I know this is going to sound stupid, but I think AC/DC is just one of those things you either get or you don't. It's very difficult to explain why they kick ass and make great stadium anthems, while the Black Eyed Peas' stadium anthems suck
it’s actually not complicated it appeals to the lowest common denominator. I like them but it’s like saying you need to “get” fast food to like it, it’s purposely designed to be liked by the lizard brain. Like there’s certian fast food people just don’t like and some people consider eating fast food at all beneath them. Some people would consider those people anti-fun and others only ever eat fast food, it’s kinda like that. I think it’s like if people around him kept saying pizza hut was gourmet I think the disappointment in actually eating it might make someone hate the food if that were the case.
My brother in Christ, the "stadium anthems" stuff applies for both groups. AC/DC is not horrendous, just like Black Eyed Peas. They are good, at making people feel good. There's not really anything to "get" though. Like Adum said, all their beats are the same, nothing about production is innovative, the choruses / hooks are predictable. It's designed to appeal to the masses. Take Chappell Roan for example. I enjoy some of her music. Her single "Good Luck Babe" has almost the same kick/snare beat as all the AC/DC songs (it actually has more variation than AC/DC which is a bit embarrassing for them), there is nothing experimental about the production, and the lyrics are purposefully vague or somewhat vapid so as to leave room for as many people to connect with it as possible. It is factory produced music designed for mass consumption.

This is Adum obsessing about technicals to the exclusion of all the other elements that go into why people enjoy things. I think it’s kind of insane to say that people like AC/DC just because they like the genre and era. People tend to be more discerning than THAT. Yes, it’s the same beat and structure, but it’s done well, polished, performed at high intensity, and has fun lyrics that make you feel cool and that you can sing along to. It’s populist entertainment rather than anything innovative, sure, but it doesn’t pretend to be more than what it is. Just let people like things without calling them dumb or cucked to the genre or something lol.
@@hubblebublumbubwub5215 I mostly agree with Adum in the sense that AC/DC is heavily overrated. I think much of their legacy is propped up by boomer / younger Gen X nostalgia. I'm the biggest prog rock nerd in the world, Neil Peart was my idol as a drummer, but I'll be the first person to tell you that complication doesn't always equal good and repetition doesn't always equal bad. Go back to 50s rock 'n' roll or the blues before that, how many of those songs sound exactly the same? Rock is, at its core, a very simple genre. Adding things onto it and making it more complex is certainly something you can do, and that generally is where my preferences lie, but that can go too far to where the musicians' heads are so far up their asses that they end up alienating people. That's what ultimately led to punk rock being made, another genre where, at least early on, you could say all the songs sounded the same (something tells me Adam here isn't a big Ramones guy, heh). That was the point, though. So much of rock became "how many things can we add to a song to make it good?" whereas other musicians believed in more minimalist ideas, where the philosophy was "how much can I take away from this song and have it still be good?" There's nothing inherently wrong with either philosophy, it ultimately just depends on where your preferences lie. AC/DC was essentially "what if Chuck Berry or Elvis had (then) modern high pitched vocals and shredding guitar?" Also, my immediate answer to the question of "give me an AC/DC song without this beat" was "The Jack," for what that's worth. Standard 12-bar blues shuffle. But 12 bar blues is bad because it's repetitive, I guess 🤷♂
The concept of AC/DC’s music style is not something im going to hate on, but their discography of samey songs which have so much filler each album is definitely something bad about them. Theres like two perspectives in this argument, people that listen to their hit songs, and people who have listened to their albums (and not just their big ones)
@@kaydenjones3183 I definitely wouldn't say every one of their albums were great, but more than a few I would say are fairly consistent in quality, not much in the way of filler. Agree to disagree, I guess.
