    VERY IMPORTANT: Put tray in middle of cooler to suspend ice. If air goes underneath ice instead of skimming top of ice it will make it even colder

    I would recommend putting a grate inside the bottom at least 1" from the cooler floor, then add a divider wall in the middle so that when the air flow goes in it hits the bottom and works its way around the divider and goes up past your ice to the exhaust. For a method of cooling add 16-20 oz bottles of water with rock salt in them. Salted water stays frozen longer, 3 bottles on each side of divider and have them spaced apart to allow air to flow through freely. You can rotate 6 bottles in it, 6 bottles in freezer so that you always have cool air to keep house cool. When one set unfreezes switch em out. For clarification, rock salt not table salt, table salt.

    I have made this a very one. My cooler is slightly smaller and I used a flexible tube that goes on a dryer. I also found a small fan that works off a USB port. so I have a battery pack that I can charge in the Sun or plug it up and this fan plugs into the battery pack. I've got a couple of gallon jugs in my freezer at all times and it works great! I like my bedroom cooler at nite because I get night sweats so this is a great alternatives to a small air conditioner. I had a small air conditioner but it made my room feel too moist and I didn't like it. this is perfect, I have it in a cooler that has wheels very easy to move. What a great idea. when I plug mine in and put the ice in it last most of the night.

I've made whole coolers out of it. A cold beer is nice to have after a hard day on the roof.

    My husband made something very similar when he drove across country back in 1982, in an 74 Capri that had no AC. We met on that trip, so I got to feel first hand how well it cooled the car. I was in Phoenix, AZ. and it was about 95* outside and VERY a cool 72* - 74* in the car. He tells me that he went through 15 lbs. of ice each day, as he took the southern route from Los Angeles, CA. to Kingston, N.Y. and it was miserably hot throughout the south. He used salt to sprinkle on the ice when the outside temps got really hot. Something to do will helping the ice give off colder air or something. Oh well, whoda thunk it..!!

    • @davexb6595
      @davexb6595 7 ปีที่แล้ว +13

      Salt Water has a lower freezing point. Hence salt ice is colder and thus takes a little longer to melt.
      If I did this, I would full it with salt ice every time.

    • @phugwad
      @phugwad 7 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Dave XB Salt water ice does not take longer to melt because it does not take more energy to melt. Adding salt to water will lower the freezing point, which will cause it to absorb more energy from a certain temperature air, which will cause it to melt faster. The air coming out of the ice chest will be cooler but the ice will melt faster.

I used it at the cricket, brought my little solar panel, filled it with ICE and BEER and had a nice cool air blowing on me the whole time whilst the rest of the crowd were choking on the heat. Then open the esky pull out a beer and enjoy a cold one with AC. FUCK YEAH!

      @LarryElterman 7 ปีที่แล้ว +24

      Adding salt to the ice chest will make the ice melt faster, not slower. This actually will make the air coming out colder but at the expense of making the ice last less long. Adding salt to the ice (salt ice cube) will allow the ice to absorb more heat, but a smaller amount of ice with salt, or a larger amount of ice with no salt. Same cost. Think in terms of physics. The salt will basically allow you to have a smaller cooler. To use less ice for a given amount of cooling. But it will not save money.

    I love that you brought an old idea, that works, to a new generation. This was common back in the 1930s and early 40s, minus the solar power. My parents told me about their homemade "Air Conditioners" when i was a kid...they called them "Swamp Coolers"

    • @ItsAdventureTime1
      @ItsAdventureTime1 8 ปีที่แล้ว +16

      +Luke Lionheart This is not a swamp cooler. A swamp cooler only works in dry environments with low humidity. Swamp coolers run dry air over cooler water to lower the temp. If you live some place where the humidity is 60% + then running the air over water only makes it hotter. He is running the air over a block of ice, so the ice will actually condense some of the humidity back into water which means this setup will work in either a humid or non humid environment. I only comment because I live in South Florida and I hate the heat!!! I have probably researched every method possible to keep cool in the summer. South Florida summers are like northern winters... We board everything up and try not to go outside if possible.

    For slower melting ice, minimize the amount of surface area of ice. For example a bunch of ice cube that maybe equal the same 3D volume of his block of ice would theoretically melt faster due to more surface area exposed to higher temperatures. In other words, use one solid block of ice to last longer as he seems to have. Yet you need enough surface area of the air of the fan to blow across the surface area of the ICE before exiting the PVC exhaust port.

