    I wouldn't mind seeing a space marine W&G campaign.

I agree with Josh and Luka, I love the super punishing grity grindy experience of Dark Heresy. If things come to combat and it catches you by surprise then somthing has gone horribly wrong, that or you have a pyker on your team. Also damage reduction vs just not being hit is a big pro for me, someone in full battle plate shouldn't be harder to hit than that naked dude, but he should be able to get it and not turn into red paste. The percentile system for rolling die is also pretty intuitve atleast for me with straight modifiers. Also Charts for days, the critical charts are one of my favourite things in Dark Heresy, watching your friend fucking explode into red mist should have a serious effect on you, unless you have seen all that before which that system accounts for. It also promotes an extremely tactical approach to combat, seek cover or die

If they think D&D initiative is clunky I want to see what they think of Shadowrun

I think with the revised books now some points you mentioned were adressed, like more freedom in the character creation.

My group started as a one-shot with 5 players, then kept it going for a few more sessions with 4... a few years later there's only two of us players. It started as we were all different types of characters in a parade that got stuck together when the parade got attacked. All that's left now is myself, a Tempestus Scion Sniper, and the other player, a Blood Angel (Space Marine). We don't really have much in the way of support, but the Marine tanks and melee's, I give big sniper shots and stealth around. We stick to 2 or 3 session missions, starting in a command ship of a Grand Inquisitor, dropping down wherever we are needed.

it is just a shame Ulisses didn't get a chance to build on it much, Cubicle 7 has the rights now. Supposedly they starting where Ulisses left off but also suppose to make a revised rule book. So who knows when any new content will ever come out for it.

From what I'm hearing the core mechanics of the system isn't going to change. It definitely needs to be amended and reformated to make it easier to understand.

Reading through the core rules. I feel Ulisses dropped the ball on the system. The rulebook feels hodge podged together. But cubicle 7 has already made the supplements for W&G so it wouldn't make sense to change the game and have to rework stuff they already made

I like the fluidity that you can make a "homebrew" classes by just swapping class abilities.

I recently started GMing for a Wrath and Glory group (a friend bought the starter set around the same time I bought the core rule book) and I have to say, I really like it. My favourite part is probably the character creation. I also really like the resource management that comes with the Wrath, Glory, and Ruin systems. As stated in the video, the mob and initiative mechanics make combat go so much smoother compared to DnD. Finally, I've always loved using tons of dice and this game does not disappoint in that department (some of my players have rolled 14d6 for ranged attacks). If I have a problem with the game, it is probably the ridiculous amounts of typos and contradictions within the rule book. I'm also not entirely sold on the odd Tier system. I understand why it exists, but it just feels strange. If there was a way to naturally shift Tiers without having to spend lots of valuable BP, then I think it would be better. Of course, I, as the GM, could just use it as a second leveling system alongside Rank. I'll figure something out.
In reference to the point the video made about interaction attacks not being particularly useful, I interpret them to be the thing that non-combat characters can do to still be useful in combat against tough foes. The reduction of defense by a point or two can potentially allow the other characters to shift another die or so for damage, helping them pierce tough resilience. While my players have not used them extensively yet, I think that they probably will learn to get more creative with them as they get more comfortable with the system. Stuff like suppressive fire also seems like something that friendly and/or enemy mobs should be trying to do from time to time.
As for the video's point to class limitations for Orks and Eldar, I agree that they feel a tad constrictive at the moment. One thing that really gets me is that there are specific references to Mek Boyz and Weird Boyz throughout the book but there are no classes for them yet. Even so, I also think it is tough to really complain too much considering there are already tons and tons of classes in the game and that it would be fairly easy for a GM to just tweak existing classes or outright make new ones. Same goes for different species.
While I cannot speak to the quality of the Dark Tides adventure book (which is quite reasonably priced at the moment, might I add), I must say that I find the Escape from the Rok adventure that came with the starter set to be of rather low quality. I've been working on doctoring it up a bit to make things a tad more interesting and my players have been enjoying it so far, but if you have some past experience with RPGs, you probably don't really need the starter set.

Great thoughts! It'll definitely depend on what you and your group likes. I think the system has a lot of potential if properly supported by Ulisses.