I don’t think anyone’s ever praised ac/dc for their variety. I feel like most of their fans would admit that they are very one-note, and I don’t think any of them would use the word “creative” or even “musicians” frankly lol. They’re just fun party rock tbh
AC/DC is like pop rock and roll. They're a little generic and samey, but a good time to listen to when it comes on at some event. Wouldn't listen to them in my own time, but don't mind when they popup somewhere
...does anyone actually place AC/DC along with Pink Floyd? When he says they shouldn't be mentioned in the same conversations as Pink Floyd, my immediate reaction was "No shit, who would ever say such a thing?" And I say this as someone who enjoys AC/DC. They're clearly not in the same level, but that doesn't mean they're bad. At least they're not Kiss.
Ngl, not completely wrong, all their songs sound pretty much the same... but it's an awesome sound so who cares. No one ever gets on Scorsese for basically making the same movie over and over again.
Just because a lot of their songs are relatively "basic" and repetitive doesn't necessarily make them bad. A lot of it is the presentation and the general performances. (Both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson have great stage presences) Sure, you can be a snob about it and only listen to "deep" or "complex" songs, but sometimes you just want fun and simple.
Its not even snobby imo. When you listen to AC/DC albums you get fed up very quickly because their songs follow the same structure. But of course if you’re listening to their hit singles and then saying “people who say AC/DC are repetitive are snobby” then its not even the same conversation
@@KainGerc if we’re gonna get into subjectivity then there’s no point in this conversation. I can just reply “well saying music isnt bad because its basic is entirely subjective”
@@kaydenjones3183 Adum's takes are way bolder than just "they bore me after a few songs". He argues that AC/DC is bad and that the fans refuse to admit it. He also calls the style of drumming "uncreative", then shows an example of an okay drum solo as if that's peak creativity. By the late 70s people were sick and tired of drum solos, so much so that it spawned a whole genre (punk rock).
Songs that get played at parties get played again at parties because people associate them with parties. I think that's whybthe Black Eyed Peas song in question is still played.
Adam occasionally has completely braindead takes like this, but rarely is he so determined to attract the anger of the entire internet just for the fun of it. Thunderstruck is a near-perfect song, and Adam is a contrarian just for the sake of it. 🙄🙄🙄
To be fair their drummer has literally said hes barely a drummer and isnt great. The lyrics are not amazing either but the other instruments are good and it's fun. Not technically incredible or anything but sooooo fun
I'm so glad someone came out and said it... "Adum discovers rock" yeah, Adum discovers the most basic, least intricate rock there is, it's. It's not just the drums, everything about ACDC is so repetitive, doesn't make them bad per se but makes them very boring and overplayed for anyone not seeking specifically that. Definitely shouldn't be in any top 10 or whatever lists for any reason other than sales. Also the majority of Pink Floyd drum tracks are roughly the same as eachother too tho....
Cmooon, as much as i want to agree to something like this it is like definitionally. Are a lot of their songs similarly structured, yeah duh, similarly themed yep and similarly preformed. But it isn't like set in stone, it has personality in some of it's sound as more kicked up versions of older rock music and that's something that probably will never make me too critical of them (and that my dad has gone to the moon and back to make me listen to them thru my life lol). I'm a guy who can like some of the more formulaic pop stuff and largely go for what's intresting in terms of rock music like prefering diversity and change in sound over arena thumpers (like Floyd, Crimson, Zappa etc), but not realizing that kind of music isn't subject to cliches is baffling to me, especially when Rush is the example! Rush is like the definition of well-composed snoozefests, and some of the more standard songs of them still going the same route.
I think its weird to compare AC/DC to Pink Floyd and Rush because they're "classic rock", even though thats a radio term and not a real genre of music, and these bands are going for very different styles. It's more accurate to say that AC/DC is hard rock while Pink Floyd and Rush are prog. Personally i think it makes more sense to compare AC/DC to bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
It's not surprising that Adam, being the kind of musician he is, wouldn't like AC/DC. There are many things I could write here, but it all boils down to: If you don't like AC/DC, listen to Powerage and if you've still got the same opinion, that's fine. There are no logical arguments to be had here. You vibe with it or you don't. It's fine.