    If you put the ice bottles on a grate to get them a few inches off the bottom of the cooler, it might force more air around the bottles, increasing the heat exchange and pumping out colder air. You would have to change out the bottles more frequently though (same reason).

    in 100litres of ice there is capacity for water to hold 9kwh of energy. The phase change from 0 deg water to 0 deg Ice is a huge amount of energy. Consider this when designing. If you have access to free ice, this is a big bonus. A friend works in a hotel and can have 20litres chilled down during a shift. If salt is added, the stored energy is even more as the freezing temp is lower. Great video and well presented.

    This may be a little off topic but JUST in case this happens to you. A little back ground first. When I was in the military and doing hot weather trainer in the Mohave desert we slept in tents and no way to cool down though we did have large fans blowing HOT air at us. So with me laying on my cot, I thought to my self, I wondered...what if. So I got a bath towel and got it soaking wet then laid it over me. With the fan blowing air over my body and the wet towel in place it cooler me down right away and I actually got a little chilly. It was about 115 degrees inside that tent. NOTE: My son's A/C went out at his apartment one time, in Phoenix, and he remembered this story. He texted me and told me how cool he got doing that.

    • @desertsun02
      @desertsun02  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      hi. i've done that before. it works great when the humidity is below 50 or 60%. another trick is to use a 'chill its' evap cooling towel. start by putting a small desk fan next to the bed blowing on you. then take the cooling towel, wet it down and lay it over you. the air from the fan hits the towel and evap cooling takes place. you can get super cool doing that. often i will get so cold that i have to place a sheet or light blanket between me and the towel because the towel gets so cold it's ridiculous. the good thing about using a chill'its evap cooling towel is that you and the blanket stay totally dry. the water stays in the towel and will not get you or the blanket wet at all. the towel can stay wet 3 or 4 hours at a time. i just wish they made full body cooling towels.

    I actually was inspired by this video using the ice that I am developing a similar unit that uses a chest cooler.. but with the unit I have built.. I used a 3.99 Styrofoam Cooler and a 6 volt case fan from an old pc... with using some internal ducting to have the input air travel to the bottom of the cooler (I cut a laundry soap bottle in half and pinned it to the side of the cooler and put a hole in the side at the top :) ) and then using two 2 Liter Bottles (from soda) filled with a salt water frozen mix (ionic solids lower the freezing point of water by 2 degrees C per mole added [ mole = sum of atomic weights in the compound and is measured in grams] ) and with just that rig... with a 1.4 cubic foot box over the fan with a thermometer in it (cooking LOL) I dropped the temp in that 1.4 cubic feet in less than 5 minutes by 20 degrees... and i think I can get it more efficient .. I will post pictures of the set up later on today :)

      Kat Hutcherson Sweetheart. The tinsel is to see if it is on or not, blowing at full. Even big HVAC systems do this.

    I will try this with a styrofoam cooler....easier to cut...probably won't hold up as well...but worth a shot. Good video!

    A suggestion, instead of a 90 degree tube use a 45 degree where you can cool off the higher warmer air better.

      Actually I think you guys are using different reference axes here...
      By your 45 I assume it's 45 degrees from pointing vertically, which would actually be 135 degrees from the base.
      In that case, 180 would be pointing straight up.

      THATS WHAT İ THOUGHT .YOU MUST LET THE AIR CIRCULATE MORE IN THE COLD CHAMBER AND THEN GET OUT .ALSO INSTEAD OF WASTING WATER EVERY TIME YOU USE ICE ..WHY NOT USE SMALL BOTTLES OF WATER AND FREEZE THEM AND USE THEM CONTİNİOUSLY WITHOUT REFILLING THEM WITH WATER .

    if the exhaust vent went over the fan intake would that slow the melting process and be more efficient?

    To add to this, if you have spare place in your freezer it wastes electricity, where as putting water into freeze and changing it to keep cool saves freezer electricity... at least that's my theory ;) Great AC!

    inexpensive coolers can be cooler by spraying spray foam in to the areas you cut the holes in to also by drilling some more holes and filling them as well.

    Try adding salt... it will lower the temperature even more. :P

      seems like my dad told me he stored ice blocks under the porch all summer surrounded by sawdust to keep it from melting like 50 yrs ago...so, the salt idea, combined with the milk jug idea to keep the water from leaving, and the sawdust packing...does that sound viable? i like the foam cooler idea! i get those shipped once a month for scripts plus easier to cut!

      Salt is used to melt snow so the block of ice will smelt sooner .

    • @Blight-fp3vt
      @Blight-fp3vt 10 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      ***** You add the salt to the water before you freeze it. Allowing it to freeze at a point colder than 0, and therefore giving more cooling effect. It wont necessarily melt faster once it's frozen with salt.