Yeah, I really look forward to seeing what they do with it. This is a great start to what looks to be a very promising system, and I just hope they don't abandon it.

I dont agree on a few points. Now I have a bias for DH2 over W&G, but Ive tried giving W&G a chance multiple times and still give it chances to surprise me in my current group.
To the point, I don't think lots of d6s is superior or easier than rolling a single d100. In my experience people still don't remember all their dice regular and bonus, need to be explained the wrath dice repeatedly, and have to sort their icons and exalted icons from the failures and still decide on if they will shift or not. Its slower. DH could get overwhelmingly complicated if you had a lot of special rules to keep track of, but I ran a campaign for more than a year and the majority of modifiers we had to keep track of were aiming, distance, and upgrades. We rarely ever got bogged down by size, or sprinting, or darkness, or even fear. If you add these elements to the game (and you should but in moderation) of course the complexity is going to rise, but thats the same for W&G too. I don't think people realize that WG has all the modifiers I lists above too. Its a hyperbole to say that DH was overly complicated. It had depth and that meant it COULD become complicated if you let it, but it didn't have to.
WG strength is that it is a flexible system. But the drawback to the flexibility is how they got it so flexible, lack of depth. Everything is paper thin and one size fits all. FFG's line didn't just give you two kinds of inquisition characters it gave you a specific theme to follow and gives you a ton of options to make yourself a unique part of the world narratively and mechanically and as you progress you unlock more options through talents or increase your odds with attribute or skills.
Back to WG, defense is useless and that irritates me. Getting WS or BS high enough to beat even a high defense isn't hard. In my experience defense isn't for dodging its for mitigating 1 or two points of damage by preventing the attacksr from shifting icons. For me that isnt good enough. It neuters interaction attacks because even no combat characters can hit and have their damage be determined by the quality of the gun they are using, but it also just makes combat predictable by looking at the one sides weapons and comparing it to the other sides resilience.
I don't like this game, but I am still giving it a chance. Next sunday I GM a Space Marine adventure. At T4 all the PCs are effectively identical but Ill see if the players can surprise me for a change.

Yup! There was an interview in March's White Dwarf with the authors and they mention that a main focus during development was being able to just use minis as your PC.

  • @misomiso8228

Yeah, DnD is not good at doing those big ‘Horde' Combat encounters. A good way to deal with them is do what you sometimes do in yogvir and tor and create ‘minion’ enemies which only have 1hp per hd, as that can give you a much more epic feeling of a battle.
Also combining Defence and Armour into AC in DnD has always been controversial as it breaks immersion, however it does speed up combat. One of the best other systmes that solves this is actually Warmachine's Armour and Defence, but it tends to break down at the extremes.
It’s probably not going to happen as 5e is better for MWG to play from a business perspective, but you could try an OSR system like ‘Lamentations of the Flame Princess’, as those systems are very quick and focus a lot on RPGing and exploring.
Or you could look at some of their iconic adventures like ‘The Gardens of Ynn’ or ‘Red and pleasant land’. Think you guys would enjoy them a lot.

    • @mikfhan
      @mikfhan 4 ปีที่แล้ว

Never liked AC either - what might help a bit is narrating HOW the damage is avoided each time, like ordering the AC as follows:
Natural, armor, deflection, shield, dodge - so if the attack only fails by the final dodge bonus, it is dodged, otherwise it is shielded, deflected, stopped, absorbed, etc.
Eventually players get a sense of "okay this guy has massive armor but is very slow" and narrating that enemy's AC can be omitted for faster play.
I assume that was the original intent in D&D but feel this kind of narration in combat is often skipped over, for faster combat, better or worse.

I GM'd a campaign for more than a year and it isn't as they described it. DH is lethal to be sure, but the point is to play smarter. If you use cover and and work as a team you can overcome even the most dangerous threats. If there is any issue is that DH its that you cannot sleep away damage which makes a dedicated medic almost required in a group, but the game is not like they are describing it.

How does it compare to ffg star wars rpg?

  • @pmac2217

I need to understand better the way negatives are taken care of. It seems to be oh something bad happens but there’s now gauge for how bad or for that matter how good. Star Wars narrative dice system from FFG is so good at this.
