I always wondered if the DH praying to the Emperor is a mockery from the demon, a trap for unwitting rescuers rushing to aid the “survivor” or the desperate (and probably futile) struggle of the host to overpower their, ahem, inner demon.

It seems like Daemonhost progresses through the possession as theyre awoken. Initially on the floor and pleasing to themselves, saying the voices aren't real, before being more fully broken as it levitates in its half woken state.

Well, you can hear Groaners yell stuff like "HELP ME! KILL ME! KILL MEEEE! PLEASE..." right before they start running at you, they still have their souls and memories, but their bodies are no longer under their control, it could be the same for Deamonhosts, retaining their soul and being but having to share it with a deamon, which is of course way more powerful than they are, and all they can do is try to pray to the Emperor while the deamon sleeps
