In September of 1973, I found a 1970 Torino 351 GT at a car dealer. I traded my 1972 Vega Stationwagon GT in on it. 7 days later I met my wife. I loved that car, my favorite for all times. I look at them often and can't believe the price they are getting these days (why I can't own one). I do have several 1/18 models of them. As close as I can get to owning one now! I sold mine because in 1975, I got orders for Germany and my older brother told me that the Torino would be too big over there. To this day I could shoot him! LOL The last 6 months we were over there I bought a full sized 1973 Plymouth stationwagon and drove it all over Europe. The Torino would have done just fine!
My late grandma had a fairlane the year it shared the torino body. Very strange car. It had the small V8 and automagic, but manual steering and brakes. There were rubber mats rather than carpet. Too bad there are no stripped-down models sold today. I would be fine with manual windows, and I don't need the lights to come on when I unlock the vehicle.

After 1971 Ford shipped the design down under, where they mirrored sheet metal in the dashboard area to right hand drive. They ditched the Torino body panels and replaced them with their own design and it became the Ford Falcon XB, XC and XD. No big blocks were offered but the 351 Cleveland 2V and 4V were offered with a FMX auto and the Top Loader 4-speed manual transmission. Four wheel disc brakes were an option as well. This platform lasted until the mid 1980's. So, yeah it was under rated.
I HAD a 70 mustang fastback!!!! 302 and a neighbor friend had a 70 TORINO GT, VERMILLION RED, 429 4SPEED!!!! Was cool just to cruise town and hear the big block !!!!! Awesome HOT ROD!!!
The '70 Torino was a great car, but certainly not the only one. The field was led by Mopar, with the Roadrunner, Coronet Super Bee, and Hemi Charger, and Challenger. There was also Fords own Mustang Mach 1, and the Chevy Chevelle SS396.
The Ultra-Rare Super Cobra Jets were luckily snapped up and cared for before the rust got them..but the poor small block cars were used up and with no corrosion protection practically all of them were gone by the time I was driving in the late 70s (MN rust capitol of the world).
Such an underrated muscle car and big enough to be a luxury cruiser. I absolutely love these cars I love them WAY more than the Gran Torinos that came after that were more luxury styled. Seriously though this is like a lost American classic muscle car because everybody only wants to talk about Shelby cars when it comes to Ford muscle.
I owned one when I was 16. Had to fix her up but she had the 429 engine and was a beast. Paid $200.00 for her in 1984. And with my own money. Fixed her up myself and loved her until the day she was stolen. I'll never forget that car.
personally i think they are better looking than the mustang because they were not as plentiful and under rated for the most part regardless of engine options.
I bought a Red 1970 Torino Cobra with less than 60,000 miles without its engine when I was in HS around 1980 for $150. I finally got it to together after I was out of the army in 1988.... after purchasing the remains of the original blown up 429 CJ for more than I paid for the car! Used a 1973 460 short block with 72 PI heads, then the original CJ cam, intake, Rochester carb, exhaust manifolds and aluminum valve covers. Cool car with out PS but did have a ribbon tach, 4 speed, and a rainbow 🌈 bench seat interior. I was lucky to find the last of NOS rainbow 🌈 fabric even. Unfortunately the interior and paint wasn’t completed when my brother took it out to connersville Indiana for a bit of time, had to move for his job and he sold it..... terrible to loose a.muscle car....
Had a friend that had a 1970 ford torino with a 6 cyl we dropped a 351 from a mach 1 in it super fast ! i was in high school 1970-72 and street raced mopars at the time. the 1970 Torino 429 SCJ was a nice looking car and it was "reasonably" fast on the street. however, there were several cars that would beat it in a 1/4 mile on a regular basis including: the 454 LS-6 Chevelle, the 440 six pack Road Runner and Cuda, the 455 Stage IV GTO, any 427 Corvette; the L78 375 hp 396 Camaro, a "well-tuned" 340 Barracuda or Dart, the 375 hp 396 Chevy Nova, and the 428 Mustang Mach 1. i had a friend that bought a very pretty 70 Torino 429 SCJ 4 speed and i used to beat him every weekend with my 68 340 4 speed Formula S Barracuda. like i said, the Torino was a nice looking and "decent" running car - but it got beat A LOT on the street.

@@billyfoster3223 well, it depends upon what small block is up against what big block - but "generally" speaking, a small block will beat a big block on the street because it will wind up faster and will hook up the tires better. a big block will only wind to around 5500 safely and the large amount of low end torque will cause wheel spin off the line. so a 340 mopar would almost always beat a 396 chevy or a 390, 428 Ford or a 389 Pontiact. however, the 302 chevy Z/28 would usually get beat by a lot of cars as would the 302 and 351 Ford. the fastest "small blocks" on the street were the 340 mopars and 327/365 hp chevys and the 350/330 LT-1 chevys. the fastest "big blocks" from the factory were the 440/426 hemi mopar; the 375 hp chevy 396; the 435 chevy 427; and the 455 Stage IV Pontiac. the big block Buicks and Oldsmobile's were fast if "race prepared" but no so much stock on the street.

Well, Dodge still has a few "Last Call" Hemi 4-door Chargers on the lots if anybody wants to buy one. I'd get the 392 Scat Pack if I could afford one. I'd get a Dark Horse Mustang to go with it! And a 69 CJ Mach 1 would be great, and a 429 SCJ Torino Cobra. 🐍

Yeah right, seriously doubt that huge Charger with the 383 would take down a 429 scj in the 1/4 Mile. It was probably a 351 powered Torino, not the Almighty Super Cobra Jet. Mopar Don't Go Far !!!