1:39 Adum's comparing a hard rock band to two prog groups, kinda apples to oranges I mean he's not wrong, more that they'd be closer to The Who or Led Zeppelin or something. Is a fair point regardless
Say what you will about AC/DC but you cant deny that their easy to play tunes and i mean on the instruments is a gateway for musicians to start and i think a inspiration that you can succeed without having to have to be a "genre breaker, genre definer, or new". IDK its nice that 4 people that are just OK can do great.
AC/DC is extremely formulaic and is nowhere near as talented as a band like Pink Floyd, but I don’t necessarily think it’s bad if a band has a consistent sound
Yup music has always been like that but I'd argue it has gotten worse considering record labels are no longer interested in the quality of artists as they are the quantity of meme TikTok hits they can sign and mill out to exploit to keep the show going for another day. I use Apple Music and when I hit the "New" tab it's a new flood of "literally who's" every day. I never hear anyone talk about these people, I give their music a chance and sometimes I'll find something but most of the time it's absolute garbage.
Just saw that comment there asking "is Metallica bad"? I know Metallica gets a lot of shit because of Lars Ulrich drumming and Kirk Hammet's abuse of the wah pedal. The thing that sets them apart though is that James Hetfield is a genuine talented songwriter. A band like AC/DC would never be able to write something as nuanced as Nothing Else Matters or as complex as Master of Puppets.
ACDC was never classic rock. They were heavy metal. If you want classic rock then the Rolling Stones is a more appropriate band. As for the beat that is their signature beat and for fans it is the start of a good time. Also but how many bands use bagpipes. Not many. You need to remember their music was transforminal in the 70s and it is bloody good to listen to now.
rush isn't exactly the same genre, it's closer to progressive rock. progressive here doesn't mean just original btw but also procedural and very technical.

At least AC/DC fully understand that the music they make is silly
AC/DC was essentially "what if Chuck Berry or Elvis had (then) modern high pitched vocals and shredding guitar?"
Also, my immediate answer to the question of "give me an AC/DC song without this beat" was "The Jack," for what that's worth.
I seriously doubt most people even noticed the "monday tuesday.." verse. It's just a catchy song, because of the first few seconds of it only.
I wonder how he feels about the White Stripes
I don’t think anyone’s ever praised ac/dc for their variety. I feel like most of their fans would admit that they are very one-note, and I don’t think any of them would use the word “creative” or even “musicians” frankly lol. They’re just fun party rock tbh
AC/DC is the bud light of classic rock.
You’re not excited that it’s at a party but it’s not offensive.
Lol thinking acdc and rush are in the same genre.
AC/DC is like pop rock and roll. They're a little generic and samey, but a good time to listen to when it comes on at some event. Wouldn't listen to them in my own time, but don't mind when they popup somewhere
I would argue that if you want to hear that same style of rock but played really badly, just listen to Status Quo
Theyre very generic and samey
Rock n roll = pop
It's the prog bands that are out of the ordinary.
It's still good music. I love Rush and AC/DC, seen em both live dozens of times.
Adum is a "Nile" man.
...does anyone actually place AC/DC along with Pink Floyd? When he says they shouldn't be mentioned in the same conversations as Pink Floyd, my immediate reaction was "No shit, who would ever say such a thing?" And I say this as someone who enjoys AC/DC. They're clearly not in the same level, but that doesn't mean they're bad. At least they're not Kiss.
It wasn’t until you showed the “I gotta feeling” music video that I suddenly remembered just how much hatred you have towards will.i.am 😂
3:17 Rabbot from Aqua Teen Hunger Force
Ngl, not completely wrong, all their songs sound pretty much the same... but it's an awesome sound so who cares. No one ever gets on Scorsese for basically making the same movie over and over again.
Just because a lot of their songs are relatively "basic" and repetitive doesn't necessarily make them bad.
A lot of it is the presentation and the general performances. (Both Bon Scott and Brian Johnson have great stage presences)
Sure, you can be a snob about it and only listen to "deep" or "complex" songs, but sometimes you just want fun and simple.
