I can still remember the beautiful sound of that engine being power shifted at 6000 + rpm. I also remember seeing people hanging out the windows of the church when we interrupted their morning service. He took that car the the local drag strip many times. I was the pit crew. After opening the headers and putting slicks on , it ran consistent mid 12 sec passes.

Agreed 100 % the 70 Torino Cobra is the one car i wanna own before it's too late. What a wonderful cruiser it'll make, Got plenty room for 4 or 5 people, and that 429 CJ or SCJ under the hood Will Make plenty of power to pull you and all your friends around.

Nice! My brother owned a ‘70 1/2 Falcon Ranchero, 429 SCJ in ‘72/‘73. I was 5. I recall the unique Tach. I recall my head goin back-n-forth, lol.
I recall looking out my bedroom window seeing my father waiting-with a bat-for my brother to pull in the driveway, (my brother had the cable activated exhaust cut-outs and closed them too late as he could be heard coming up through valley over the hill).
No lie, I found out years later my father had the car taken, (stolen at a wedding) soon after this out of fear my brother would end up dead.
A State Trooper originally ordered the car new, my father purchasing it off of the dealership we did Body Work for soon after it was taken in on Trade.
It was Red, black hood w/shaker with the lazer stripe. Black steel wheels with the Dog Caps which to me made the car. Dad had the tailgate lettered with our Company name and phone number, lol, which “may have” been a factor in our father ‘breakin the law’.
I heard my brother discovered parts of this car a year later, (‘74) while attending a Family Reunion at our cousins, seeing his Shaker Scoop on the garage wall and the 429/4speed covered up behind the garage.
Such a different era. Dad knowing, (serving in Korea and drinking buddies with the local Chief of Police, tolerating ‘certain’ behaviors out of love for his son, not wanting to take a hit on losing money or pride I assume).
The color on this car is unique. My father loved ‘67 Galaxies, having one that came originally in “Yellow/Gold”, painting the others the same hue thereafter, (pulling the 428, installing a 351M in the one that became my first car). Lol, I’ll consider myself fortunate regardless….

As a ten year old kid in 78 my old elderly neighbors, who always took our wiffle balls & stray frisbees, had a son who had a green one with Slots. I always liked the way the decals & emblems were "subtly" mounted below the beltline on this car and many other makes. Therefore, I stuck a Cobra emblem about 3/4 in. beneath the trim on my rare 93. Reef Blue Metallic coupe Mustang. It's a nod to these cars. I get a little grief here & there but it's mine and I could care less.

my first new car was a 1970 torino cobra. i ordered it dec 1969 and picked it up from rice and holman ford jan29,1970 it was a 429 super cobra jet, with a super drag pack. with a 4 speed and 14 inch wheels. came with dog dish hub caps, since i coulded afford the magnum 500 wheels. the color was vermillion orange paint, and yes it was very fast for its time. i have the same color, on a 2015 mustang gt that i ordered nov 2014, and got it in jan 2015 a 10 week wait, but its called competition orange. the older guy was mostly right about the car, but there were a few flaws.

I love the 70-71 Ford Torino Cobra and 70 Mercury Cyclone Spoiler body style. Two of the meanest and most aggressive looking muscle cars of that era in my opinion and I'm a Mopar guy. Awesome car. Probably my favorite Ford ever other than a 67 R-Code 427 Fairlane or maybe a 63 1/2 R-Code 427 Galaxie. Ford should've built a BOSS 429 Torino/Cyclone instead of putting that engine in a Mustang because they already had the Mustang GT, Mach 1, BOSS 302, and Shelby GT350 and GT500. They really didn't need another Mustang performance package and the Torino and Cyclone were the cars they actually raced in NASCAR at that time

I owned that car model in 1973, exception is- mine was RED/BLACK interior. This is what I do know about that solid lifter motor, you better be a good mechanic or have a reliable shop. You can't drive it at open interstate highway speeds, like 70, (you'll be taching 3300 rpm) in Texas where speed limits are 75 to 90 mph. It's basically set up (mine was)for light to light racing in the boroughs . I was having NAPA do valve adjustments once a month, and on a road trip from Up state New York to Southeast Missouri, It stuck a valve. The valve broke off and chewed up the combustion chamber, knocked a hole in the piston.A new "bare" head in '74 was $678 and change. Plus a new rod and piston.. Heck, I realized I couldn't afford a new head, so The Ford Dealership where I went to get tbe parts gave me the name of a guy, and address for a macbine shop to do a rebuild of the head. Me and a brother did the removal and replacement of parts. I drove it back to New York and Traded it straight across for a '68 Torino GT. 351automatic.
MCM; YOUR TORINO COBRA SCJ is a georgeous machine and there's somebody out there that will cherish owning it and driving it. Just need some cheaters if racing it.

Nice video! Keep up the good work. Just an FYI, both a special beefed up version of the three-speed Cruise-O-Matic with a high stall converter and four-speed manual transmissions were offered with the Drag Pack SCJ Torinos. The 4 speed manual was standard while the Cruise-O-Matic was a $39 option. With the manual they mounted the rear shocks in opposing direction to reduce wheel hop. The Auto was preferred by those that lower ETs mattered as it crossed the line about a half a second quicker than the manual when rear ratios were the same, even with a perfect launch with the manual. Did some one say Gran Torino???

  • @ejdprice
    @ejdprice ปีที่แล้ว

They did produce a few SCJ Cobras with Automatics that year. Ford put out false literature claiming it was designed by the wind. The big league circle track racers hated how poorly aerodynamic they were and some went back to the 1969 Torinos in 1971 race year. If you ever see pictures of that era, they installed two metal strips on the rear glass/plastic just to keep from being sucked out backwards. .......... I have three Cobras and about 10 more Torino GT's for "My" parts.

Wrong only the Boss 429 was limited to the 4 speed you could get a c6 auto behind these.

Wrong heads. Drag Pack often confused with BOSS 429. Completely different motors. Not a SCJ, just a CJ.

I don't think this a drag pac . It has no smog and I did not see the engine oil cooler. SCJ did come with a auto trans and a rev limiter that would not let the motor go over 6130 RPMs 7500 no way with stock cam . I own a 70 SCJ four speed and a 429 CJ automatic car bought new by me. I also have a BOSS 429 . I have restored all these cars and know them inside and out. Nice car wrong description.

    Ford the great pretender.slow boat.

    • @mikeburks9641

just enough it actually was a pretty heavy car, it was designed for NASCAR but Ford had started to take factory sponsorship away so these didn't see NASCAR action like the 68 and 69 models and I believe Ford won more NASCAR races then anyone during the sixties- early seventies. Ford and Chysler were pretty close and Chevy wasn't anywhere to be seen so I would hardly call that the great pretender.

I love shifting too, and it irritates me that you cannot even get a manually shifted Ferrari or Lamborghini now. However, automatics can be fun, especially in Mopars. Both my 68 Charger and my 71 Super Bee with a 440 are automatics and with so much torque, are fun regardless. You know you have your power online and your transmission set right when you chirp the tires between shifts at WOT.