429 was not a great Street engine. The 428 Cobra jet was. The Boss 429 shotgun Hemi Ford however was a pretty good NASCAR engine. The engine was made for top speed, unfortunately after 1970 Ford killed all racing development and the engine died. But the 428 Cobra jet lives in many Mustangs and Torinos. And this beautiful Torino being shown here is a perfect example of how Ford built something better looking than Chevy with the Chevelle.
Thanks for watching Randy and your input. That's what this channel is all about. We're definitely not the professionals. It's our viewers like you man.
The 385 engine family (429 and 460) was far ahead of the old FE design and had more power, but the engines were also heavier and the cars had to grow for those engines and got heavier too. Not a win/win Situation, but those Ford's pretty much still hold their own The Boss was truly a horrible street and strip engine

I have never been in a Torino of this vintage, everyone says they are comfortable cars. I have zero desire to own one, I just can’t get enthusiastic about the looks. I think they are ugly!!!
Then why in the Hell would you be watching this video, and then also take the time to write this stupid comment ??? If you don't have nothing good to say about something, just keep your mouth shut about it, cause no one really cares anyways.
SOFA KING many things wrong in this video. Torino became it's own name in 1968, not in 70 as the video claims. Many of the pictures are of 71 Torino Cobras and not 1970's. The 'shaped by the wind' ploy ended badly as the cars were LESS aerodynamic than the 69's. Using badly computer generated pictures and incorrect information makes this a high schooler's 'C' grade video. Do better!
Sorry but none of the 65 - 72 Fords with that front suspension and steering could be a perfect car at all. Those things were horrible. It takes quite a bit of modifying to make it work well.

Very beautiful car
The '70 Torino was a great car, but certainly not the only one. The field was led by Mopar, with the Roadrunner, Coronet Super Bee, and Hemi Charger, and Challenger. There was also Fords own Mustang Mach 1, and the Chevy Chevelle SS396.
The Ultra-Rare Super Cobra Jets were luckily snapped up and cared for before the rust got them..but the poor small block cars were used up and with no corrosion protection practically all of them were gone by the time I was driving in the late 70s (MN rust capitol of the world).
1970 is the best, sleek, clean, athletic and lightweight.
Oh no!!!! Thanks for watching James. Make sure and subscribe.
That sucks. Thieves. Suck and should suffer the in pits of hades for their actions.
I'd looooove to see a Review of the Mercury to this time, talkin' bout the Cyclone and Montego Series!
Car and Driver tested a 70 with the 429 SCJ. It was potent and they got about the same times as MT but they complained about the 4000 lb plus weight.
Rust buckets. I had one 302 3 speed on the column. Couldn't kill that 302
Thanks for the info Rebel! Thanks for watching and we hope you subscribed to our channel.
You guys should do a video about ford galaxies! Never seen any videos leading up to the 68 year model or above so think that would be cool
personally i think they are better looking than the mustang because they were not as plentiful and under rated for the most part regardless of engine options.
More room for passengers also.
Most of these fell victim to rust, like many other contemporary cars. But they were just as cool as the Big MOPARS. 😎
How sick is that FORMAL roofline Cobra at 0:40?

Didn't know they made a Cobra with formal roofline in 70', I know they did in 68',69', but not 70'.
Had a friend that had a 1970 ford torino with a 6 cyl we dropped a 351 from a mach 1 in it super fast ! It was chocolate brown with mickey thompson m50s on back with air shocks g50s on front with polished aluminum mags on it all the way around . Magnetic cb antenae on the trunk. Looked like a giant RC toy !
I don't think Ford offer a 6 cylinder in the Torino, especially that year the vehicle was just too large for 6 cylinder.
@@Sandhill1988 yes it actually came from the factory with that 6cyl. i was in high school 1970-72 and street raced mopars at the time. the 1970 Torino 429 SCJ was a nice looking car and it was "reasonably" fast on the street. however, there were several cars that would beat it in a 1/4 mile on a regular basis including: the 454 LS-6 Chevelle, the 440 six pack Road Runner and Cuda, the 455 Stage IV GTO, any 427 Corvette; the L78 375 hp 396 Camaro, a "well-tuned" 340 Barracuda or Dart, the 375 hp 396 Chevy Nova, and the 428 Mustang Mach 1. i had a friend that bought a very pretty 70 Torino 429 SCJ 4 speed and i used to beat him every weekend with my 68 340 4 speed Formula S Barracuda. like i said, the Torino was a nice looking and "decent" running car - but it got beat A LOT on the street.

Oh, ok, a small block V8 beats a big block V8?!

He said it correctly, as it approaches the SS Chevelle from behind ! Thats where it would stay too !

The FE was arguably a better performance engine than the Lima. Which makes the 1969 version, the better car.
It didnt look like a Mustang, Mopar or a Camaro. But it had a "universal" look and shape for a muscle car. Could put big engines in them.

a scj drag pac is rotting away about 2 miles from me even as we speak ..
Not a win/win Situation, but those Ford's pretty much still hold their own
The Boss was truly a horrible street and strip engine
Randy Coursey, last 428 in a Torino was 1969. Last 428 in a Mustang was 1970. 429 was not a good street engine? You delusional much?
I think a better way to describe it would be a tightly coiled pile!

"Ugly"... To each his own. And you'd be on the vast minority.
Do better!
Did U ever consideratet the Maserati, Ferrari, Lamborghini..ansoon..???