Its not even snobby imo. When you listen to AC/DC albums you get fed up very quickly because their songs follow the same structure. But of course if you’re listening to their hit singles and then saying “people who say AC/DC are repetitive are snobby” then its not even the same conversation
@kaydenjones3183 I'm not saying that they're not repetitive.
I'm saying that calling them bad because they are repetitive is entirely subjective.
Most lukewarm take ever, this is like saying “Y’know pro wrestling is fake?”
Songs that get played at parties get played again at parties because people associate them with parties.
I think that's whybthe Black Eyed Peas song in question is still played.
it's only rock and roll, but i like it
AC/DC, Pink Floyd and Rush are in completely different genres. What are you even talking about.
Well, commercials and movies just play the same Acdc songs over and over again.
I wonder if he has the same opinion on a band like the Ramones
Adam occasionally has completely braindead takes like this, but rarely is he so determined to attract the anger of the entire internet just for the fun of it. Thunderstruck is a near-perfect song, and Adam is a contrarian just for the sake of it. 🙄🙄🙄
What about big balls, their best song
0:48 insert JoJo joke
Also the majority of Pink Floyd drum tracks are roughly the same as eachother too tho....
>has never heard the ramones or any punk song
@@hubblebublumbubwub5215 also them actually
Rush is like the definition of well-composed snoozefests, and some of the more standard songs of them still going the same route.
there is more to a song than a drum beat
I think its weird to compare AC/DC to Pink Floyd and Rush because they're "classic rock", even though thats a radio term and not a real genre of music, and these bands are going for very different styles. It's more accurate to say that AC/DC is hard rock while Pink Floyd and Rush are prog. Personally i think it makes more sense to compare AC/DC to bands like Led Zeppelin and Deep Purple.
ACDC sucks he says in front of an Australian
Ive never been in such alignment with a youtuber's take
It's not surprising that Adam, being the kind of musician he is, wouldn't like AC/DC. There are many things I could write here, but it all boils down to: If you don't like AC/DC, listen to Powerage and if you've still got the same opinion, that's fine. There are no logical arguments to be had here. You vibe with it or you don't. It's fine.
1:39 Adum's comparing a hard rock band to two prog groups, kinda apples to oranges
I mean he's not wrong, more that they'd be closer to The Who or Led Zeppelin or something. Is a fair point regardless
it's also the same bass line every song
Say what you will about AC/DC but you cant deny that their easy to play tunes and i mean on the instruments is a gateway for musicians to start and i think a inspiration that you can succeed without having to have to be a "genre breaker, genre definer, or new". IDK its nice that 4 people that are just OK can do great.
AC/DC is extremely formulaic and is nowhere near as talented as a band like Pink Floyd, but I don’t necessarily think it’s bad if a band has a consistent sound
In a world where Judas Priest and Iron Maiden exist, ACDC are indeed terrible
This is exactly my problem with AC/DC
I've been thinking this for so long and say this to everyone. Ty Adam
I’m sorry that you hate fun, Adum
same druns = bad band
...somehow
Finally. I'm glad someone's saying it.
To say that the songs are uncreative is bull IMO, even if they have repetitive rhythm.
I've got big balls is a fantastic song
Just saw that comment there asking "is Metallica bad"?
I know Metallica gets a lot of shit because of Lars Ulrich drumming and Kirk Hammet's abuse of the wah pedal. The thing that sets them apart though is that James Hetfield is a genuine talented songwriter. A band like AC/DC would never be able to write something as nuanced as Nothing Else Matters or as complex as Master of Puppets.
The bagpipes song from them is like maybe 3 minutes, but it feels like 12 minutes. Good lord is it an annoying track.
Bad take as per usual
I'm 100% with adum on this one.
Lol I totally agree! 100% I felt like I was going crazy
Thank you Adam.
"drums are too simple" is Gotta be one of the dumbest reasons to hate a band ever
Everyone hates ac/dc because of the drums. but they are a good entry for learning rock music in college
